“Carpe Diem” is a Latin phrase that translates into “seize the day”. It is such a powerful phrase - I believe it has anti-anxiety, anti-depression and anti-procrastination qualities. I know these are three issues that many of us in The Sandwich Generation face, whether frequently or occasionally. I would like to peel back the layers and explore that multi-pronged belief throughout this post.
Let’s start with a simple exercise; let’s be mindful. Think about a person that matters highly to you. Imagine there was a way to improve your relationship with that person, but it had to be done today. Would you use today, even if you had to push yourself, or would you wait for “someday”?
I once read that 30 years from now (when we are in The Silver Generation) we will look back and wish we could do the things we are mentally and physically capable of doing today. Personally, I want to channel that concept into productivity and experiences I can be proud of and look back on fondly.
Let’s seize the day today, not someday, friends! I know we can’t do all the following examples at once, that would be overwhelming. However, what one or two things can you do to seize the day? Let’s look at some ways together!
It’s always a good time to spend time with people that matter, it’s as simple as that. Take a mental look at your relationships this week. Perhaps there is a friend or family member worth reconnecting with. Maybe there is someone that deserves an apology. It could even be as simple as saying “I love you” to someone that hasn’t heard it recently. Even if you are in a good place with your relationships, pick up the phone and reach out to who matters! It feels good when someone else initiates the plans, doesn’t it? Take the first step!
It doesn’t have to be New Year’s Day to start a fitness program. Heck, it doesn’t even need to be a Monday. Every day is a new day. You don’t need a perfect plan; you just need to take that first step (literally). For a look at my workout plan, please see my previous post, 49 Forever, from 4/27/26.
“Carpe Diem”, in my interpretation, is not a call for reckless spontaneity. For me, the phrase pulls me away from “what if” worrying about the future and pushes me toward the present moment. When my present moment includes exercise, it reduces my rumination and lowers my stress and anxiety. Movement is therapeutic!
Try the thing. Take the trip. Start the project.
As mentioned in the post, Yo Quiero Continuar Aprendiendo on 4/17/26, I started learning Spanish on an app about four months ago. I have been practicing every day, even if only for 5 minutes. I have a desire to expand my Spanish learning with an additional tool but haven’t got myself there yet. I also have a desire to start some drawing and painting again, but I think between this blog and Spanish, it will have to wait for now.
Hobbies can be anti-depressive by engaging in a meaningful activity that day and providing a rewarding sense of accomplishment. Consider a low-key way you could engage in an interest when you have feelings of low motivation. I know I feel better when I can look back on a daily accomplishment, even if small.
A new experience I would like to explore is European travel. I have a few trips in mind, paired with Heidi’s interests as well. I think it will be a good expansion of our travels. We have been to 40+ states, Canada, and Mexico. It feels time to cross the pond soon!
This feels like a good segue from the travel discussion above. Heidi has a fear of flying, but does fly, and obviously will need to travel to Europe. All of us need to remember that it’s ok to step outside of our comfort zone occasionally. I have mentioned previously that I have medical anxiety, which I still grapple with currently. When I step out of the situation and look in, I can often see the fear is unfounded. Remembering to breathe so I don’t spiral is key, as is leaning on your support system!
Moving on to courage, consider something you have wanted to try but felt you have lacked the courage to begin. Be brave enough to begin before you feel ready. Take the risk.
I can assure you when I started this blog, I needed a boost of confidence to begin. I sent my first two blog posts to close friends to see if “they were good”. I received positive feedback and it gave me the courage to publish them without any writing background or formal training. Instead, my strength here is speaking my truth. Speak yours, friends!
Do you have an example of a moment you seized the day? What from this post could you seize? Please comment below.
