âWhy do you wanna talk about Gambit right now? Heâs cool and all, butâŚâ Ethan paused, thought about it a moment. âOooh. You mean Heine, not LeBeau. Got it.â He snickered, taking another drink. This would be a lot easier. âWhatâs there to say? I love the girl like sheâs my own flesh and blood. WaitâŚscratch that. You know what I mean.â He laughed again. Wow, he was missinâ all the marks tonight. The more he thought about her, though, the more his smile faded. âShe deserves better than sheâs gotten. I give her a hard time, but sheâs a good kid, and I donât know what Iâd do without her. Any time she gets sad about something, I just wanna fix it. I wanna make the bad things go away, and stick a fist through anything else.â Was that too sappy? Felt too sappy. He hiccuped, taking another swig of beer. âYeah, the little demonâs something special. Maybe justâŚâ he leaned closer to whisper conspiratorially, âdonât tell her Iâm here.â He leaned back again, swaying a little. âI donât want her to worry âbout me. She doesnât need that on her plate too.â @remyhcine

kelsi shook her head, ânot in that phrasing i donât think.â she shrugged, chuckling softly. she didnât think that, or see how other could either. she just did what she did to help other people out and make them feel betterâthatâs what sheâd always done.  âoh, he is? i canât really fight anybody, but do you need me to knock some sense into him?â she questioned, taking a bite of her own cake that sheâd taken out for herself. Â
âWell, they should, you should hear it more often.â There was an attempt at a light punch to her shoulder, a sort of move youâd give a kid doing his best on the baseball fields, but it missed itâs mark. Remy waited no time before she managed to shove a mouthful of cake in her mouth, icing everywhere, including her chin. âI appreciate the offer but--â it was unintelligible through the cake. âI donât reckon youâd do much damage.â With a heavy sigh she rest her chin on her free hand. âWhen was the last time you went on a date?â She asked her, choosing to move the subject to something else quickly.
kentackermanâ:
âFine,â he muttered sharply, dropping all the bags of candy right on the counter on top of the heap of paperwork she had and turned his body towards the few chairs lined up near the door for patrons while theyâd wait. Luckily, they were all empty and they hadnât subjected someone else to the sideshow. âIâll just wait here until youâre ready to talk.â He perched himself in the one closest to her, arms crossed over his chest in defiance.Â
It took everything she had not to take one of the bags of candy and chuck it with all her might against the wall. Her lips pressed together and she closed her eyes, she was trying to tell herself to keep her cool. At the moment she was angry, but she was cold. Somehow managing to keep her composure despite wanting to snap, but the way he shook it off as if he didnât even know what heâd done. âIâm not going to be ready to talk,â she told him, shoving the bags to the side so harshly they fell off the work desk. âJust leave-- just fuckinâ leave. Are you kiddinâ me right now? You donât show up yesterday, you fuckinâ ditch me and now when I donât even want to deal with you I canât get rid of you?â She wasnât oblivious to the way she felt about him, so she knew her reaction had to do a hell of a lot with this. And though heâd seen her cry just a few days before, she didnât want to do it again. Not when it was him that she was crying over.

âRightâŚâ Mars set his fork down. âIâm the manager of my restaurant and Iâve been working basically alone in running things since I started two years ago. Finally got the okay to hire an assistant manager, and trained her so she knows exactly whatâs going on and how to run things while Iâm gone. So now Iâm taking my first vacation in 2 years.â Marsh said, already feeling the need to defend himself. âDrinking was just the first thing I thought of. People usually do it to celebrate, so.â He sighed. âMaybe on a nicer day, I could take a walk. Itâs a little frigid today.â
âI dunno-- I mean might not be the same but I manage the auto shop and I dunno if I could go on vacation after just traininâ someone.â She shrugged one shoulder. âNot to rain on your parade or anything, mâsure your vacationâs well deserved, maybe you should just uh-- turn your cell phone off yâknow?â She suggested. âYeah, I mean âround here any cause for celebrationâs cause for a drink, and if itâs somethinâ terrible? Another reason for a drink. LSU beatinâ Bama had everyone from here to Tuscaloosa drunk as a skunk.â

