“that’s what i hear, but it’s not exactly like i’m involved in much world-saving.” lois knew her strengths, and she had to admit, universe-deciding battles were not her strong suit. words, communication, connection—that was what she was good at. when it came down to the wire, she was helpful at things that maybe didn’t involve so much physical strength. “you tell ‘em, dude.”

“I’M SURE HE’LL BE ABLE TO handle it. Wouldn’t it be funny if he shows up anyway? Suddenly he approaches us at some concert like surprise!” Kyle chuckles as he shakes his head at the thought. “You have a point there. How is he?” He decides to ask, not that he has met him personally, but from what he has heard the kid was a joy. “I’m not fashionable, oh no. I went to Starbucks with paint in my hair once.”

“Maybe he’d get jealous and actually want to come if we went to a concert without him,” she replied with a laugh. “Even better, what if we just—invented grunge in the 70s? What kind of a trip would that be?” Lois mused with a grin on her features. She sighed. “I don’t know,” she replied, shaking her head. “He’s still in the future, I think. Everything got muddled up and I’m not sore where any of my family are.”

Lois had to say that of all the strange things she had seen, this had to be one of the strangest—she didn’t really have much experience with ghosts. She tilted her head as she looked the woman over, her jaw dropped slightly as she thought of all the questions that she wanted to ask, questions, she was sure, wouldn’t really get straightforward answers—if there were scientific studies and terms for the paranormal, Lois was sure she would have heard of it by now. “Do you still eat?” Of course, food was the first thing on Lois’ mind. “Wait, you don’t have to answer that—I don’t want to pry or anything about your digestive system.”

Lois didn’t have much to do n 1973, which killed her. She had read at least 20 books from the expansive shelves in the library, and she had wandered around most of the town and found that there was nothing particularly interesting. She knew the ins and outs of the mansion. Now, she was getting to the point where she needed something to keep her mind occupied, otherwise, she was sure that she would combust out of sheer boredom. She was lying across one of the sofas in the library—she wasn’t very big, so it turned out that she could only take up about 3/4s of one, even when she was completely stretched out. She put her hands over her eyes, already to the point of talking to herself. “Find a story, Lois. Journalism is the fucking same in 1973, just find a story, and you’ll have something to do with yourself.”

Even though Lois had no powers to boast of, she wasn’t completely without an ability to defend herself. Her father had been very strict about making sure that both of his daughters were able to properly defend themselves—part of him had expected both of them to go into the military, like he did, and in a way, Lois had, with her tours served embedded as a journalist with a marine corps unit. Of course, not everything she had written had been entirely flattering—and that had made him furious—but that, she supposed, was the price to pay for good journalism. Still, she was grateful for her father’s strict regimen that day, when someone tried to grab her as she was walking back to the mansion at night. She immediately gained leverage over her attacker and flipped him over her shoulder, slamming him into the pavement hard before she kicked him in the ribs. “Just because I’m 5′4 doesn’t mean you can grab me—bitch!”

Lois didn’t know how she was supposed to occupy her time here in 1973. In the future, her life had been very different—she had been working full time, she had been a foreign correspondent in a war zone, she had been an activist. Here, it felt like the days moved slowly when things weren’t happening. She knew she should have been grateful for that, but, at heart, Lois was an adrenaline junkie—she needed something to keep her going. Instead, she was lying upside down on the sofa, reading the same line on the same page of her book over and over, none of it sinking in. She groaned and closed the book, tossing it to the side and instead pressing her hands over her face.

Lois didn’t know most of the people in the mansion, but she intended to change that—she knew that it would be difficult to get to know all of these people, but the way she saw it, Lois had all the time in the world. It wasn’t like things were moving along quickly in 1973, and she knew that it was going to take a long time for anything to get solved—as always. So, she didn’t try too hard with it, instead letting people come to her as they did, as with Lenny. She rested her chin in the palm of her hand as she leaned against the table, practicing good interview techniques but also trying to keep things relaxed. “Where did you grow up? What was it like?”

Lois had heard of the shape-shifting mutant, though, she had to admit, seeing her actually shape-shift was a lot more unnerving than Lois would have liked to admit. She swallowed, setting her jaw. “I have to admit, you kind of remind me of one of those...those holographic stamps, you know? Tilt it one way and it looks like one thing, tilt it another way and it looks like another thing.”

It seemed that Lois was just going to be friends with all of the Green Lanterns—she was already good friends with Guy and Kyle before she even came back to 1973, and she had been the one to find Jessica when she first arrived in this time, and now, she was talking to yet another one. “I’m always fascinated by the relationships you have with your rings,” she said, leaning forward and glancing at his finger for a moment before looking back up at him. “I hear that they can be little shits, sometimes.”

Lois didn’t make too many distinctions between heroes and villains—she had learned a long time ago that the world was not so simple as to be divided so easily. She knew that there were nuances to everything, ways that the universe kept its balance while the people weren’t necessarily doled out perfectly on a scale that weighed good versus evil. That was why she had no qualms talking to anyone in 1973—Lois had long since stopped being afraid. “Do you miss it? The future?” Lois paused. “I can’t decide if I do or don’t.”

