a S h i n i g a m i ?
You let her fall in love and laugh as she destroys h e r s e l f.
twicetold:
He could never completely trust that what this Shinigami told him was true, but the pieces she offered up were too perfect a fit to not take into consideration. That she would lie was also carefully considered in conjunction. Logic could discount neither without tangible confirmation.
Multiple Shinigami. Multiple notes. Brought to the human world by Shinigami who also carry their own Death Note. Humans and Shinigami can kill using the Note. Notes can accidentally fall into human hands, more likely to have been given. A plan? One of the rules in the Death Note is fake.
Would a Shinigami kill for a human?
“I see. I thought you would say that.” He stopped the methodical stacking of dice, each edge perfectly aligned with the one beneath and instead reached up to slide white strands between his fingers in a pure display of thought. His eyes fell beneath a skewed fringe, hiding the concentration that creased his brow.
“I’m going to give you a scenario. If you wish, tell me what you think.”
“A Shinigami comes to the human world and brings a Note. This Note is not the Shinigami’s own but another. This Note falls to a human who begins killing under the guise of Kira. A second Shinigami appears with a second Note, given to another human who kills as the second Kira. Kira and the second Kira meet up and begin working as one. A fake rule is written in the Note, suggesting collaboration with a Shinigami.”
He tipped his head, watching her carefully. “Both Kira and the second Kira were being investigated by the Japanese task force. The detective working in collaboration with the task force was killed while both Kira’s were being observed, consequently freeing both from suspicion. However, the detective was killed by a Shinigami. In that case–.” He held up the Death Note that had come into their hands, the Shinigami before him visible only once the members of the SPK had touched it.
“–The SPK getting hold of the Note and the Shinigami who brought it is part of Kira’s plan.”
Once again, she hold her silence. Had she given Misa away? Was she now in danger? Had in her lust to try to protect Misa, even from herself, just sentenced her to death? But her silence was just as condemning. Perhaps instead she should suggest a modification to these thoughts.
“An intriguing scenario. And yet the fact that we are talking at all suggests that if this was the one known as Kira’s plan, something went wrong. I will tell you something about the Shinigami realm. Wither it has interest to you, I know not, but do not take it for granted. Not often do Shinigami speak of their home.”
She turns to face him, yellow eyes staring downward at him, lips frowning fiercely.
“It is a barren place. There are a number of shinigami and their king who rules them, and yet it seems most of the laws concern the note, and how it is to be used. We watch the humans, but laziness has long since spread, and we gamble and laze away even as you humans grow and change. There are not many shinigami who watch the humans, but those who do are entranced to interfere. A note, perhaps. Other ways. In a way we are forced to interest ourselves in what you do. It is unheard of to take an interest in a singular human. And yet it is also unheard of to view you humans.”
Perhaps he would understand that she meant she was here because of a human. A second death note. The second Kira was under her watch. An unspoken threat.
“Returning to your scenario, there is one error. Your guardian Watari lives. A shinigami working for kira would have killed both of them, possibly in an attempt to avoid you getting so close to solving the pieced your detective left.”
Tbh so far it kind of feels like Rem has the relationship with Ryuk that one might associate with their cousin. Familial. Familiar. But also I kinda don’t give a fuck what you’re doing. I’d even go as far as to say that she finds Ryuk amusing enough to be glad to see him. But beyond that??? If he was a human she wouldn't die for him. Though if he was human she might laugh if he did.

Neither affirmation nor denial that there were more than two Death Notes, yet Nate’s suspicion increased by 0.2 percent. He had no indication of whether the Shinigami was in league with Kira, although it would be foolish to discount such a hypothesis. The Death Notes had to have been brought to Earth, and so the fact that Shinigami stuck close to the holders of the notebooks only lead him to draw the conclusion that the two were connected.
Further, the Shinigami used the phrase, ‘only the ones I have brought’ which confirmed there were at least two Death Notes, if not more – and something else too, although he had to consider that fully before making his next move. Nate checked the weight of the dice in his hand, even and perfectly balanced, before adding it to the stack he was slowly building in a mirror of the pieces coming together in his mind. It wouldn’t do to let emotion cloud his judgement, frustration and impatience would only act as barriers to the answers held in front of him.
Toys were logical. They were constructed to serve a purpose, and when put together properly, executed their purpose without flaw. They embodied perfection and stillness, and through tinkering with them, he kept his mind calm and his thoughts from straying.
“I see.” Another dice was added to the stack. “So you can only inform me of the Notes you brought yourself.” Three more dice fell into place, thoughtful eyes surveying the scene. “Then tell me, is it usual for a Shinigami to carry more than one?”
It was not usual, no. But that’s not really the question he’s asking, is it? He’s asking if each shinigami on this earth has their own deathnote in conjunction to the one they dropped. She’s quiet for a long moment, pondering which question to answer. Would either one help this child catch Kira? To catch Light? If only Misa had outgrown her fascination of him..... Perhaps, with time. Perhaps if she actually got to spend time with him... But how is she supposed to arrange for Light to stay with Misa? That would be the only way, wouldn’t it?
That was another thought, though. Another day. Perhaps. Unless she could be clever and force it somehow but... Light was slippery. She decides to answer the true question.
“It would make for a very foolish individual to present the human world with a book at the cost of his only one. But perhaps, accidents can occur.”
shrugami:
“Eh? An apple?” Ryuk perked up immediately, and his teeth bared themselves as his lips split into a wide grin. “Why are you asking me like you aren’t one too, huh Rem? The human world is rubbing off on you.” Somehow, that sounded less teasing - and almost like a warning.