âI just finished training my assistant manager⌠which means, I am officially on vacation. Which means I can actually do normal things and be fun. Problem is, I donât do a lot of âfunâ things any more.â Marsh looked down at his lunch, taking another bite and sighing. âWhat do people do on their days off? Watch TV, I guess? I have a whole week off. Should I get drunk?â
@frostfordstartâ
âYouâre goinâ on vacation after just traininâ your assistant manager?â Not that Remy would ever consider having an assistant manager-- or going on vacation, but the thought made her uncomfortable without even knowing what he did for a living. âYeah, get drunk-- day drinkinâs a thing now. Iâd say go up to the riverbank now but youâll catch your death considerinâ the weather.â
isaacxcohenâ:
@frostfordstartâ
It was another night after his monotonous job and the town was dead, typical on a Wednesday night after eight. The only thing that would keep him distracted and give him an excuse to drink was the weekly trivia night hosted at Bootleggerâs. He clicked his tongue as his friend texted him they were no longer coming and shoved his phone back into his pocket. Fuck. Canât be alone at a bar on a week night again, his dad would hear about it. How pathetic that Isaac still had to worry about what daddy would think, he thought bitterly.Â
He turned to the person next to him ordering a drink at the bar. âHey, wanna make a trivia team with me? You apparently need more than one person to be a âteam,ââ he said, playfully rolling his eyes. âIâll even let you pick the team name.â
At this point, all she wanted was to drown herself in bottomless mozzarella sticks, something that wasnât actually on the menu and came more at her requesting order after order until she was sure she felt so stuffed sheâd bleed mozzarella if you so much as poked her. Her bill would be expensive. It was obvious that she was moping, throwing her own damn pity party along with whatever IPA theyâd put in front of her that night.Â
âMâgonna be bad at it probably,â she told him with a dismissive shrug. She was also probably going to be sick in about twenty minutes or so. âUnless by trivia they mean useless 90s garbage then-- mâgonna be a shit teammate.â
kentackermanâ:
He took a step back almost immediately in defense, knowing the tone of her voice a little too well. There was a frustrated tone and then a tone used specifically for being frustrated at him, but he was hoping heâd just stumbled into something he wasnât supposed to and was wrong about the instinct. âYeah, alright. Gonna be damn hard to unload this much though.â He takes a look around and knows. âYou got two cars up on lifts, Rem. You ainât busy. What the fuck?â
Half of her wasnât prepared to do this, she wanted to turn around and bow out of the conversation, she didnât want to fight with Kent, she was just fucking hurt. And then the other half wanted to be angry, wanted him to understand that heâd ditched her. âI donât care what you do with the fuckinâ candy,â she snapped, and it was that half of her that won out. âI donât wanna talk to you right now Kent, take the damn hint.â
danidelgawdoâ:
âI mean, I went to prom, but that hardly counts. I donât know.â It was stupid the more she talked out loud, and feeling stupid just made her want to cry more. She really had been such a fool, thinking that Kent Ackerman was going to sweep her off her feet, when in reality, he wouldnât even remember their meeting. âI just wanted it to be perfect. Didnât you ever have a picture in your head of what you wanted somethinâ to be? I donât even know if Iâm disappointed in him, really. He is who he is, and thatâs not who I wanted. I wanted the person I made up with his face attached, but thatâs not real. Thatâs what hurts, I sâpose. Ainât about fair or not fair.â
âProm counts,â she said in defense, mostly of herself. Prom had counted in her book, though sheâd gone with Kent--as friends-- and ended up dancing with Wade Shannon instead. âYeah and it was nothinâ like what I expectedâ she told her, with a dry humorless laugh that was almost accompanied with tears. Had she thought about her mother and the disappointment that had brought, she might have been joining crying girl in her attempt to drown out her sorrows with alcohol. âYou donât think thatâs about fairness?â Remy turned to look at her, one eyebrow raised. âMânot defendinâ him cause trust me-- all men are shit-- but if you didnât really known him before and you just had this idealistic view that he didnât measure up to?â She shrugged, not wanting to tread dangerous waters. âWhat did he do that was so disappointinâ anyway?â
Why canât you accept that she might be living a good, honest life? That sheâs an attentive partner and a good mom? Because I wanted that mom. I wanted the mom who made me afternoon snacks instead of just telling me to look for loose fries in the McDonaldâs ball pit. Why does Patricia get that mom?
