hi i’m eunha and i talk about mostly six of crows! i also write and am currently working on a kanej academic rivals to lovers fic called between the bylines 🗞️🐦‍⬛🪻♟️🌌

in general i like musicals, reading, watching sitcoms and romcoms, playing chess, sudoku, baking, and ceramics.

i like to think there was a moment during their first couple of weeks knowing each other when kaz made a crude joke in his office and looked to inej for approval but she was still learning kerch and didn’t get it yet so he took the time to explain it to her and got a little flustered and was all like “it’s funny, right? it’s funny? say it’s funny” and in her head she was like damn yeah i guess this loser isn’t so scary after all and also now i have a stupid crush on him

In later years, younger dregs members sometimes ask how she manages her proximity to Dirtyhands. Isn’t he scary? Doesn’t he have the blood of all his victims staining his hands?

And she has to stand there with a serious face on, and she tells these kids (about the age she was when she started, really) that he’s the monster under their beds at night, that his soul is as dark as the pitch and tar… all the while remembering the boy who would explain his jokes in a language that wasn’t her own just to seek her approval for it. The boy who would lay out what the words were, the specific Kerch connotations that don’t translate well into Suli or Ravkan, just to try to make her laugh

i know we always talk about how inej represents magic to kaz but i just wanna say beyond the fact that she’s the disappearing coin—where as soon as he knew she could sneak up on him he figured out how she did it—the real essence of the magic he sees in her is her optimism.

throughout their entire time knowing each other, kaz couldn’t wrap his head around why someone who was dealt such a horrible hand by the world could still have faith in it and that’s what turns him back into the obsessed kid who stays up all night trying to figure out what makes the trick work (you know, the reason he fell in love with magic in the first place)

the best part? it’s not only not a trick, but kaz in turn becomes the thing that is magicked, just like the coin. the determination to heal and work through his trauma along with the belief that happiness still exists seem to appear out of thin air within him after years of being a pessimistic grouch. and just like how the coin is never actually gone, neither was that part of him!!! he just needed a little help finding it again.

idk i just love how in a world full of grisha who can literally stop a heartbeat or shift tides, inej is the one thing that makes him feel like anything is possible again.

I don't know if "optimistic" is the right word to use when talking about Inej. This whole chapter is her thinking: "I'll leave him behind, there's nothing to be done here, I have to leave, I'm not coming back, this is impossible, etc etc". And then at the end of the story, Kaz surprises her (not me though, I've been inside his head), and she thinks this. Maybe it's mutual.

oh yes great point that’s another thing i love! it’s that even if she isn’t necessarily feeling optimistic internally, it’s that she can create it out of nothing by sticking true to herself and her values, believing the good in her friends, etc. (like i love the moment when kaz asks if her parents would forgive her for the things she’s done and she says something along the lines of “i have to believe they would”)

it means that when she is in a more pessimistic emotional turmoil like the end of crooked kingdom, that optimism she created in others gives her own strength back to her, like kaz finding her parents, holding her hand, and in a darker shore when he assures her that happiness does still exist. he wouldn’t have done that without her magic.

idk if this is making sense? i probably didn’t explain it best the first time, but if “optimism” isn’t the right word maybe it’s something closer to determination, or just sheer willpower to believe in the good!

pirate inej headcanons!!!

incorporates new patterns inspired by sailor’s knots into her braids

perches on the crow’s nest and will sit there for hours on end babbling to herself and watching the sun set over the horizon bc it reminds her of being on the rooftops in ketterdam

learns new languages!!! becomes almost as good as nina at them

curses like a sailor because specht is a bad influence and it helps her gain confidence being the leader of a crew for the first time

uses the same looking glass kaz gave her on the harbor and wears it around her neck

also wears jewelry that combines traditional suli designs with pirate symbolism like anchors and compasses made and sent to her by jesper

befriends so many marine animals!!! and loves to read about them in her spare time. is inspired by the idea of wylan and jesper naming every stray cat after her, so she starts naming different species after her friends and family. like, all sea otters are jesper because they love to play, and all whales are wylan because of their songs

every time she docks somewhere and sees a crow she likes to think it’s matthias paying her a visit and will confide in him about the mental battles she faces regarding faith and happiness

is really close with her crew and relearns how to be loud and carefree with them through things like singing sea shanties, playing card games, having meals together since now it’s no longer her job to make herself invisible

whenever she docks somewhere and has a really good meal (especially sweets), she asks for the recipe to send to nina

has made a running bit out of buying the most ridiculous looking hats at the markets for kaz wherever she travels because she thinks the look on his face will be priceless when she gifts them to him (also knowing full well that jesper will be the one who gets some use out of them)

actually buys kaz decks of cards and picks up newspapers with murder mysteries to solve together (is totally planning an apple cake and murder mystery date night when she gets back)

The first one reminded me that there is a style of braid that’s named after the sailor’s knot. Other than that I can imagine her doing braids styled after the half clove hitch. Or taking small monkeys fist knots (the kind made of thinner cord instead of proper rope) and fixing a couple to the end of her braid

YES i love this!! i was thinking about how hair carries memories, so inej braiding hers differently on the wraith versus in ketterdam would be an interesting way for her to separate those identities.
