despite alain having like no problems talking to people and whatnot, he tends to gravitate towards spending his time by himself since that’s what he’s used to. its less about him not wanting to connect with others but more so not being used to seeking out the company of others since he’s always been super independent since he was young. like it’ll get lonely from time to time but its never usually a big deal for him since he’s accustomed to it but ultimately, he’s just super awkward about this kind of thing. he will get somewhat bashful when someone openly calls him a friend.

“ YOU there, do you perhaps have any younger siblings, a little brother perhaps ? Do you think that any of your family members would be interested in a little bit of magic ? Or perhaps even yourself ? This would make the perfect gift to cast the sweetest dreams over them ! ” Perhaps in any other situation, this would seem like Alain was some sort of swindler but in Mondstadt at least, he had quite sincere and amazing customer reviews and with him standing in front of his shop, promoting some magic dust ? There was no reason to doubt him in the slightest.
Normally, the witch wouldn’t promote his shop out in the open like this when he was about to close but the plan here was to get rid of some old products and luckily enough, there was a foreigner here who probably never encountered such a thing ! He could truly care less of he was a member of the Fatui since it would be rude to discriminate.

Well, that didn’t go as planned. Of course, Blue Bird would have figured that two anemo users against anemo slimes wouldn’t prove to be fruitful- and yet there they were squeezing the water out of their outfits while the anemo slimes simply glided away off elsewhere.
A shame, really. Blue Bird was sure they both had it- but because of how long it took, both their clothes AND what materials they could obtain were very much soaked and unusable. Ah… they were going to have to go back out and find them again to make up for the lack in materials for the crafting they both will have to do later.
“Hey, don’t sweat it. It was my bad that I thought we could handle them together, but at least now we know a way around them when we find them again! It’s not like there are limited supply of these things, either.”
A friendly laugh and Blue Bird had already begun to gather his stuff.
“We can worry about the slimes another day, those ones are not as important. Before we leave for the night though I would like to check out this one sight with you, if you’re ok with that?”
“ ... NOTE to self, avoid any slimes by the water so that they don’t end up ruining everything. ” Even without falling into the water, slime mucus certainly wasn’t the most pleasant substance to have on anything so the materials were ruined regardless of the water damage. He sighed and forced himself off his rear to begin gathering up materials as well.
“ Well, there’s always another day so I guess it isn’t that much of a bummer. I’ll see what I can salvage when I get back. ” He might as well take another day off tomorrow to collect some materials again since he was actually running low on some things. He wondered if he could convince Blue Bird to come with him again tomorrow. “ Huh ? Oh uh, sure. I’m not really in a rush to get back so might as well. What did you want to see anyways ? ” He couldn’t exactly imagine what it is that Blue Bird wanted to see right before night fell but it must be quite an interesting sight if the knight wanted to check it out with the witch.
Before they made off, Alain summoned a gust of wind to make sure his clothes were dry enough to the point that it wasn’t uncomfortable to walk in and well, that seemed to be enough. It was still somewhat damp but it was tolerable. “ Well, I guess I’m ready to go. I don’t know where you want to go so lead the way. ”

A small laugh escaped Nix but it was cut short by a wince as she slowly got back onto her feet. “I’ve had worse than this so it doesn’t quite hurt as much..” That didn’t mean the tumble she took out of the tree didn’t hurt at all though. At least she didn’t hit her head this time, that was the best she could’ve hoped for. Though ll that trouble to get a few apples, which were now scattered on the ground. “You don’t need to waste any supplies on me, Sir.” Wait, where those his belongings now on the ground? Seems her fall caused him unnecessary trouble. “But I’m sorry that you dropped your basket.. Let me pick those up for you!”
“ YOU’VE experienced worse than this ?! ” Even though he barely just met her, Alain couldn’t help but worry about the sort of life she led. If she was this clumsy then how did she manage to pull through until now ? Perhaps she had the sort of airhead luck that he’s heard of. That aside, he was glad that she at least looked fine so it was nothing life-threatening in the least. “ ... It’s fine. These are just incase any emergencies happen and I can always make more of these later so don’t worry about my stuff. You don’t have any bruises or wounds or anything that to be treated, do you ? ”

