When I first got into Shokugeki,I admit,I was expecting for me to fall in love with Erina as a character and with SouEri. Even before I started Shokugeki,I would always hear about SouEri from it’s loyal fanbase and I got into this show expecting a good pairing,with a solide development and connection considering how much people were in love with this ship.However,It was not the case for me. Not only I could not fall in love with Erina’s character,but Megumi was literally the first character that I got to like. I just love how much development this girl got. She went from a girl that was scared and doubtful of her own skills to a confident girl who would fight even the best cook just to defend her friends. Whereas Erina,even if she did become supportable and I definetly see why she’s so loved,her development always felt forced to me. I’m usually not the type to get into the shy/quiet girl characters as I’m a Tsundere sucker but I just couldn’t get into Erina’s character and to this day,I have a hard time to do so.I admit,I loved her during the arc before the whole Noir cookers,Blue,because I could finally see something different with her and not just the usual. However that was stepped on in the following arcs as Erina did nothing but to revert back to her season 3 side where she needed to be rescued AGAIN by Souma.As for SouEri,I honestly don’t get why people love it so much other from the fact that they’re good as potental rivals and cookers. She may have inspired Souma but development wise and romantic wise,besides very few scenes,their chemistry is just not there. I tried,I truly tried to get into this ship as I love this type of cat/mouse relationships and I especially loved how they always tried to show eachother their best,but I could never feel anything romantic from them romance wise. The chemistry is just not there. It’s as if you put two random characters with eachother and call it a day. I understand the intention but to me,it was just badly executed. However we do have a pairing here who not only progressed together,were always by eachothers side,always supported eachother and had the same cooking and gentle gestures that some SouEri moments had. SouMegu has that. SouMegu has the neccesary chemistry and you can feel it even when they don’t talk through the stares Souma gives each time Megumi does something for his sake or for her friends Sake.You have Megumi believing in him even when he doesen’t in his own self. You have Megumi always supporting Souma and being by his side no matter what situation and trying to help him with what she can while she is understanding his cooking while Souma always returns the favour.You have them spending quality time by themselves and forming a strong connection together.They are always defending eachother. They showed chemistry with eachother from the very beginning.In my opinion,Erina is just not fit for Souma as a romantic partner. Again,i do see what they tried to do but the writing was so bad that their chemistry felt nothing but forced.
Now,I don’t want them to end up togehter but they obviously will because why not? I’ll be happy for SouEri fans because they got their ship,but it doesen’t change the fact that SouEri is a badly written ship,with forced chemistry. It’s just so sad because I truly wanted to fall in love with this pairing and despite the fact that I do love some scenes that they shared together,SouMegu just won me so much more than SouEri ever did. Their connection was too strong for me.And Even if it’ll obviously not become canon,it still remains a good pairing.
