We got asked if this is cute and okay. I can very happily say yes, this is stupid cute and those are happy porcupine noises. 

One of my favorite things about doing zoo work was all the noises you never realize the animals make when they’re excited or interested in a new thing. Coatimundis squeak and snuffle, and giant porcupines make that sound.

interestingly this tradition (unlike most from the diaspora) seems to bridge the ashkenaz/sephard divide

im pretty sure most sephardic ppl don't do this at least not rn. i mean ive never heard of this in my life. looked into it a bit and apparently it was started by ashkenazim and some other jews picked up the tradition while others didnt.

also fun fact! there's debates on whether it's best to eat the candles on the first night or the last. I think first is best because there's less candles

it depends on the material! classic paraffin, for example, is a product of petroleum, and thus not food-safe, while things like soy wax or bees wax are safe to consume, as are candles made from vegetable or animal wax.

yeah I was really shocked at first too! I've never heard of this either. my family always used the thin, artificially blue, birthday-style candles and those obviously wouldn't be safe to eat!

talked to some people who I thought might do this and they told me that they only use beeswax, soy, and other natural candles like @gay-jewish-bucky said. they said it tastes and feels about how you'd expect. I will not be testing this this is not a tradition I wanna do

I checked with some Israeli friends and apparently they do it too! considering I'm going to stay over at a friend's place I consider an older brother for the holiday and I'm the youngest in the house I may be bullied into doing it.

But they said in their household they make the youngest child eat the candles between two levivot like a sandwich. which idk if that makes it better or worse.

And I want Merlin to accidentally make his mother a diety, or just worshipped in some capacity cos the druids took his “my mum deserves the world” very seriously.

Merlin: The old ways didn’t raise shit. The old ways gave me a spiteful cryptic basement lizard and told me to figure it out. Hunith, my mother, she’s the one you can thank for the Emrys stuff and you better thank her a lot ‘cos I was a handful as a kid.

Lancelot: You’re asking me? You’re apparently magic itself, divinity incarnate, and you’re asking me?!

Then a little while later a letter arrives in Camelot:

Care to explain why I have close to a hundred Druids and magic users lining up at my door to “Thank me as The Great Emrys instructed”? They’re calling me the mother of magic and asking where the best place to leave offerings is. I’ve told them to distribute most things to the village, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with any of these enchantments or magical artefacts.