‘ eh ?! you’re that popular — ? ‘ as someone who once dreamed a little of becoming someone famous , saki feels beat ! ‘ sheesh … that has to be because you’re the only one in the market … ! ‘ at least around mondstadt . there seemed to be plenty of fortune tellers in liyue , but even that region was lacking in the dream-merchant department . not to mention , alain seemed to sell his wares for cheap . ‘ i see … ‘ maybe this guy was actually kind of scary in how he did things . ‘ in that case , i’ll do my best — ! although , maybe you should try to get a little rest … you aren’t overworking yourself , are you ? ‘ what was she supposed to do if her new boss suddenly collapsed face-first onto the ground out of exhaustion or something ?! urgh , and not only that , but — ‘ i’m sorry … again … ‘ the need to apologize weighs heavy on her once more . she really thought alain would be more of a lazy guy . a slacker , not a busy-body like this !
FROM her reaction alone, it was obvious that Saki severely underestimated him to the point she felt guilty about her misunderstandings. Well, maybe at first glance one wouldn’t think Alain was anyone special but he certainly worked hard to get where he wanted today so he sure as hell wasn’t going to let her go off without telling her how it was. It was proof of his hard work after all !
“ Well, I won’t deny that my shop’s popularity is because it’s the only one in the Teyvat Market. ” Or at least to his knowledge anyways. “ A lot of witches aren’t too fond of sharing their culmination of magical knowledge with the common folk so I wanted to do something completely different from the rest. I just feel like it’s a shame to limit these kinds of things only to those with magic. ” But his reasonings aside ... “ Oh ? So you’ll help out then even after hearing all that ? Then, it’s decided ! ” He began to make off for the city gates, practically dragging her with him to begin collecting materials. “ And it’s fine. I’m used to this kind of lifestyle and I get restless if I don’t have anything to do anyways. At least having you around will help lessen the load so just worry about yourself. ”

“ I didn’t expect the both of us to be blown into the lake by those slimes ... ” Then again two Anemo Vision users against Anemo Slimes ? There was no winning unless some smacking around had to happen ... which it did but still, it didn’t change the fact that they would be sent flying either way.
He sighed in exasperation, somewhat disappointed that all his materials got ruined but ah, well ... nothing to do about it. Here they were now, sitting by a fire waiting for their clothes to dry. “ You didn’t need help with anything else, did you ? I know you wanted to take care of the slimes around here but it’s getting late ”

" THANKS for helping out, Mr. Zhongli. I usually do this all myself I’m grateful for the extra pair of hands this time around. Sorry to have you helping when you came to visit but now we finally get to catch up. ”
With the shop finally closed and cleaned up, he invited Zhongli back to his home to have some tea. “ Seriously, I never thought I’d see you again, especially in Mondstadt out of all places ... it’s been several years since, huh ? You sure look the same as ever ! So, what kind of business did you have here anyways ? ”

“ H - HEY, you alright ? I’ve never seen anyone take such a spectacular fall ... You’re lucky that I was even nearby. ” Who knew a day of harvesting ingredients would end up with a girl falling from a nearby cliff ... or tree ? He wasn’t sure where she exactly fell from but not that it was any of importance. He decided to ignore his fallen basket of materials for now as her wellbeing was more important. “ You don’t have any injuries, do you ? I’m not a doctor but I do have some things at hand ... ”

“ AH, sorry — shop is closed for the da - ... hm ? You’re ... ” What an unusual customer. He set his broom aside and made his way over to the front desk to greet him. “ Aren’t you that Fatui guy that always hangs in the Church ? So what pleasure do I owe to the Fatui ? Off-duty finally ? ” Under normal circumstances, Alain wouldn’t make any exceptions for any last-minute customers but he certainly couldn’t deny his curiosity towards the unexpected guest. “ Or you have some shady business to offer ? ” Perhaps a tasteless joke but he deserved to jest around a bit after a day’s of hard work.
alain isnt the type who seeks out validation for his hard work since hes used to doing a lot of thankless work but it always makes him especially happy when someone recognizes it unprompted ... he might even get embarrassed sometimes bc he never gets a whole lotta genuine praise. just doesnt know how to react sometimes. he tries to brush it off usually but if it gets too much ... you’ll see it when it does.

