I‘ve been thinking a lot about how Jesper‘s arc felt so much less satisfying and people‘s very valid criticism of it. I haven‘t figured it all out, but one thing that makes him stand out from the others Crow‘s backgrounds is that his struggles come completely from within. While all of the other Crows have been Done Wrong TM by some external force - imprisoned, enslaved, robbed, hunted, abused - Jespers „downfall“ to the Barrel comes from his internal struggles: his addiction und impulsivity.

While he may not be at fault for what he is dealing with, he also has noone else to blame - no Pekka Rollins, no Jan van Eck, no Tante Helene, no Brum, no Nina. The only wrongdoing he has encountered - being made ashamed and afraid of his powers by his father - was done from a place of genuine care for his well-being, no matter what you might think of his decision.

And I think all of that makes Jesper's character arc much harder to resolve. All the other Crows win by outdoing their enemy (or forgiving them in case of Matthias). Jesper has noone to outdo. There is no enemy to best. There is just ... himself. So his story would need to have an entirely different focus.

I love what every different Orpheus brings to songs like Epic II.

Just heard Joshua Colley's EPIC II and he sounds AMAZING. So different and I LOVE his choices. The strength, the moments of falsetto to the emotion in it. UGH it's good. I can't wait to hear his If It's True, because it's another one of the songs that all of them do so differently. I've only seen one Orpheus (Jack) and obviously have listened to Reeve for YEARS so it's so fun to discover the different choices. I can't WAIT to hear Jeffrey!! He was a worker when I saw him and I've heard his Orpheus is amazing!!

When I turned 17, we ordered a cake at the grocery store for my party, as we’d done many times before. If you wanted something written on the cake you’d write it into a section of the order form. We requested, very simply, “Happy Birthday Courtney”. When we went to pick it up the day of the party, this is what we got.

The bakery employees had absolutely no explanation for this. The order form, attached to the box, very clearly did not contain any of those extra names. Whomever had done the writing was no longer in, so there was no one to ask how this had happened. The fact that the name ‘Juan’ is misspelled bewilders me to this day. (I’ve never seen ‘Miley’ without the E, either, but it’s believable that someone might spell it that way.) Did this cake slip in from an alternate universe where I’m one quarter of a set of Hispanic quadruplets? Dyslexic Hispanic quadruplets, maybe?

This cake became the focal point of my party. At least two of my friends regularly called me ‘Courtney Mily Jaun Pablo’ for years to come. My siblings and I still reference it sometimes, eleven years later. It is probably the funniest thing ever to occur at any birthday celebration of my life, and may well remain so for the rest of my days.

I love a botched cake.

Somewhere in crooked kingdom, Wylan mentions that his father used to bring him mallow tea and honey comb when he was sick with a lung infection. later, he says his mother got sick and died, of a lung infection.

its my own heartbreaking headcannon that they were sick at the same time, and Jan took advantage of wylan's disorientation to get rid of his mother. maybe he woke up one day, finally feeling better, only to be told that he had survived, but his mother hadnt.

On top of that, lung infections can cause lasting effects, and maybe he was left with some chronic effects, constantly leaving him scared of dying like his mother did. I can only imagine how terrified he would have been working in the tannery, breathing fumes that exacerbated the symptoms, remembering how his mother had died.

edit: wylan also mentions being scared of catching lung fever after nearly dying in the canal. breathing and drowning come up again and again in his story

quick reminder that wylan wheezes a lot. when he was running to the ferolind in the first book, jesper can hear him wheezing. when kaz and wylan break into van eck's office in the second book, wylan is out of breath from running and needs a rope ladder. at first, I thought it was a silly 'oh wylan's just a little out of shape' thing, but realistically, the lung fever, the time in the tannery, and the nearly growing probably had it's major effects on him

matthias helvar’s character arc is actually so fucking beautiful because he actively chooses to change his viewpoint of the world. he instinctually thinks something bad, and then stops and reminds himself to give it a second thought. he sees in hindsight how his old life was poisoning him. he wants to help others who had been in his position, even if they can’t see the poison on their own yet.

In Shadow and Bone season 2 ep 6 when they fight the Sankta Neyar and she is manipulating the metal in all of their blood, Wylan is the only one still standing up. Everyone else is in the floor and trying not to scream. Wylan is standing and cradling one of his wrists while it shakes and is only giving shakey breathes but not crying out in pain.

What I got from this is:

That boy is anemic as fuck

Neyar viewed him as less if a threat

There is metal in his hand which is why his pain was centred around it, likely because of the abuse

He has his book accurate insane pain tolerance (the auction scene and the torture is mental and the fact that he did that willingly and made it worse for himself to be "convincing" is batshit)

book one wylan is so fun because we never know his inner thoughts and he’s kinda unhinged. swings wildly between “kaz don’t kill that guy” and “we could wake them.” sings once. looks shocked when the bombs he made work. flirts. truly unreadable from an outside perspective.

and then you get book two wylan and you realize that every decision he’s made is entirely spur-of-the-moment and panicked and he exists in a constant state of fear and it’s like oh. yeah that makes sense
