i know this is an f1 blog, but can i ask what you thought of the stranger things finale? i saw a lot of people online were disappointed, and i’ve stopped watching the show for a while now, so i don’t really have any strong feelings about it. was there a certain way you would’ve preferred things to end? (also hoping you have a warmer and lovelier 2026!!!)
i was disappointed with the second half of the final season as well, mostly because it made me realize i had been watching a different show than i thought it was all along. it was significantly less interesting in terms of both plot lore and character development. i have so many questions about the mindflayer and vecna's plan that were entirely unanswered, probably because they're going to answer them in a spin-off that i simply will not be watching, and it's infuriating.
my favorite characters in the show are will, mike, and eleven/jane, and all three of them were treated so badly with endings that were all so deeply unsatisfying. i knew that jane would either die or fake her death and leave, that was clearly telegraphed, but the way they did it was shit. i hated the way mike was centered in jane's final moments, in such a cringe conversation that didn't make sense and didn't land emotionally. kali should not have died the way she did, it was egregious, and they should've been able to heal together.
mike turned out to be either a significantly more shallow character or a more tragic one than i expected. it seems the reason that he turned into a terrible friend to will had nothing to do with why he was a terrible boyfriend to jane, he was just emotionally unavailable, not struggling with internalized homophobia. there was no reason for him to fail to say he loves her back in the finale. he pushed everyone away because of his fixation on this imaginary dream girl, and seeing him turn into his dad physically broke my heart.
will... my beloved will. what they did to him... i'm still processing it. the writing was so cruel and reductive, even after the duffers said the story was about him and he was a main character. they gave him a beautiful moment of self-acceptance that gave him powers, and then did basically nothing with him after that. they didn't show the vision that scared him into coming out, and the finale showed no reason why he needed to do that. he wasn't attacked mentally or possessed or anything like that, just helped out a bit.
realizing that they wrote a slow-burn, long-build-up rejection arc for him was devastating. other characters have had feelings for people who don't want them back, and it was resolved in a single season. the fact that they decided to stretch will's out for five seasons, and then not reward him for that with love, to dismiss it as a crush and fail to address things like the gifted painting, making him leave hawkins at the end to find somewhere else where he can be loved instead of being loved by the person he wants, where he is, was gutting.
i just don't understand why they couldn't have wrapped up his crush on mike earlier, if that's all it was, and given him an actual love interest for the last season. every other lead had a requited love story, but not the one character who is defined by who they love. he gets nothing, just a flash of an imaginary future and a very real rejection. he deserved better with mike, and he deserved to matter more to the final fight. they had foreshadowed so many cool things about maybe him being possessed again but nah, nothing.
if i could've chosen the ending, vecna would've been killed and will become the primary host of the mindflayer. he would've had to be saved from giving into evil by his love for mike, who would've broken down and confessed that he loved him too, showing that mike had unknown depths, and paying off the incredible slow-burn that they'd built for them. jane would've escaped, but not in a way that reduced her to a magical figment of mike's imagination, but given her a real life, with her sister, free from all the forces that abused her.
ugh i just... the way it was, it wasn't scary or creepy, it wasn't mysterious or interesting, it just was big flashy cgi without any unpredictable twists or shocking reveals. there were some good moments scattered through it, like it wasn't all entirely awful, but the things that mattered most to me... came to nothing. i wish i didn't care as much about the show and i hope i can move on soon from it, because it's just... it sucked for me man haha
As someone whos favorite character is Mike wheeler and I saw myself so deeply in him - thank you to the duffer brother for confirming my worst fears about myself. Not being able to say I love you to el only confirms he was more platonic with her to begin with. He simply believed that being friends with a girl must mean love because being gay wasn’t even an option.
All of that to become just like his father. To be useless to those around him. To never leave his home town.
Dude needs to listen to Smalltown boy a few more times and meet Will in the city.
