i really like how the milkman exists as an entirely fossilized character who now serves no purpose other than to fuck people's wives for the punchline

I live in Chicagoland and have family friends who are brown and undocumented. It’s not good here.
I want to specify that the US government ICE agents rapelled from Blackhawk helicopters to take over an apartment building, breaking open apartment doors in the middle of the night to drag barely-clad residents from their homes and detain everyone in UHaul trucks with the children zip-tied to each other. Regardless of citizenship.
There was too much traffic today, and an ICE agent deployed a tear gas canister in traffic in response.
This is not normal.
From the very bottom of my heart: what the ACTUAL FUCK
It’s not even near me yet, but where I live there’s lots of brown folks so they’ll come.
This is surreal. We’re being attacked by the United States.

Most mainstream media is barely covering it.
I genuinely wish I were surprised by that.
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosi
Spread this far and wide - there's no paywall.
the abuse and humiliation Greta Thunberg is going through at the hands of the Israelis needs to be put in context with the dehumanising torture Palestinian prisoners are put through on the daily: the fact that darling Greta can be blindfolded and forced to crawl and kiss the Israeli flags - despite her international popularity and the protection her own government should guarantee her - is only possible because Israelis are allowed to beat, humiliate, starve and rape Palestinians to literal death without anyone stopping them.
Do not think for a moment that this admin is only going after trans folks. They are ultimately going after the whole LGBTQ community. They start small, like getting rid of a hotline option, then go BIG.

There's an ActionNetwork petition you can sign. Don't let the Trump administration win without a fight.
Non-Americans can also sign. We need all the help we can get the next 1,307 days

sometimes I wonder how y'all are obsessed with specific characters and I'm like "why them" but then I remember that sometimes its literally not your choice you just look at them wrong and all of a sudden they're taking up your every thought forever

241 pages on the science of maximising animal welfare in the slaughter process
I don't expect anyone to read that report fully, and it's sadly 21 years old. However, its very existence suggests:
Animal slaughter rules do take minimizing pain, suffering, and panic into consideration. There are also things like practicality, food safety, and safety of the slaughterman to consider, but they don't ignore animal welfare.
Sometimes people tell me they/someone they know/a group of people that they mythologize "have a better way of killing their meat animals" or are "so much more humane than slaughterhouses because they kill the animals instantly!" Hate to break it to you, but people saying that are, at best, lying to separate themselves from an industry so they can claim superiority, and, at worst, killing animals in a way that is not up to humane standards and therefore more painful and probably illegal if they're selling the meat.
There is a huge body of science here. Some rando with zero knowledge of research or practice regarding animal slaughter isn't going to have a better idea, I'm sorry. If someone has a better idea that's actually informed by serious research and practice, well, I'd love to hear that, but they should probably talk to the Humane Slaughter Association with their credentials and enormous binder of research first.
I've been to a few slaughterhouses and witnessed them killing the animals, but they wouldn't let me film. An indigenous Sami reindeer herder let me film him slaughtering his reindeer, and I posted the video to IG (TW, animal blood and death, duh) and it was functionally very similar to what I saw in the US slaughterhouses.
Comment section: "How dare you! That's a horrible way to kill an animal!"
Humane slaughter expert I interviewed for the Carcass book (paraphrased): "I'm not allowed to formally rate it unless I'm there in person, but from what I can see, that is a perfect slaughter in line with our standards."
TL;DR: It's ok if you are against slaughtering animals for meat in general, I understand that! But if you take issue with the standard methods, I encourage the realization that animal welfare is of concern and enforcement in slaughter in many/probably most countries, based on years of scientific research!
My brother in law recently became a veterinarian and it has really driven the point home as to how fucking bonkers veterinary medicine is. We don't expect human physicians to really know much outside of their own specialty - a dentist, an otolaryngologist, and a maxillofacial surgeon are three totally different dudes. Meanwhile a veterinarian at a wildlife rehab center is doing orthopedic surgery on a hawk and then doing rounds on baby hedgehogs in the hedgehog NICU and administering antibiotics to a ratsnake. And he also knows how to perform surgical interventions on a cow! What the fuck! Those are all totally, wildly different kinds of animal!!
Shout out to veterinarians, they know Too Much.
I always think about that one post that was like "how come the surviving doctors in zombie apocalypse stories are always veterinarians" and the reply "because veterinarians make 'not getting bitten by their patients' a core skill"
