Hi Reverend Krissy, can I ask your opinion on something? When I pray, and I'm thanking God for the day I've been given, for the people in my life, my animals, I begin to worry that I'm being self centered in my prayer for only considering things that affect me personally. How can I do better?

Noelle,
This is a great question! The biblical record is mixed on this. The psalms are prayers meant to be sung or chanted; many of the ones that arenāt pure āGod is so awesomeā praise songs are like, āWTH God, my life is crappy and you need to fix it!ā Or āOur enemies hate you, help us wipe them out in this warā¦ā
But then Jesus teaches us to pray asking for what we need for today, Godās will, and justice. Oh, and for our enemies.
Paul wrote to the churches in his time that they should pray for their political leaders and other asshats!
This song by my friend Rev. Bryan Sirchio has pretty good advice: https://open.spotify.com/track/2vADTg4lapPxDIEKJAh4vK?si=9jf9U7r3QkWyTiBAmiRusA
Me, I always have a list of folks who have asked for prayers; plus all the places where there isnāt justice or peace; plus the environment that we just keep destroying; plus all the people who need food, shelter, love, etc..
One of the great Christian mystics, Meister Eckhart, said that when praying āa single, heartfelt "thank you" is enough.ā
God can handle whatever you pray because they are a great big God and they understand that we are limited beings. God loves you no matter what!!
Peace,
Pastor Krissy Kate
