ok sorry for the sappy question but i love your blog and i was curious - what was your favorite/most obvious 'will loves hannibal back' moment? or, alternatively, at what point did you realize it wasn't one-sided and just hannibal being in love with will?
One of my favorite moments is very early on, when Will actually takes the initiative and reaches out to Hannibal via gifting him a bottle of wine. Not only does he decline an invitation to dinner in person (he doesn’t call, he doesn’t text, he drives to Hannibal’s house and does it in person, so unlike the rude antisocial man that he is), but he also gives Hannibal a bottle of wine.
Will is trying to be friendly and succeeds.
It’s sweet and reflects the innocence of season one.
Ugh. This is the first time Will is returning the friendship. No longer is it just a one way road, we’ve graduated to a two way street and it is lovely.
As for the realization of Will’s feelings?
For Will it was a much slower build up compared to Hannibal who from just meeting Will was ready to propose marriage and have his babies.
In Fromage, when Will arrives at Hannibal’s office and sees it in ruins with two dead bodies and Hannibal a mess and not at all his pristine self, Will feels guilty for dragging Hannibal into his world. He feels relief that Hannibal survived Tobias. This is when Will starts to think that maybe this strange doctor means more to him than just as a psychiatrist.
The important quote to remember going forward is, “abandonment requires expectation.”
In Savoureux, Will is shaking and terrified when he comes to the realization that Hannibal is a killer. This hits Will so hard because he cares about Hannibal. He thinks of Hannibal as his friend, his paddle, the light that will guide him back when he’s lost. Relates to him and feels a connection and a pull towards him he hasn’t felt before.
And now he’s realized just whose hands he’s put himself in. This heartbreak carries Will into his emotional state for season two. Will expected Hannibal to be his guide, the trustworthy doctor who would help him. From Will’s POV, Hannibal had abandoned him by being someone else, betrayed him.
Betrayal and abandonment cannot be felt so strongly if the person means nothing to you.
And for Will, Hannibal means a great deal to him.
tl;dr Will falls for Hannibal more cautiously, while Hannibal dives head first into their relationship and Will’s pants.
