4. There Will Be An On Screen Romance
Romance is a hallmark of the Star Wars franchise, with both Han Solo and Princess Leiaâs romance and Anakin Skywalker and PadmĂ© Amidalaâs taking center stage in the original trilogy and the prequels. While PadmĂ© wasnât exactly a strong female character, and the contrived romance between her and Anakin was arguably the bane of the prequels, J.J Abrams hopes to revitalize the power of the romance from the original trilogy.
Speaking to the French Newspaper Metro News, Abrams confirmed that romance will play a central role to the filmâs development:
âNo doubt, even if I already know I want to approach this project in a different way ⊠Weâre only in the initial stages [of making the film] and itâs difficult to talk about it other than to say itâs very exciting.â
We definitely should take this romance confirmation with a grain of salt. The article was published 1.5 years before TFA was released. At that time, Michael Arndt of âLittle Miss Sunshineâ and âToy Story 3â was slated to write the TFA script. Arndt left the project on October 24, 2013. Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams wrote TFA instead.
I also tried tracking the original aricle on MetroNews France, but found out that metronews.fr was acquired by LCI in 2016. The thing about an interview without a video is that so many things could be taken out of context. It becomes even more complicated when said interview is translated to a foreign language. Although the original French article is lost, somebody on a forum site actually copy-pasted the German translation of JJâs interview:

Nehmen wir hier als Beispiel American Werewolf von John Landis, einen Film, der gleichzeitig schön und durchgedreht ist, mit glaubhaften Figuren und Ă€uĂerst erfolgreichen Spezialeffekten. FĂŒr mich ist das die ideale Mischung. In etwa wie ein perfekter Schokoriegel.

In a nutshell, it was fun playing detective during tea breaks at work. However, it has come to a dead end. Still posting this here as a reference to review when the sequel trilogy wraps up. No more excavating old articles for now. Hopefully, after the release of âSolo,â Lucasfilm will shift the press attention back to Episode IX.
