March 5, 2014 - Rep. Luis Gutierrez gives House Republicans a Deporter-in-Chief quiz. Watch to see which President got five dubious gold stars for immigration enforcement.
Today I gave President Obama five dubious gold stars for immigration enforcement. The position of House Republicans that the President cannot be trusted to enforce the law just does not fit the facts. Watch the full speech here: youtu.be/PJ17ACipIsk.

This week Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing suggesting that the President is not upholding his constitutional duty to enforce immigration laws, even as this administration has deported people in record numbers. Congressman Luis Gutierrez called them out for having another "do-nothing hearing in this do-nothing Congress." He told them that if they did not act on immigration reform, he and others would insist the President act to address the deportation crisis.
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition hosted a bipartisan panel discussion with Illinois elected officials on immigration reform on February 18, 2014. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D) joined Sen. Mark Kirk (R) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R) to discuss how to move immigration reform forward in Congress.
February 11, 2014 - Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez (IL-04) responded to Speaker John Boehner's comments about immigration on the House floor. The Congressman said, "I wish you would tell the U.S. citizen whose spouse won't be with them on Valentine's Day, or the days that follow to help raise their U.S. citizen children. Or tell the estimated 5,100 children in foster care because their parents are in detention or have already been deported" how the President can't be trusted to enforce immigration law.
Mr. Speaker, that President Obama cannot be trusted to enforce immigration law? That just doesn’t make any sense to anyone who follows this issue. Every day, day after day, week after week and year after year, people are being ‘disappeared’ by our immigration enforcement machine. Another 1,100 today. And tomorrow.
Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez House Floor Speech, February 11, 2014
I want to make it clear that the #immigrant community and the huge movement behind #immigration reform -- Republicans, Democrats, businesses, clergy, and everyone else -- we are not going away. We are not taking "wait" or "maybe" or no" for an answer.
I think #citizenship is important because it means everyone has the same rights AND the same responsibilities. #Immigration and citizenship have worked pretty well for the U.S. for more than 200 years.
As we fight for justice for #immigrants, we stand on the shoulders of giants like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and leaders who fought to expand civil rights and increase opportunities for all people regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or background. This is not baseball where we go play nine innings and we are done. The struggle for #justice and #equality begins anew every day.
On, January 15, the House voted 359-67 to pass a bipartisan government funding bill. We need to continue working together in the same way to reach an agreement to fix our broken immigration system.
Thank you to the fasters with Fast for Families. We have seen your witness; we have seen your hunger; and we too are hungry for justice. As you take Fast4Families out into the nation, I will continue to work with my colleagues across the aisle like Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) to address this moral crisis that has impacted millions of families by making immigration reform the top priority in 2014.
2013 E Pluribus Unum Prizes Keynote Address by Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL)
from Migration Policy Institute
Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ immigration task force and is the author of the recent book, Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill, provided keynote remarks for the Migration Policy Institute’s 2013 E Pluribus Unum Prizes awards ceremony, held in Washington DC in December 2013. This year’s prize winners included Twin Cities-based Neighborhood Development Center, the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School in Washington DC, and the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. Kaiser Permanente received the E Pluribus Unum Prizes’ Corporate Leadership Award. After an introduction by Michael Fix, Senior Vice President and Co-Director of MPI’s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, Congressman Gutierrez spoke about the importance of integration in the immigration debate. He discussed his belief that immigrant integration efforts are key to allowing immigrants to fully participate in and contribute to society in the United States and his steadfast support for immigration reform.
