while we’re talking about rick being racist i would like to remind you that frank zhang is a racist caricature who is asian when convenient and i will die mad about it. this post explains the east asian rep problems better than i can and i highly suggest you all read it. stan frank zhang but also acknowledge the racism embedded in his character development.

as one of the meanie boohoo fans rick riordan mentions in his tweets, let me make something very clear: the word “bullying” implies a hierarchy of power; one part being unfairly treated by the other. as normal teenagers and young adults, we do not possess the kind of power needed to compose such a hierarchy. you, an everyday person who goes to school or college or works a 9-5, do not possess rick’s wealth and influence, and odds are you will never reach such a level of power. to be very clear: it’s not possible for you, one voice in a sea of literal thousands, to bully someone with such a huge platform. when he talks about his fans “bullying” him, he’s trying to appeal to the sympathy of his (mostly young and impressionable) audience. do not let this fool you. he is not a poor grandpa being bullied by mean comments, he is a published, famous, rich author with a history of dismissing fans’ feelings and criticism because he is unequipped to deal with the fact he fucks up. that is not your problem, as a fan. it’s his. you don’t need to stop sending criticism to him because it makes him boohoo sad :( - he needs to work on his acceptance of criticism. criticism does NOT have to be nice in order to be valid. if he dismisses it because the person didn’t start with “sorry to bother but-“ and end with “not hate haha!!!!” then, again, that’s HIS problem to work on. if you dismiss entire groups of people because one of them was sort of rude to you, you are willfully ignoring the possible credible arguments of the rest because you cannot overlook the fact your ego was hurt. your hubris is not more important than the experiences of literal thousands of people who have valid reasons to have problems with your work. they aren’t bullying you when they expect you to take accountability for it - but by emotionally manipulating your audience into believing those who criticize you do it out of hatred and spite, you most certainly know that will lead to that critic part of the fans being ostracized by your more avid fans. it’s irresponsibility all around - with the lack of a proper apology, the lack of true understanding, the carelessness with which you single out a group of fans.

i will repeat it: you, a young person with opinions on the internet, are not bullying rick riordan. he is not sitting on his mansion with his net worth of 35 million dollars crying because the tweet you sent him was sorta maybe not entirely nice. he’s doing this to appeal to your empathy, to deflect responsibility and to look as good as possible when he avoids taking full accountability for the things he’s done. he may think it’s your place as a fan to applaud everything he does or else it’s hate - i personally think it’s our place as fans that we call him out this issue and others and don’t let him get away with them.
