if christopher nolan was really the visionary and ground-breaking director everyone claims he is he would have cast ben affleck as penelope
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is “I seriously hate women and minorities.” and you’ll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
Holy fuck
no no, i get it. i can see why you're confused- I want the CANON to be completely platonic, fucked-up exploration of intimacy that transcends human sexuality but never includes human sexuality.
I want to be the pervert that makes them fuck.
Saw a comment calling The Pitt "the hospital yaoi show" when the only canon queer relationship is between two women
[Felson, N. (2025) Regarding Penelope: From Character to Poetics. 2nd ed. Hellenic Studies Series 101. Washington, DC: Center for Hellenic Studies.]
The scene of their marriage bed with Odysseus' reaction is so important for Odysseus and Penelope's relationship, and functions as the perfect climax of their reunion. The plot of their relationship is incomplete without this moment.
A rehearsal for a new play
A double piece featuring Penelope, Clytemnestra and Helen 🥹❤️ cause I love them very much
I hope you like it 🙂↕️
can i be real for one second are we not all cultivating vastly intricate filtered content lists. is that just me. i see little to nothing that bothers me. i block anything that could potentially bother me. i am blocking niche tags from 3 fandoms ago for my own peace of mind. i have the name ‘bruce’ filtered
Nolan’s Odyssey:
Cut 2 of the most famous adventures for 6 minutes of fleeing the giants
Cut the Nobody scene entirely
De-hottied Circe and made her overly-emotional and reactive and falsely accuse the men of being rape threats. No nymphs or magic besides the soup.
Had the Trojan horse portrayed as a war crime so bad it ended society and was deeeefinitely the worst and most dishonorable thing done in the Trojan war (cut the rapes from the sacking of Troy while still trying to make it a symbol of lost society so they just stab a lot of women and wax esoteric??)
Slander Menelaus and Helen. :’-] he did not drag her back as his slave queen they’re literally one of like 2 endgame-still-ok Greek couples. (Speaking of weird changes in the family, they keep Agamemnon killing his daughter, but totally leave out what he did to Cassandra)
Odysseus actively doesn’t want to get home to Penelope and Telemachus
Mentor is just some guy 100% of the time instead of usually Athena.
Odysseus is neither a wife guy nor sufferer of hubris (that is not my beautiful king that is not my beautiful general)
The gods just aren’t there. They de-god Calypso and also sort of do the lotus eaters as just her (but not. It’s bad). Hermes? Gone. Poseidon? Poseidon who. Zeus? Helios? Nah. Athena? You think so but no, that’s just Odysseus and his PTSD talking to himself.
The gods aren’t there but one of the messages is to give yourself up to God’s control and to let go of trying to carve your own path? Which Odysseus does??? Confusing and off target. 0s across the board.
They cut all the humor. No naked Odysseus. Not a laugh was had.
Odysseus won’t let Telemachus help him fight the suitors bc ‘you’d be exiled’ and then runs away with Penelope at the end instead of the remotely normal ending to the book. Why? I don’t know
I can’t tell you what it’s about bc even though it was 3 hours every scene felt like the sparks notes version, but my best guess is ‘it’s ok if society collapses bc it will rise again’???
Shot like someone who didn’t go to film school made it. Scene 1 Nolan was cutting to people every time they spoke I was dying. No audio off-camera so cringe. Also insane camera movements like did we need a push in for the 0.5 second cut to a servant listening in? Was that 0.5 seconds not gripping enough? Really??? Dude what are you doing
Why was Tiresias moving like a worm in the sand
The hunting dog got more screen time and character arc than Calypso
Every woman was handled badly. Every single one. Actually Clytemnestra was fine she was there for like 15 seconds but they were ok. Otherwise though just badly handled every single time and in gods’s bizarrest ways (what if Telemachus and Penelope fought over which one of them was good for the throne. What if Calypso wasn’t holding Odysseus hostage or sacrificing her eternal happiness by letting him go. What if Circe was a crazy emotional middle aged woman who sees all men as rapists and turns them into pigs for no reason but she’s neurotic)
seriously it’s so weird to get back to Ithica without seeing Hermes, Athena, or Poseidon once — but they’re not plot relevant, right?
Odysseus is personally responsible for the fall of Greek civilization bc of the Trojan horse trick. He basically nuked civilization. (Yes all of it bc that’s the only civilization at this time. What do you mean no it’s not that’s crazy I mean I’m p sure it’s just Greece)
Cut the whole ‘only my husband would know that’ thing with Penelope and the wedding bed
Stole the exact amount of one of Jorge’s songs you legally can
Didn’t let Odysseus go full feral in the finale
Not a Greek in sight in the main cast. Just lots of Americans and other Europeans. Really bad costume design too. And set design.
Literally start ‘the Odyssey’ with Odysseus home in Ithaca already. 98% is a flashback. First version of the Odyssey ever both thematically and literally not about going home
Anyway it was dogshit don’t go see it
The Iliad is probably one of the funniest books I ever read
Like I'll be having a not-so-good day, then remember how Hector had given himself an entire pep talk to fight Achilles. He saw Achilles running full speed towards him and proceeds to just book it.
Or when Menelaus got shot by an arrow in like in an ultimately nonfatal spot, and Agamemnon begins prematurely mourning him while he's standing there like 🧍♂️” you're scaring the men.”
Or when Odysseus is walking around the camps with a royal scepter and is just beating people with it if he finds them packing or suggesting to leave.
Or when Hector is brainstorming on how to face Achilles and for a moment goes, “Maybe I could talk with him, we’re both princes, we can both be rational, I could reason with him… that's a horrible fucking idea.”
I have more, but these, in particular, really tickle me.
[Felson, N. (2025) Regarding Penelope: From Character to Poetics. 2nd ed. Hellenic Studies Series 101. Washington, DC: Center for Hellenic Studies.]
I love how this encapsulates penelope as a character, all the facets of her that is so often neglected or forgotten.
Nolan and his cast talking shit about how "Homer didn't care about women" only to Have: Helen mutilated by Menelaus, no Ino, Arete, and Nausicaa, hardly any scenes for Athena + complete butchery of her character, and Penelope's bed test being cut. Wow.
We have Nolan saying "Homer was his era's George Lucas" so no wonder nothing there looks bronze age Greek because Americans view greek myths as much or a fantasy as Star wars or marvel. No wonder Agamemnons armor looks like Darth Vader and he treats it as if he's gonna make a whole franchise out of it
And there also those people who actually have the audicity to compare Greek Mythology with comics, because they do not understand nor bother to comprehebd that you have to keep a certain amount if respect while engaging yourself not only with the og source material, but also with a whole ass religion.

if you are a parent, or may become one, or you are otherwise likely to arrive in the situation of caring for a child while they eat, promise me this: if a child doesn't like a certain food or food group, you will ask them WHY. and specifically, you will pay attention to either confirming or ruling out "it makes my mouth itch" or "it makes my stomach hurt," both of which are medically important info that children may not provide unprompted. which i know because this PSA has been brought to you by "i spent my entire childhood and much of my early teens eating peas and lentils while wondering why everyone else liked the Violently Itchy Mouth Sensation so much, like were they a bunch of legume masochists or something, before i finally realized that Violently Itchy Mouth Sensation was in fact a sinister demon appearing only to me, and her true demonic name was: Legume Allergy"
with nothing but affection and care for many of you reporting itchy mouths and "spicy" foods in the notes:
