I feel like because Wylan was so sheltered growing up, he wouldn't realize beating your kid (verbally and/or physically) as punishment wasn't normal. Jan Van Dick would have probably told him that he was just weak for not being able to take it like every other kid. And Wylan would only find out once Jesper or somebody explained that no, parents who love their kids don't abuse them. Yes I will be writing this into a fic eventually

I recently rediscovered this poem I wrote for a project last year, and I thought why not post it?

I sit on a rooftop And watch life flow around me I wonder how many stories unfold while no one’s watching Isn’t it strange how while you are asleep the world is still very much awake?

I listen as a car’s growl slices through the silence I watch the moon glow with a light that is not its own I’m tired. But I won’t sleep.

Not when somewhere, someone is awake just like me So I sit and look to the stars for answers To questions one can not begin to speak They shimmer and blink but do not respond

Somewhere, an owl is just beginning to start their day Somewhere, someone is working a night shift just to make ends meet  Somewhere, someone is typing a message they’ll never send Somewhere, an artist is bursting with inspiration that only comes from long nights alone.

Alone. What a strange word.

It can mean many things. It can mean the hours spent in only your own company It can mean months spent without so much as a call It can mean sitting in an empty library, devouring words others shared

It can mean staring at your phone and hoping it lights up It can mean freedom, as you watch your heart bleed onto paper It can mean floating through nowhere as people pass by It can be a thousand of these things, all knitted into one fraction of a moment

Or it can be something else entirely.

But you are never truly alone Not when a million different stories are being woven around you Not when a million different people are thinking thoughts that echo your own Not when a million different people are walking streets you’ll never see, underneath the same glitter-dusted sky.

There was only one person who would have been able to hurt Wylan—a boy who couldn’t leave his house after dark—this late. And Jesper was going to murder him. He was going to find Jan Van Eck and break a bone for each injury he’d given Wylan before dumping him in the harbor to drown.

Or: Wylan shows up on Jesper’s doorstep late at night, bloodied and bruised in more ways than one.
