Reading my own fanfiction is basically just a rollercoaster of emotional whiplash.
20% of the time: “Hold on. I wrote this? This is fire. This is emotionally devastating in the best way. This scene is dripping with tension. I’m a literary perfectionist. Someone give me a book deal.”
80% of the time: “Straight to jail. Immediate prison. Why is everyone’s breath hitching?. I used the word ‘gaze’ three times in one paragraph like I was possessed. Did I think 'his eyes darkened' was profound? Why is everyone clenching their jaws? Why is someone whispering 'their name like a prayer' again?? No one talks like this. What is this dialogue. Why are there so many weird metaphors and em-dashes…”
sometimes writing isn’t about talent. sometimes it’s about sitting in your chair and suffering for 45 minutes until a single sentence crawls out of your skull
What they don't tell you about writing is that as you write, you discover scenes and entire plots that you hadn't accounted for that need to be written. So you can spend two hours writing and editing only to realise you're further away from the finish line than you thought you were when you started
I've been considering the power tier level of SWTOR's force sensitive classes before and also thought the Consular might be the strongest but now I'm curious: how would you rank the four classes in terms of connection/power in the Force?
Hmm, it’s been a while since I’ve thought about it and some of my opinions have changed a little, but I maintain that the Jedi Consular is by far the strongest.
Shielding each person takes enough strength away from them that they stagger afterwards, so clearly it’s a LOT, yet they’re able to keep fighting and functioning like normal. I know it’s just game mechanics, no one would want to play a consular if they had to do most of the first chapter with increasingly heavy debuffs nerfing their power, but I like to take that and run with it. So yes, each shielding ritual exhausts them and they get more and more tired as the chapter goes on, but they’re able to compensate as their connection to the Force grows to more or less match it. Having to function in a constant state of pain and exhaustion likely forces them to sink further into the Force just to use it, so when you’re finally released from the ritual, that intense level of focus and connection remains. If their connection was strong while they were struggling under the demands of the ritual, think how strong they are without the exhaustion and pain distracting them.
They also have the most obvious shows of strength in the game, like lifting a steel girder the size of a city bus and tearing though 3-4 foot thick blast doors.
The next strongest would be the Sith Inquisitor, although my ideas on them have changed a lot as my understanding of how the Force works has also changed. Honestly it probably works in a similar way to the Consular. Each additional ghost puts their mind and body under immense stress, yet they still manage to fight perfectly well, so their connection to the Force is deepening to compensate. I do think they were more powerful when they had all the ghosts, but once they leave they’re still no slouch. Still, there are much fewer ghosts than there are shielded Jedi, so I still think the Inquisitor is weaker.
Next would be the Sith Warrior, maybe. I honestly think of the Warrior and Knight as swordsmen/swordswomen first and foremost, so I haven’t considered how they would rank. If I remember right, the Warrior is held up on Korriban as a prodigy, and Baras uses them time and again as his bruiser enforcer. I think I recall more examples of them using the Force, and you could also argue that becoming the Emperor’s Wrath might come with a power boost. So I’ll say they’re stronger than the Knight when it comes to brute strength in the Force.
The last would be the Jedi Knight. They’re shown time and again as being immensely skilled with a lightsaber, I think it’s even mentioned at the beginning of the prologue right after you land on Tython. However you don’t see as many examples of them using the Force for big things, and nothing happens in the story that might increase their strength. If anything, I think more of their Force use goes into their swordsmanship, like making themselves faster and hit harder.
If we’re talking swordsmanship, it would be Knight, then Inquisitor (Assassin), then Warrior, then Consular (Shadow).
And since I’m having fun here are the other classes from strongest to weakest
I'm kinda amazed that I'm actually done with this huge, multi-generational project but here it is! This is a tablecloth with a printed cross-stitch template on it that my grandma started stitching some time in the 80s. For whatever reason, she stopped and never picked it up again.
This was quite literally how I found it in January of 2024, with the hoop still in place and a threaded needle and everything.
I've worked on this thing on and off ever since then because it felt good to be able to connect with her even though she's been gone a long time now. I got my mom to agree to work on it as well, and decided that we should all have different colors so we can see who did what. The dark red cross-stitch was my grandma, the yellow was my mom, and the orange was me.
I finished the base cross-stitch a while ago but the designs were a little hard to see in the yellow and orange, so I went back and outlined everything with back-stitch using the same dark red floss that my grandma used but left her portion alone.
It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
something to remember is that writing is hard. and I don't necessarily mean in terms of writers block or trying to solve plot holes etc (although that's part of it), but as in it's hard work. even when writing is going well, you're spending a lot of mental energy on it – on deciding which words to use and in what order, remembering how to spell those words, figuring out if character dialogue sounds good, remembering the things that happened around the bit you're currently writing + what you want to happen next, checking plot notes, remembering your established canon, holding different subplots in your head.... that's like having a whole bunch of programs running simultaneously on a computer, and even the best computer with high end specs can't run like that forever. so if you ever catch yourself thinking "man all I did was write/revise/edit. why am I so tired?" that is your answer. because your brain has been running multiple processes and it needs a break
There's an awful trend in reading that's this CinemaSins kind of rejection of abstract concepts and suspension of disbelief, that makes people say it's bad writing when authors use descriptions that aren't immediately one to one with physical reality.
Like it's bad when a "tattoo is undulating" (as opposed to... "drawn in a wave like pattern on the skin"?), or when hair is "wet wheat from a late Summer field" (as opposed to "sort of brownish light yellow that dries lighter, but is not actual wheat stalks growing on someone's head but kind of reminiscent of the color and texture"?), or when when ice cream tastes like midnight at the fair" (as opposed to "ice cream flavour bringing back memories of undefined ice cream flavours that are individually popular but always tied to a memory of late evening at the fair ground and probably smelling vaguely like popcorn and sugar"?).
Please. We have to get back to understanding abstract descriptions that evoke feelings and memories and mental images or things we haven't experienced yet. This hyper utilitarian way of reading and judging text is killing fiction. it's robbing you of experiencing things you haven't actually personally experienced.
"collect a skull from the altar of bones"? sometimes being a Sith is so predictable. what are they gonna ask me to do next, soak it in a pool of blood?

we do not charge money for the copyrighted gay wizard stories.
Remember people, this is against AO3s terms of service. If you see a fic that does this REPORT THAT THING!!! These people may not know better or they might, but them doing this has the potential to ruin things for everyone.