Lois didn’t have many people around in 1973, so those she did know, she clung to—the last thing she wanted was to be kept out of the loop because she wasn’t directly helpful or she wasn’t her goddamn husband. That was why she often asked Kara if there was anything going on that she should know about, anything that might help when it came to making some sort of estimate on when she got to go home. “It’s been feeling like there’s nothing going on,” she said, shaking her head. “I want to finish this here and I want to go back home.”

“YOU SHOULD FILM HIS REACTION when you tell him that one.” Kyle chuckles as he can already see how that would go. “I’m totally going to. Guy doesn’t even like that type of music, but he just tags along anyway.” This way he wouldn’t have to worry about Kyle going alone, and then he wouldn’t have to go through listening to it all the time. “Snacks are always a must.” He responds with a wave of his finger. “You’ll create a fashion statement, what’s wrong with that?”

“Oh, he’s going to get so mad, I’m so ready.” Lois scoffed, shaking her head. “Then Guy can stay at home and be a party pooper all by himself,” she replied with a laugh. Lois nodded. “Listen, when you have a kid who’s a Kryptonian and eats through everything in about ten seconds, snacks become the single most important thing in your life,” she said, grinning and crinkling up her nose. “I’m not as daring with my fashion choices as you, I think.”

“ thank you. i really appreciate all you’re doing for me. “ jessica smiled at the woman as she rambled, feeling oddly comforted by her rambling. it meant she wasn’t the only nervous one there. and it was nice to hear her mention all of the positives of being taken back in time. “ yeah, kinda sucks that cell phones aren’t really a thing. i spend way too much time playing games on my phone. or cable for that matter. aren’t there only like three channels in this time? that’s wild. “ she glanced at the woman curiously. “ oh. you take pictures? “ jess smiled and shook her head, accepting but still waving off her apology. “ don’t worry about it. i actually spent the last few years learning how to interact with people again myself so i get it. my friend group as of now is pretty much limited the justice league of all people. “ she nodded. “ lois lane. oh, the lois lane. wow. it’s so nice to meet you. “

lois nodded. “it’d be really nice to just be able to google where you are, too. google isn’t a thing in 1973, and while we shouldn’t be so reliant on a corporate overlord for our information, it’s also really fucking convenient.” lois nodded. “yeah, no hbo yet,” she replied with a snort. lois nodded. “when i can. i’m not very good at it, but i’m trying to get better—it’d definitely help with my job if i was able to take pictures that didn’t look like they were taken by a five year old,” she joked lightly. lois’ eyebrows shot up. “i didn’t realize i was the lois lane,” she said with a laugh. “is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

“As much as I wish I could say I was surprised to see you here, Tony...I’m not.” She leaned against the table where he was sitting. “I knew that you’d be attracted to all the trouble.” Lois was only teasing—after she had spent almost two months with him, writing a feature for the New York Times magazine that had gotten her the first real attention she’d had as a journalist, they had built an easy rapport and a friendship that Lois actually ended up valuing over some of her older relationships. There was a level of understanding between them that just felt natural—even if he was acting like a little shit half the time.

“OF COURSE I WOULD, maybe he just needs to listen to better music.” Kyle laughs since he does mean well after all. “I should be taking you to concerts, not him.” He says with a smile as he starts picturing what she would look like with the haircut she mentions. “You should do it, I think you could pull it off.” 

“That’s what I told him! Now I have the added bonus of having his husband agree with me.” Lois laughed, tilting her head back. “Uh, yeah, you totally should. I’m great at concerts. I have fun, mom energy, and I always bring snacks.” Lois paused before shifting the hair at the sides of her face, pretending she had feathered bangs. “You think so? But what if I get catapulted into the future, like, tomorrow? Then I’ll be stuck in the future with a Farah Fawcett haircut.”

It was the happiest Iris had felt in a while – not only Barry was there, but also she got to see her friends more often than she did back in their time. Living under the same roof definitely had that effect. And since the stadium mission, the spirits had been lifted and people were more confident about their abilities to protect this place. She smiled at Lois’ words and raised her glass. “I’m very glad you’re here. Don’t get me wrong, I like everyone here, but sometimes I feel like a fish out of the water.” She took a sip of her wine and sighed, resting her head against the back of the couch. “What were you doing in Afghanistan?”

Lois wanted to go back to the future. Badly. She felt claustrophobic here, with all these people who knew her too well, who expected things from her that she didn’t know if she could deliver anymore. She was notoriously flaky these days, independent to a fault—she wasn’t as put together as she used to be, before she had gone overseas and been embedded with that unit. Things had changed for her. Drastically. “I know what you mean. I can’t remember the last time I felt so out of place.” She shrugged. “You know. Foreign correspondence work. Covering U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan even though the war was supposed to be over.”
