Restaurant Confidential Blog

I just found this blog called Restaurant Confidential and I’m really enjoying it. It’s written by a restaurant manager named Daniel Golio who has been in the industry for over 20 years, and he knows his stuff. The blog is full of interesting stories and anecdotes about the challenges faced by restaurant owners and managers. It’s like getting a behind-the-scenes look at a world that is usually hidden from customers. Definitely worth a read if you like restaurants!

Horn & Hardart Automat at West 57th Street near Sixth Avenue, March, 1957. Horn & Hardart opened the first automat in Times Square on July 2, 1912. They took the concept from a successful German restaurant. By the mid-20th century, there were over 50 Horn & Hardart restaurants in New York, serving 350,000 customers a day.

At the time the Port authority was a dirty, dangerous place. I mean it was a breeding ground of pimps, prostitutes, pickpockets, and drug addicts.

I remember one morning I am working the counter and these two women, obviously prostitutes say to me that they will give me a BJ for a couple of hot dogs.

I look at my employee standing next to me, and he gives me the nod to take them into the walk-in refrigerator. I shake my head and say” That’s not my thing.”

I told them thanks but no thanks and gave the two prostitutes a hot dog each and told them not to come back.

The Port Authority on 42nd street and 8th avenue was a nasty place to work. One day an old woman is walking towards the #2 train and a guy grabs her handbag and darts for the stairs, just then, a homeless man who was sleeping in the corner not too far from my unit jumps up.

“Police”, he yells, exposes his shield, and shoots his 45-caliber pistol twice at the fleeing purse snatcher.

Just then, two other undercover police officers jump up and grab the guy. I mean it was like this almost all the time. Pimps would hunt for naive girls just arriving from busses coming from the Midwest, drugs were sold in plain view and crime was rampant in bellows of the Port Authority Bus Terminal . . . .

The Nedick's chain was founded by Robert T. Neely, a real estate investor, and Orville A. Dickinson. The original Nedick's stand opened in a hotel storefront at the Bartholdi Hotel in 1913.  In the 1970’s the company was purchased by the Ogden Corporation of Manhattan.

I landed a job as the breakfast cook with Nedick’s foodservice who at the time was known for its signature orange drink and Sabrett® hot dogs, with a unique mustard relish in a toasted bun.

Nedick’s operated full-service coffee shops and multi-unit operations in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City as well as Penn and Grand Central stations. . . .
