God I love early comics, they just go against everything that modern comics are trying to do in the best ways

There’s a lot to unpack here, but I think my favorite detail from each image is: 

- The use of the phrase “(slurp slurp)” within dialogue, with bonus points for it being inserted into the sentence in the most awkward place possible 

- The way Batman is riding on Superman’s shoulders like a little kid being carried around by his dad 

- The fucking phrase “The Bat-Witch Must Die” 

- The dead-eyed expression Lois has as she runs toward Superman. She sees this shit all the time. Forget the scream in the dialogue box, she knows everything is gonna be just fine and she just wants this over with. 

- The fact that a comic about Lois Lane whipping a Supermannequin is the “SHOCK STORY OF THE YEAR !” (space between text and exclamation point theirs) 

- The use of quotes around “weapon” and “General Grant”

Hey, it’s not like Golden Age America has the monopoly on awkward sound effect positioning. You can’t go five seconds in the JoJo fandom without running into this one:

Also, quotes around things for no reason are very much 「A Thing」. Especially when talking about 「STANDS」.

It’s interesting to consider what the role models of the older four kids are maybe most famous for, besides their occupations.

Nikola Tesla: getting owned by his arguably inferior rival Thomas Edison; TAA came out in 2000, so he would have been even more obscure then

Hammurabi: creating one of the first codes of law and displaying it publicly so all citizens could read it

Dorothy Parker: dry and sardonic wit

Lord Byron: being a melodramatic dumpster fire of a human being

Wonder if these choices of role models say anything about the kids? Dorothy Parker is almost funnier to me than Lord Byron… Duncan passed up journalists who have been historically famed for their daring investigations or ground-breaking scoops, in favor of a woman who did have impressive achievements but is most famous for being snarky as hell. (…influence of growing up indoctrinated by VFD parents? valuing a journalist with literary contributions more than a muckraker journalist? or more optimistically, maybe Duncan thinks of Parker more readily because Isadora is also a fan of Parker’s poetry.)

Nero Death Experience (The main villain of the first movie is named Nero.)

Logos / Pranking the Natives (Song plays while the Enterprise becomes the god of some prewarp alien species somewhere.)

Buying the Space Farm (I just don’t understand this title. The song plays while Kirk dies and tries to do the “have been and always shall be your friend” thing.)

Logo and Prosper (Song plays over the opening title in Beyond.)

Yes, Calvin 2 is already taken. We can’t use Calvin 0 either because that would imply the existence of an “original Calvin,” which is impossible - all universes run in parallel, except for splinter timelines.

I think we can all agree that Problem-Sleuth Calvin, as the one with the actual presence in other universes, should be Calvin 1.

From there, the same Alternian informant tells me that there’s a splinter timeline of Calvin 1... ish, that’s pretty important in her area of the multiverse. That Calvin should get the next number, which is Calvin 3.

After that, Calvin 1 to the extent of my knowledge doesn’t have any other splinters, so Braxiatel-Collection!Calvin should probably get Calvin 4.

Finally, the Calvin from the universe that the Susan in my universe hails from. I haven’t actually met this version of Calvin, but I’ve heard hints that they’re a splinter of Calvin 4 so we’ll call them Calvin 5.

Any Calvins discovered after this list’s publication shall get the next available number.