chandlerheineâ:
âWhereâs that sidekick of yours?â Chandler asked Remy as they sat down with their coffees. He looked around the cafe, finding Kent nowhere to be seen. âFeels like itâs dangerous to let you two wander outside without each other since you share half a brain cell and all.âÂ
He was joking, mostly about Remy. His cousin, of course, had at least one brain cell all to herself. Chandler wasnât so sure about Kent. Theyâd always been attached at the hip, or if they hadnât, it was some kind of Mandela effect, thinking of Kent when Remy was around and Remy when Kent was around. Kind of nauseating.Â
Kind of heartbreaking.Â
Almost felt like Remyâs relationship with Kent was stronger than his relationship to his wife had ever been.Â
@remyhcineâ
Subtlety wasnât her strong suit. She made it all too obvious that she didnât want to answer his question by taking a too long sip of her coffee, covering her face up with the little plastic cup. In her wake to avoid talking about him, she burned her tongue, of course. âBrain cellâs mine,â she mumbled without any humor, eyes focusing on the pattern on the table so she didnât have to think about the stupid fact that she-- missed him.Â
This wasnât the first time someone had asked her where he was and it drove her nearly crazy to think that sheâd been so constantly questioned about stupid Kent Ackerman, as if they werenât two different people with two different lives. Sheâd never been so angry with him that sheâd gone this long though, this time sheâd been more than angry, sheâd been hurt. And jealous. It sucked. âI dunno where he is-- I donât care.â Lie. âProbably out somewhere with a sprained ankle and a cracked skull knowinâ him.âÂ
danidelgawdoâ:
There was something awfully familiar about the girl wearing her sunglasses inside, but Dani was a little tipsy and a lot distraught. She had been told so many times in her life that she was overdramatic, that she needed to make her feelings smaller, but here she was again, letting them get to her head. Dani glanced over quickly before turning her attention back to the beer in front of her. She leaned over and grabbed another plastic cup from behind the bar, completely ignoring etiquette and rules. Filling it with lukewarm beer from her pitcher, she pushed it in front of the girl. âItâs justâwhat was I waitinâ for? Iâm twenty-four and Iâve never been on a damn date. Iâve never had a boyfriend. I just waited, and waited. And I wasnât even waitinâ on him, âcause he clearly doesnât even know who I am. But I thought he was perfect, and if the perfect guy doesnât even exist, then why did I waste so much time watinâ?â A fresh well of tears spilled over, cutting off her diatribe.
Not that she wasnât against some sort of...girl power rally, Remy certainly never turned down a session to talk about how men were trash, often having to get into an altercation with someone who overheard and dared use the dreaded, not all men phrase, but her spirit was pretty damn low at that point and she hadnât expected this poor girl to start spilling all of her guts so quickly. Still-- despite the fact that she was thinking of how to make a quick exit without having to use the words, âbummerâ she couldnât help but feel bad. âYouâve never been on a date?â It wasnât her place to ask why, she knew some people were particular, some didnât want to date and others were just...not date material, but she wondered why when it came to this person in particular, she seemed devastated, Remy would have guessed sheâd been broken up with. âOh god,â and the tears made her uncomfortable, this level of vulnerability made her uncomfortable, last time sheâd cried it had been to, well-- he who shall not be named, and certainly not in public. âPlease donât cry,â but maybe thatâs what she needed, catharsis. Without waiting to ask, she reached over the counter and grabbed a bunch of napkins, handing them to her and then offering her sunglasses up, in case she wanted to get rid of evidence. âHeâs not worth your tears, and-- I mean I dunno...you donât have to wait for the perfect guy to manifest, mânot sayinâ that he exists or he doesnât exist but either way it doesnât mean you should wait for him and only him. Howâs that fair to you?âÂ
ofmatildaâ:
mattie came from the kind of place where everybody focused on your face and looks in general.  âokayâfair point.â she giggled, there were times when sheâd needed to walk back in there and nobody even looked up at her.  âbut i think people would notice if their job was amateur compared to what theyâre used to.â she knew the basics, but she wasnât a pro by any means. remy made sure that mattie could fix a tire and check her own oil though.  âthat i can do. so long as weâre sharing.â remy said, picking up the desk phone and putting it at her ear already ready to make the phone call to order pizza.Â
Her mood is still a bit rotten but sheâs suddenly feeling thankful for having Mattie around, she had to make a mental note to ask her dad about giving her a raise or a bonus. âThey wonât notice,â she told her with a shrug, not that she didnât pride herself in her work, but for the most part all they paid attention to was if she happened to replace the sticker on their windshield which told them their next visit. She made an attempt to wait patiently as she dialed up the Cuttery, though she was leaning forward and whispering âextra cheeseâ as she tried to talk so someone. âDid you get the extra cheese?â she asked giving her an apologetic look for trying to interrupt. âI should show you how to replace your windshield wipers next-- or maybe how to swap out dead bulbs, canât have you gettinâ stranded with no headlights.â