did she ?she’s made it so far picking out commissions and indulging in a little of others’ generosity — it might be nice to finally land a nice , steady job , one that might even come with a bed or at least a roof over her head . she wouldn’t have to huddle over a fire jumping at noises in the dark anymore . she wouldn’t have to blow up fish from their ponds and birds from their nests like an animal ! ‘ — I NEED IT . ‘ her voice comes out grave , but her thoughts are blissed with relief . if she could live her life picking flowers and restocking shelves for this guy and still make enough to eat … !
‘ aha … ! i mean , only if you need the help , y’know … ! ‘ don’t get carried away and start looking too desperate , saki ! ‘ it’s been hard , recently … so i’d really appreciate it ! do you harvest all this stuff out in the wild though ? somehow , i imagined somebody like you might have a secret garden tucked away somewhere … ‘
WOW. So, she was that desperate for a job ? Well, he supposed living off of commissions wasn’t exactly the most stable job, especially with the amount of adventurers that were registered with the guild and there was only so much commissions an adventurer could take in a day. He certainly wouldn’t mind considering her for an actual part-time position if all went well. Today was just simple material collection so there was no reason why things would go horribly wrong ... or at least he hoped so.
“ I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t considering on hiring some help. I wanted to wait a bit when I first started up shop but things are getting more busy than I expected so I’ll say that this is the perfect opportunity ! And no, I have to find a space for that but I don’t ever have the time for it unless I close up shop ! ” Cue pained laughter because he’s so goddamn busy.

easier said than done ! ‘ but some people really are suspicious … ! i meant what i said , you know — about watching you ! ‘ just because he could spout a few heart-touching lines and make her flush like a berry didn’t mean she was giving in to anything ! like now , if he started asking for something freaky like human hearts or cursed toes — ‘ i don’t need to collect anything weird , right ? a-and , you’re not expecting me to have everything right away either ? i’m still new to mondstadt , so it might take me a little bit to get used to my surroundings … ‘ ugh , as long as he didn’t tell her to fetch a single fragile dandelion from the most precarious peak of the highest mountain !
“ THERE you go again with your assumptions ... all I want you to do is help me out. I promise it’s nothing crazy. I'll be leading the way anyways so stop worrying. ” When did this girl not overthink everything ? He could tell this was going to get tiring quick but he had no choice but to put up with it.
“ All we’re doing is picking out some common stuff ... like dandelions, lamp grasses, valberries — stuff like that. Today just so happened to be my harvesting day so you’re lucky you don’t have to deal with anything in the shop. If you do a good enough job then maybe I can offer you a part-time job ... well, if you need it. ”

wonder creeps into her expression . she’s once said the same thing : i’m doing this because i want to ! the slightest show of gratitude or verbal thank you could make all of her efforts feel worth it . and not just as a magical girl , but a regular person too . even if the magic shop’s curator was still something of a mystery to her , the sense of saki’s understanding suddenly seems to grow . ‘ o-oh , so it’s like that … ? ‘ she snaps out of her haze . maybe she did misjudge him a little . so she doubles over in a bow . ‘ — sorry . i suddenly feel the need to apologize … ‘ of course she had her own precious dreams , but so didn’t alain , even as a dream-sharer ? ‘ i’ll try not to trample on your hard work , so … ‘ she fusses , she fidgets , she fumbles with her pointer fingers . ‘ th-thank you for taking care of me ! ‘
WHEN it all came down to it, Saki was a nice, honest girl, huh ? Well, maybe too honest but the fact that she even apologized was good enough for the witch. Still, she was an odd one, wasn’t she ?
“ Apology accepted. I’m sure you know this already but you should think twice before making assumptions about other people like that. You’ll get someone real mad one day but you’re lucky that it’s easy for me to forgive. Oh, and also ... thanks. ” While he wasn’t someone who actively sought validation for his hard work, it was nice to have someone at least recognize it. “ But let’s see ... why don’t you make it up to me by helping me out ? I could use the extra hands to collect some materials. ”
