mulder fascinates me for so many reasons but one of them is his genuine interest in/fondness toward the idea of aliens while he firmly believes that they are what took his sister. he has every reason to think that aliens are Pure Evil Sent to Destroy Us but instead he approaches the topic of extraterrestrial life with interest and nuance and even enjoys things like silly alien-shaped mugs and area 51 merchandise. personally if i thought aliens took my sister i would be really pissed off at seeing alien bumper stickers treated as quirky souvenirs, but to him, part of wanting to believe means believing in good and bad and the possibility for each individual, human or not, to choose, and that's what makes the search for answers different than a revenge quest.

can you say more about the saw trap? i’m so curious

they made that movie so much faster than it should be possible to make a movie. they had 10 weeks of preproduction when a big effects-heavy movie like that would ideally have about eight months, according to this book (jody duncan's the making of the x-files: fight the future). the crew was mostly new to the x-files, since the regular crew was still filming season 4 during preproduction, so they didn't have a shorthand with each other. they'd never made an x-file before. and then the shooting schedule was so rushed that david duchovny and gillian anderson were filming six days a week, on their "break" between filming two full seasons of television. not having much prep time meant rob bowman and company were sometimes figuring things out on the fly while filming (like how shots would be blocked in the spaceship set), which also affected which shots the special effects team would have to finish in post. this is on top of normal stuff like heat, wind, dust, gillian anderson having an allergic reaction to sunscreen, corn leaves slicing up her eyes. I'm not getting into whatever the deal was between david and gillian on a personal level in '97 because it's not my business and it's not even alluded to in the book, but there's also whatever that was <3

anyway two final fun facts. (1) the art director and set construction team got stuck on a glacier overnight right before filming started because the weather turned and they couldn't fly out, so they just finished building the outdoor research station set and slept in it. "ice" (1993) is real. (2) there's an anecdote about chris carter on location in the desert carrying around a book called introducing kafka but never having time to read it. which sounds like a bit.

The key to writing good fanfiction is to harbor a deeply humiliating desire, and the trick there is that even pretty basic and societally-accepted desires like “being held” and “being wanted” CAN and WILL be humiliating if they’re intense enough. Become so estranged from human connection that the idea of someone playing with your hair fills you with yearning so deep you feel like you’re going to throw up and you will write some banger fanfiction. It might have some other consequences too but idrk about that.

X(-Files) and Os

Os - Mulder and Scully are epic huggers. Scully throwing herself half dressed into his arms in the pilot, and his surprise and then acceptance? Scully finally opening up and letting herself cry in his arms at the end of Irresistible and how much he needs to hold her too? Scully folding herself over Mulder in Demons as he crouches on the floor after drilling holes in his head on a suicide mission to find answers before it’s too late and Scully is gone? The FTF hallway scene - you’ve kept me honest, you’ve made me a whole person??? Mulder using baseball as an excuse to put his arms around her in The Unnatural - in a very rare moment of lightheartedness and joy? Scully wrapping herself around him again in another moment of despair at his mother’s death in Sein und Zeit? Mulder tucking her into bed in Requiem and wrapping himself around her and telling her what he felt watching her hold that baby? The way they wrap around each other - and nuzzle! noses! - on the motel bed at the end of The Truth, left with nothing but each other, and maybe that’s enough?? I have nothing profound to say, just that they love each other.

Xs - But what - truly what - did txf production team have against light? Game of Thrones watchers thought they had it bad with that night battle? Try waiting through 5 seasons and an epic bee-block for Mulder to kiss (well, a 1939 version of) Scully in Triangle and to be able to tell that it’s hot, but to see almost nothing! Just shadow! Even my favorite kiss - the jail cell reunion kiss in The Truth with Skinner hovering awkwardly in the background - suffers from this show’s commitment to its dark, spooky aesthetic. Because it’s the little details that I can see that I love so much - their thumbs each caressing each other’s cheeks, the way they don’t want to let go - and I want to see it all. The forehead kisses though, they can never take those away from us.

And I’m still salty that they never kissed in the revival!

* I didn’t include any cut scenes, extra takes, etc. since they aren’t part of the episode, but just know that I have lost minutes - hours - days - of my life watching the FTF outtakes, thank you GA and DD 😘

I know this is probably a controversial take, but Never Again is an absolute masterpiece. And I don’t necessarily mean within the context of the X-Files. I mean in the context of television as a whole. Not necessarily the monster of the week aspect of it? But in the examination of a relationship. It cracked their maladjustments as both individuals and as a partnership wide open. Put them on display. And instead of wrapping it up with a big shiny bow as a lot of television shows especially during that time would have done it left us with a gaping silence. With no real resolution and no real way through or out. I almost feel that without her cataclysmic cancer diagnosis that phase in their partnership would’ve been the beginning of the end. And rightly so.
