My dear lgbt+ kids, 

Even if you wholeheartendly believe in God, you can still have doubts. 

Maybe you go through a hard time and catch yourself feeling like God left you alone. Or you turn on the news, hear about yet another disaster and wonder why God didn’t prevent it. Or you meet a religious person who is so full of hate that you struggle to feel like your religion is really such a great thing if it can lead people to act like that. 

All of these questions are so common. We often think we are the only one struggling with them because doubts are looked down upon. When we dare to express them to other religious people, they may quickly shush us with a vague “God works in mysterious ways”. We may even get told we are actively offending God by even thinking about that. That makes it easy to feel like a “good believer” never has any doubts. It can make you feel like you’re a failure in Gods eyes - which in turn may make your doubts feel even more intense and difficult to deal with. 

I can’t eliminate your doubts and answer all your questions. In fact, I don’t want to. Instead, I want to invite you to think about it this way: What if the exact opposite was true? What if God isn’t offended by your doubts - what if God is HAPPY about them?

Depending on your religious upbringing, this may seem like a radical idea to you. But look at it like this: All these questions mean that you intensely think about God. You actively work on your relationship. You don’t blindly follow, it’s not some abstract concept you don’t care enough about to even try to understand. You truly, deeply want to understand.

You truly, deeply care. 

You care about the people in this world, you care about justice, kindness and equality, that’s why you have all those questions.  

 Would God truly be offended by that? Wouldn’t it make more sense that God is proud of you?
