TL;DR – Twitter thread by a library worker on a news article about a woman who pulled hundreds of books out of a library dumpster and donated them to an underserved school. THOSE BOOKS WERE THROWN OUT FOR A REASON. Like outdated science, racism, and misogyny. #ContextMatters
Sorry, book burning is ALWAYS bad.
Listen, even if the books are legit crap and promote the most horrible things in the world, I am against burning them. The kids should be able to read these books - with the understanding that these books are flawed and have racism/misogyny within them. And maybe it’s a good opportunity to teach them how to recognize propaganda and misinformation? Or to see how outdated science can evolve?
But book burning is the wrong move. Always will be. Don’t go down this road, it will end up backfiring.
… books being discarded by a library is not equivalent to being burned or banned. To even be considered for removal, books will either be in very bad physical shape or will be ones no one has checked out in several years, or will be replaced by newer editions of the same biok. Copies of these books still exist in archives with the express purpose of being preserved, and can be gotten by the library through inter library loan if someone wants to read them.
Weeding and discard of books are very thorough processes, and as the thread says books in good condition that would be useful elsewhere are donated, or sometimes sold to fundraise for the library. Many libraries will also have a cart of free books for people to take if they want.
If, after all this work, and evaluation, and opportunities for reuse, a book is placed in a dumpster, it’s because it isnt needed or useful anywhere else.
Again, this is not the same thing as banning books or burning them. If that were the case we’d be talking about stuff like trumps autobiographies, not outdated books from the 70s that haven’t been circulating.
y’all saying Black Lives Matter for one situation just don’t sit right with me, it goes beyond police brutality!!!
it’s Black women dying at a higher rate during childbirth. it’s Black people being exposed to COVID-19 at a higher rate. it's about Black people like Henrietta Lacks being taken advantage of in thee medical field, but are still being denied healthcare. it's Black people being denied job opportunities due to the name on their applications. it's Black people being denied into higher institutions despite having the same qualifications as their non-Black counterparts. it's Black people having their creations and ideas stolen without being given credit simply because a good percentage of society still believes in 2021, mind you, that Black people are not creative enough or smart enough or skilled enough. it's the decrease of federal funding for schools in predominantly Black neighborhoods due to gerrymandering and redlining. it's Black people being denied housing due to laws in NUMEROUS STATES that inform realtors to refrain from selling black people those homes. it's the kidnapping and murders of Black people that don't make it on the news. it's Black trans women having a life expectancy of 23 YEARS OLD. it's Black people, especially Black trans people, being incarcerated at disproportionately high rates. it's Black people with criminal records who can't find jobs to turn their lives around because they're stuck in one spot after being released from the incarceration system. it's every single Black life that has been lost to racially motivated killings, whether it be the police or by citizens. It's about being the foundation for electing a new President of the United States.
It's about knowing that even though there is still a lot of work to do as a nation, electing someone who values the lives of people over the lives of bank accounts is a step in the right direction.
Black Lives Matter is not just about protesting against police brutality. this is deeper than that.
All Black Lives Matter. Not just the ones you specifically are a fan of. Not just in death, but in life as well.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
24/7, 365. Not just during February.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
i think villains in general provide better, more epic romances because they're allowed to go to extremes. they're allowed to put their love over the greater good. they're allowed to be selfish. the best a hero can offer you is number two, because their duty comes first. villains, though. villains will burn down the world for a last kiss goodbye.
Yea, sure. Until YOU or people you love are among the victims for someone else’s love and the villains won’t care. Would also like to point out that some villians(Kuvira, for example) have been willing to sacrifice/throw away love interests for their own goals.
idk about you but existing in the real world gives me and my loved ones immunity from the actions of fictional villains. hope you manage to get your family out of star wars.

HOLY SHIT IM SCREAMING
IM LIKE CYRING THIS IS SO GOOD
At any given moment, I am thinking about Green Day and Pansy Division
For the record, Pansy Division is a VERY openly gay punk band. Green Day chose Pansy Division to accompany them on their first major label tour..... in the 90s.
Green Day also wore Pansy Division merch!
AND, they actually hung out with Pansy Division!!
+ Billie Joe Armstrong is openly bisexual. Green Day has been out here supporting the queers for 3 decades.
For the record, this was in 1994, when Green Day first blew up as a band after releasing their album Dookie, which was a hit. When I Come Around? Dookie. Basket Case? Dookie. Welcome To Paradise? Dookie. It was their first album to really blow up.
