Good Thanks
This Australian restaurant features Brooklyn Essences lemon soap. It is naturally scented with a thick lather, clean rinse, and a remarkably pleasant scent. The infrared sensor on the faucet, which dispenses immediately hot water, facilitates an excellent handwashing experience. Highly recommended!
Butte
Town and Branch-branded frankincense and myrrh has a subtle, rich, and pleasant fragrance that persists even after a clean rinse. While the soaping action was not superb, the soap cleaned my hands quickly and rinsed away easily, leaving only a pleasant scent in its wake. Highly recommended.
Miss Lilly’s
Unscented, with poor foaming and resistant to rinse, this soaping choice represents a veritable trifecta of disappointment. The oily residue persisted even after thirty seconds of rinse. Coupled with the single-ply paper options, this is a restaurant that severely undervalues the restroom experience of its diners. Come for the amazing food; powder your nose at home.
Morristown Diner
Creamy, citrusy, and pearled, this globular soap leads with a strong, pleasing scent and rinses cleanly. It lacks emulsification and the foam is disappointing without extra agitation. Perhaps better classified an eau de cologne than a soap, I rate this effort as mediocre.
Newyorktitlan
Many restaurants with high volume soaping operations opt for Soft Soap, a low-cost, low-quality mainstay. For restaurants unable or unwilling to bear the negligible expense of Soft Soap, there is Lucky. This subpar emulsifant was labeled “Aquamarine,” which of course is not a scent. It smelled of fruit without portfolio, a la Skittles. Mediocre sudsing, oily after a thorough rinse. This is a garbage selection, not recommended.
Mochiron
A few observations about Zettagel: first, the dispenser launched the gel across the length of the sink, onto the front of my shirt and jeans. This is a suboptimal experience. Second, it is not soap; it is hand sanitizer. When placed on wet hands, it does not lather. It congeals. Zero out of five, I do not recommend this restroom soap.
Quarantine Edition
The restroom in my Queens apartment features artisanal bar soap made by a small producer, Scent Works, that has been out of business for several years; we remain in supply due to a private arrangement with the former owner/crafter. While the individual bars are featured in rotation, we presently offer a bonsai bar made with raw silk, improving lather, and a lapis and gold-flecked neroli and sandalwood bar. The latter is truly bespoke, and is the only such bar released from the manufacturer.
Stay safe inside, and keep washing your hands!
Speedy Romeo
Unscented, non-foaming, entirely ineffective. I had to check my hands twice to make sure soap had actually been dispensed from the filthy, rusted dispenser on the wall. Indeed, it had; it was just a terrible, reckless excuse for soap. Not recommended.
Ghenet
Almond soft soap is a solid choice for most cuisines, and this Ethiopian restaurant in Gowanus is no exception. A clean rinse, a solid foam, and a creamy, textured hand-feel is an excellent way to wash after injera. Highly recommended.
Lokanta
Lokanta, a Turkish restaurant in Astoria, features gel soap every bit as fragrant and pleasant as it’s entrees. Gently emulsified, with small lather and a clean rinse, this soap was dispensed in a perfect bead that more than adequately covered both hands. Highly recommended.
Clover Club
The bottle was labeled, in handwritten, messy print, “grapefruit and thyme.” In truth, the pump-action bottle provided a generous portion of grapefruit goo that had no soaping properties, including a lack of foam, emulsification, or cleansing action. Not recommended.
Thirsty Koala
This Astoria brunch establishment offers an authentic Australian dining experience. In its restroom, I learned that Australia evidently rations its soap- seven pumps off the wall-mounted dispenser yielded a paltry globule of creamy emulsifant that brought no foam, no scent, and no apparent cleanliness to my skin. It washed clean, the unsatisfying goop racing with embarrassment off my hands and down the drain. End the war, Australia, and stop rationing your soap. Not recommended.
Crescent and Vine
Dial Gold was, is, and shall eternally remain a subpar, phoned-in facsimile of decent soap. All color and no foam, chemically scented with a nod towards citrus, this is not a soaping option a legitimate bar should entertain. Poor showing.
Pasticceria Ferrara
Scentless, and propelled a great distance by a faulty projector, this soap was a chemical weapon. Astringent, high volume, and spurted upon my sweater and jeans. Rinsed clean (from the hands, at least), but the smell was not appealing.
I’ve been hard on Softsoap in previous posts; most of their varieties fall wihin the broader spectrum of “fine, I guess” soaping options. But I’ll admit, the lavender and chamomile appellation featured at this classy upper west side cafe was a well-balanced delight.
Ayza Wine and Chocolate Bar
The restroom of this fine establishment set an excellent tone from the start, with floral fragrant scents the moment the door opened. Imagine my disappointment to find the soap dispenser- a buffed metallic pump-action mode- blurting our gobs of tacky, gooey emulsifant that smelled of fake florals. At first, my nose attempted to transpose the lovely fragrance of the air on this sorry excuse for soap, but as it did not cleanly rinse, I left to find my hands a sticky, fake-smelling relic from a disappointing soap experience.
Trattoria Bianca
This fine dining establishment near Penn Station features two soap dispensers: a motion detector built-in, which was non-responsive, and a pump-action contraption, which deposited a generous and over-adequate amount of cream colored goop into my palm. The soap did not foam, but rinsed cleanly and left a superlative, floral scent on my hands. Overall recommended.
