Angela would always try her hardest to find the joys in the smallest of things. It’s what she always had done, ever since she was little. It had always been a particular tactic of hers, and one of the reasons that most the people she knew always found her to be so happy and positive. “‘course I’ll do that, Ethan, don’t be silly. If it’s gonna make ya real happy, I ain’t got a single issue with it.” She smiled. It was a weekly bake Angie did to ensure that everyone who adored her bakes, got some sort of treat. “Today’s my day, sure.” She chuckled, nodding in agreement. She adored how playful the conversation was. “We just gotta make a day for you, now.”

“I mean I should probably go easy, other than the beard, you’re just not aging so well buddy,” Austin joked. Who was he kidding though, the beard had really only upped Ethan’s game these days. “Maybe I can help you corner the market on that whole silver fox thing?” He nudged him, looking around him dramatically as if trying to figure out where he was but only serving to disorient himself further. “Left you say? But what if I insist we go right…. right into lots of corn stocks… left it is!” Austin said with more confidence than he should. “You really got to catch up so we really got get out of here.” Austin insisted. “So what’s up man? I feel like we haven’t hung out in awhile. Catch me up?” He asked as they navigated through the corn maze.

“Ouch. You think you know a guy,” Ethan joked, shaking his head like he was completely dumbfounded. “Have I already reached silver fox status? Here I thought I had a few years before I got promoted.” He smiled, looking back out at the corn maze ahead of them since he was probably their only hope of getting out of there. No pressure or anything. “Listen, with my star quality navigational skills, we’ll be out of here in no time.” Or they’d be free for the sheer fact that he was a teensy bit more sober than his buddy. “For a small town where I can’t turn a corner without bumping into someone I’ve known for years, we really haven’t.” They’d been due for a beer and game night for some time now. Maybe a day of racing the dirt bikes. “Well, nothin’ exciting, as you could probably guess. Helpin’ some couple design their first home. Helpin’ dad around the shop. Definitely not drawing one damn comic I like.” Trying and failing to pick up his guitar again. “Been pretty boring, all things considered. How’ve you been, though? What’s goin’ on in the exciting life of Austin Lockhart?”

“You know once upon a time happy seemed like a very simple concept, I guess that growing up though huh?” Hannah said with a small shrug. Get married, have babies, build a life and everything would be alright. She’d done everything right, did what everyone expected from her and she thought that might be the formula for things turning out alright but life took work. “Oh great,” Hannah muttered as they finally reached the front of the line, she was practically bouncing on the heals of feet in anticipation of what would come next. Taking several deep breaths as they got settled into there seats and Hannah wrung her hands together as they started moving. Watching everything with cautious eyes, she knew the scarecrow was going to jump out her but it didn’t stop her from jumping when it did. Her hands over her mouth muffling the scream. “Why do I do this to myself.” Hannah whined as she looked over at Ethan with a giggle. She turned back just in time for several clowns to jump out fo the cornfield causing Hannah to scream. “OH my god I hate clowns.” Hannah said reaching over and shaking Ethan. “Why am I doing this?” She said with a mixture of laughter and fear.

Remy scoffed. “You wish you could look like a troll doll.” She topped it all off with a snort, already planning on chucking pumpkin guts at him once she got inside the stuff. She pretended not to be listening as she sat cross legged in front of her own pumpkin, eyeing it curiously to see how she’d make her vision come to life, while Ethan’s seemed simple enough, she was too go big or go home for hers. “M’gonna need to make a stencil,” she told him, already deciding that she’d spend entirely too much time on the thing. “It’s showtime,” she said in response to him, cutting her own hole and digging in with too much excitement. She flicked a seed at him first to get his attention, Remy wanted him to see her holding a handful of the insides. “Take it back or you’re gonna be washin’ this crap out of your beard for days.”

“Oh I can’t wait to see that,” he said, shaking his head as he looked at her pumpkin, trying to see what vision she would make come to life. Stencils were serious business. If she was gettin’ that deep into it, he could only imagine what she had in mind. A seed plinked off his nose around then, and he turned in time to see her hand loaded with pumpkin guts. So that’s how it was gonna be, huh? Ah, who was he kidding? He figured it would come to this. It usually did. “Take back what?” he asked, slowly scooping up his own handful of mushy guts, feigning obvious confusion. Didn’t ladies love the smell of pumpkin? She’d be doing him a favor. “That you may or may not have your own tiny replica of the town hidden in the attic somewhere?” He gasped dramatically. “You want me to lie?”

