she keeps her voice soft , though not without its trademark snark. but even that feels forced , a performance of normality as she sits beside his hospital bed. her own bandaged shoulder throbs with every move , but it’s nothing compared to the fear that had gripped her heart as she waited for her brother to wake up. their parents had been taking turns , each shift ending with an offer to take her back home to sleep or shower or -- well , anything but sit vigil. but she couldn’t. no matter how much shit she gives chad , he’s her twin. her best friend. and whereas after the attacks , she’d needed some stitches and a bottle of painkillers , he-- even now , as he begins to come to , she doesn’t want to think think about what could have been. what almost was. “ welcome back to the world. ”
