Lost in Translation
Occasionally in DoTU you get exchanges and lines of dialogue that donāt make a whole lot of sense. This was partly due the difficulty of getting the English dialogue to match up with Ā the characterās lip flaps and the process WEP used to achieve this. Back in January of 2004, Neil Ross, the voice actor of Keith and Pidge, did a chat where he answered a question about dubbing the show:
Question: When you worked on voltron, did you have any problems trying to match the characters lip-movements while still sticking to the script?
Neil Ross: stand by for long answer.
Neil Ross: Hereās how we did Voltron. The producti8on people would time the lip movements and we would have that much time to do the line. We were allowed to be a tenth of a second long or short - no more. Every line had a time beside it in seconds. It must be easier to express an idea in Japanese. We were always having lines that were too long and trying to figure out some way to cut them down to fir and still make sense. Then there are some cultural concepts that just donnāt translate at all. So weād just make up some philosophical gibberish to fill in.
So, yeah, that would explain some of the weird lines we got in DoTU.
But the changes with the dialogue, characterās personalities, and, in some cases, the plot of the episode from GoLion led to character interactions that just made zero sense. An example of this that sticks out in my mind occurs in the episode āBad Birthday Party.ā A slave boy named Jai escapes to Arus from his homeworld of Nemon, whose people are enslaved by Zarkon, to plead for the Voltron Forceās help. The team quickly agrees to aid Jai, with Keith announcing āIf he needs our help, heās got it! Right, team?ā The VF then head down chutes that leading them to a room containing shuttles that take them to their individual lions. Before hopping into the shuttles, Keith asks his teammates if theyāre ready go. Lance responds to this innocent question byĀ attempting to punch Keith.