“That woman’s an angel, lemme tell you. I mean, the word’s literally in her name. Do a little rearranging and you get ‘a angel.’” Amazing how he could make that connection when he still wasn’t sure if he was seeing two of his drink or not. “After becoming champion of pumpkin bowling, she offered to make the best apple pie. Hell, her job is doin’ charity work. How much more giving can you get?” Ethan smiled and shook his head, sipping from his beer bottle as he thought of good ole Angie. “If I could cook worth a damn, I’d gift her with the best feast. I know she misses Jude an awful lot, and if a whole big basket of food could help make her feel better, I’d be happy to make it. Maybe I should just get her somethin’ from the bakery, I always see her in the place.” Did the bakery have gift cards? Or certificates? Or whatever you wanted to call it? “Maybe next time I gotta go to the big apple, I’ll ask if she wants to go.” He laughed as he thought about it, realizing he’d just made the best link in the world. “An apple for an apple!” @angelahoward

“Man gets a lot of shit, and I can see why on some parts, but…he’s still fuckin’ Tanner. Same guy we’ve known forever.” Ethan took a drink, giving a shrug at the same time. “He’s gettin’ shit from the rumor mill, too, and it’s not like Hannah’s out here bashin’ the guy. And he’s not bashin’ her. So why the hell is everyone else?” Something just didn’t add up there, particularly right then, with too much whiskey in his system. Made everything a lot slower. “Whatever’s gonna happen is gonna happen. No use tryin’ to get ‘em back together or keep ‘em apart.” It just wasn’t one of those cases. “Now, we’ve beat that subject to death. I wanna talk about how good a dad he is to those kids of his.” Reminded Ethan of his dad sometimes. No matter how hard things got, the love for his kids never wavered, and he stayed strong for them. “He’s always fun to go flippin’ houses with, too. He’s just…” Ethan made a face, trying to find the right word. Finally, he stood and put a foot on his chair, only swaying slightly and sloshing his drink a little. His voice didn’t boom over the music, but to him it felt like he was yelling his declaration to the bar, a man unafraid of judging eyes. “I don’t hate Tanner Cartwright…and I’m not afraid to say it!” @tannercartwright

“One of the finest damn women you’ll find anywhere. And definitely not what she’s been made out to be.” He leaned against the bar top, shaking his head. How could people so easily believe that someone as sweet as Hannah could do half the shit she was bein’ accused of? Everyone forget to think for themselves all of a sudden? The things people could do, man. “I wanna wrap her in a blanket like she does with those kids, keep her safe from internet trolls, town trolls, all the little shits who should be under a bridge.” He waved his hand in the air to encompass all the trolls. “She’ll bounce back from whatever this shit show is, though.” He wasn’t one to be optimistic, but he did know Hannah. “She’s got that whole quiet strength about her.” He smiled. “I see it when I talk to her, and I see it when she smiles for the internet. I watch those entries all the time. Always kinda nice to know she can be around, even when she’s not.” He finished off his drink, twirling the empty bottle on the wooden surface. When he spoke next, he mumbled almost incoherently. “Why couldn’t I have a mom like her?” @hannahcartwright

“Why do you wanna talk about Gambit right now? He’s cool and all, but…” Ethan paused, thought about it a moment. “Oooh. You mean Heine, not LeBeau. Got it.” He snickered, taking another drink. This would be a lot easier. “What’s there to say? I love the girl like she’s my own flesh and blood. Wait…scratch that. You know what I mean.” He laughed again. Wow, he was missin’ all the marks tonight. The more he thought about her, though, the more his smile faded. “She deserves better than she’s gotten. I give her a hard time, but she’s a good kid, and I don’t know what I’d do without her. Any time she gets sad about something, I just wanna fix it. I wanna make the bad things go away, and stick a fist through anything else.” Was that too sappy? Felt too sappy. He hiccuped, taking another swig of beer. “Yeah, the little demon’s something special. Maybe just…” he leaned closer to whisper conspiratorially, “don’t tell her I’m here.” He leaned back again, swaying a little. “I don’t want her to worry ‘bout me. Most explosive breakup?

“Oh, boy…probably one I had in college? We’d been exclusive for about five months, and I was headin’ home for spring break I think. She asked if she could come home with me to meet the family. Funny thing is: I never pictured her meetin’ my family. She was a nice girl and all, at the time, but I never thought about us that far in the future. The idea just…wasn’t sittin’ right with me because it wasn’t somethin’ I was ready for yet. And I told her that. So then we got into the ‘where do you see this relationship going’ talk, and it…wasn’t pretty. She thought I was stringin’ her along just to get sex, that I didn’t really see her as my girlfriend, and no matter how many times I tried to explain myself, it was just goin’ in one ear and out the other. There was yelling, name calling, the whole nine yards. We broke up on the spot, and I thought that was the end of it. Got the evil eye from her and her friends any time I crossed paths with ‘em after that, of course, but oh no, that wasn’t all. The assholes dumped trash all over my car. Wrote ‘man whore’ in lipstick on the windshield. Safe to say, I stayed far away from dating for a while after that. I did not have the energy to go through that again any time soon.”