And on their big break, Green Day chose a QUEERCORE band to open for them on their first major tour?!!! During the 90S?!!! I wasn't alive for the 90s but I can't even imagine how game changing that must've been.
Here's what Billie Joe Armstrong had to say about Pansy Division in an interview:
(Read it, trust me)
How, with that name, did people not realize they were gay? I've heard "pansy" used as a homophobic slur more times than as a type of flower.
ya'll are forgetting the most amazing green day song from 1997's nimrod.
king for a day is literally about breaking the gender norms.
"Sugar and spice and everything nice wasn't made for only girls."
this is a trans agenda i can get behind
Just mentioning that Mike and Tre have also come out as bi! Green Day has done more than just support queers, they ARE queer.
story time: when my brother was born I was about three years old and I can’t remember much, I just remember wanting to pick his name and finally settling on “Rainbow” and telling my parents hey so I decided we should name the kid Rainbow, top name right
bear in mind i was three and had all the naming capacity of a young fan making their first forays into making a power fantasy self-insert oc
but apparently dreams can get you somehwere because years later, when i was about thirteen i mentioned this memory to my mother, and she said “yeah, we called him that” and I was like “lmao as if you called him that I know brother’s name duh” and in short she got out his birth certificate, and yeah. My brother’s fucking middle name is, officially and legally, Rainbeau.
ok but it gets better. because my brother’s first name is Morgan, a welsh name which by some translations means “arc over the sea,” which can be argued means “rainbow”
my parents called my brother Rainbow Rainbow
i had too much power when i was three
You went 10 years not knowing your own brother’s fucking middle name?
I remember reading a study once that asked people in their 90s to rank the best to worst decades of their life, and the overwhelming majority were like “my 70s were the best” and ranked their teens and twenties as near the worst, and I think about that a lot when people act like if they’re not living their best life at 25 they’ve lost their chance. like nah, the longer you’ve had to learn about yourself, the more you can love yourself. there’s no expiration date on joy until you’re dead

oh yeah have i ever told yall of the academic war i have been an unwilling soilder in for the past two years
okay SO. i have two professors that both teach this one subject, but different classes. they have different last names, so i didnt know this at first and espically since they are academic RIVELS at my school, but they are MARRIED. but for the past 8 years they have been in an academic WAR of geospatical sciences data. more accurately, the raster vs vector data debate. i am personally on the side of "both have their pros and cons and can be utalizied to the utmost efficency" but both professors are like, DEADLOCKED in insistanting one is better then the other
so, professor A is my mentor. i like him a lot, and he was the main person that taught me the most abotu Eris and ArcGIS. professor B is a professor i had one for class, and shes nice and knows a lot of little tricks about Eris programming but mostly relies on arcMAP because shes the raster data professor.
and THESE MOTHERFUCKERS. have written no less then 30 papers that is basically like a "re: re: re: re: re: re: vector data is better then raster fuck you" but like, Professionally. and they leave stupid notes in the footnotes that read "Reguardless of Professor A's opinions reguarding the efficency of Vector data, Raster data has a more efficant polygon computing rate and is the most commonly used program on interplantaring mapping" and its HILARIOUS
ive read all of their papers, and its basically like reading an email chain between a married couple arguing over the colors of the kitchen backsplash for their new home. its HILARIOUS. but obviously, because of their differnet last names and because they act like they HATE each other, NOT VERY MANY PEOPLE REALIZES THEYRE MARRIED
until like LAST WEEK
professor B publishes a paper that casually drops the word "husband"
and obviously all the students are like "oh i didnt know u were married!" because we read that shit like how white suburban mothers read People Magazine
and shes like "yeah, its Professor A"
and we all FLIPPED. THE FUCK. OUT
we thought the framed picture of the two of them on professor A's desk was ironic because hes that type of guy
like, you gotta undestand. these two have gotten into YELLING matches in hallways. these two refuse to go onto trips with each other. but apparently they have a system where they quite LITERALLY leave all of their work at work and drive home in seperate cars and literally NEVER mention work at home. it is SO funny
Metrosexual is objectively the funniest thing to come out of homophobia
Country girls continue to make do ✨
A post I've been thinking about but yall need to realize men are just people. Gender and biological essentialism is still bad even when you apply it to men. Men aren't inherently evil or bad. Men are taught toxic masculinity and to be misogynistic (just as white people are taught to be racist) but they aren't inherently this way. This isn't meant to absolve them either. Men need to take responsibility for unlearning the toxic messages they have been taught. But like, honestly men are just people. They aren't inherently bad people.