“I’ll do it again - probably. Might pick a guy next time, too! Been awhile for that - I’m sure Light will appreciate appearing more open minded!” Ryuk’s laughter rang out, and he could feel the glare being leveled at him as Light looked up in his periphery. The boy hadn’t heard him - but no doubt, he was not appreciating this current investigation.
Ryuk laughed even harder.
“Perhaps...”
Though it was even something tht she could admit, the human world was more lively than the shinigami realm. It was... perhaps... Nice to be somewhere that wasn’t watching dry old bones rattling around. Perhaps that’s why she too, just like Gelous, fell in love with a human. She fell in love with the human and her world.
“That would increase Misa’s suspicion of Light at any rate. Something I’m sure he would be pleased with.”
shrugami:
“Mmm? Really….” Now that was unexpected - he doubted it would work quite so well, but he supposed if that was how Rem wanted to play it, there was no point in him interfering any further. “I hope I’m there to see it all play out,” He admitted, his voice taking on a lighter cadence at the mere thought of watching Light try to wiggle his way out of this one.
There was no denying he was smarter than Misa by Ryuk’s estimation, but emotions could blind a human to logic so swiftly it was astonishing to witness and observe. They were such fiery creatures when they were poked just the right way. It was what made them so fun!
She had another reason for denying to be involved. If she’s found out, then Misa wouldn’t trust her. Misa might yell at her instead. No.... It was better for Ryuk and Light to take the blame for this one. A slight smile folds her lips up again.
“However... If you did decide to do this again, I’d offer you an apple to delete your pictures the next time around. Isn’t that how we shinigami work? Offer bets and bribes for something of value?”
shrugami:
Pleasure lanced through him, minute yet inescapably clear, at the sight of positive emotion pulling at Rem’s features, however slight. Her disposition was worse than their kin, worse than he’d seen in a long time. Ryuk wasn’t invested in caring - but even he felt something when another shinigami faded. Rem was playing a dangerous game of her own though - and he could respect that, as one who enjoyed making the rules as he went along.
“It could be good for you,” He pointed out in a sibilant tone, lightly encouraging Rem to make the most of this. “Humans value loyalty after all,” He laughed then, not bothering to restrain it, “If that photo disappears - he’ll have an even harder time proving it wasn’t him,” The offer was implicit, but he said nothing more, curious to see what lengths Rem would take for her human.
That certainly was... An idea. But she decides to discount it. Unlike Ryuk, she had no love for human technology. Perhaps she would even end up deleting all of the evidence and then they would be back at square one. Misa would be sweet talked over and she would continue in Light’s favor. No...
“She would have as much chance assuming it’s his, as much as it is yours. I am almost positive she hasn’t had the chance to compare them. Obviously she might decide it is yours. It does look like you after all, but I am not one to speak to a human’s imagination.”
shrugami:
The prolonged stare has his lips curling upwards, silent laughter echoing between them as he tilted his head and gazed at Light, who was desperately trying not to react to the fact that thanks to Ryuk, he was being questioned on a girl he had never even met - but whom he had apparently been quite intimate with, if the content of their texts was anything to go by. The only point of confusion being his apparently empty bed, and a strange series of answers.
He had to hand it to the kid; his eyes had barely widened, but he’d definitely been aware of the full content of the photo. “You don’t think it’s funny?” He asked, leaning his head back and stretching his arms above his head languidly, “How will he talk his way out of this, I wonder?”
The corners of her purple lips twitch upwards ever so slightly but she’ll be damned if she lets Ryuk see her laughing at this vulgar display. Especially at this vulgar display. Her lips fall back down into their neutral frown, watching the ongoing back and forth between Light and the investigators.
“I will grant that perhaps it could have it’s value.... And I perhaps am looking forward to seeing the conversation that Light will have with Misa. She will not be happy to hear was allegedly he did... Even if it was just you causing trouble.”
@shrugami from X
She can only stare at him for that answer. She had known that was the answer that he would have given her, boredom, but the fact he felt the need to clarify that he wasn’t the one that killed her.... She had only asked because it was... somewhat of a surprise when the investigation showed up with that particular picture, one that only she could see apparently.
“I see. You have a very strange sense of humor, Ryuk. But I am sure that you know that.”
"Shinigami. How many note books are currently on Earth?" Nate had been staring at her silently for the better part of an hour, hair lightly twisting between his fingertips.
Misa. She had remembered the name of L Lawliet. Even as she was turning to go write his name, L had collapsed before them. It occurred to her that she should write the name of Watari as well in her book, just in case, but.... Those puppy eyes of Matsuda were on her even as everyone rushed to L’s side. As soon as she tried to leave, he yelped, and so she always had someone with her.
This was definitely not what Light was planning. And yet she couldn’t help but feel proud of Misa, that girl being more than Light could have expected. She doesn’t know how it would have gone down if she had written Watari’s name, but now there is this pale boy, sitting and tinkering away wih his puzzles and his dice and his toys. She had long since tuned him out, staring quietly out at nothing.
At the sound of his voice, she turns, gazing at him quietly before putting her voice to words.
“I know not. I only know of the ones that I have brought with me. All the others are in the hands of the shinigami that did or did not bring them. You would have to ask them, and yet it is unlikely you will ever have the chance.”
Light: In your opinion, what is the height of stupidity?
L: Hey Matsuda, how tall are you?
