I talked to someone who’s Russian-American and pro-Ukraine, even has lost some family on the Ukrainian side. It was nice to see that at least some people even with that national background are decent. I wish more people were and can’t understand why most seem not to be.

There's nothing confusing about that to me, to be honest, because like I've said, it's not about ethnicity.

I know ethnic russians that have grown up in Ukraine, have Ukrainian citizenship, speak Ukrainian and are now fighting in the Ukrainian armed forces.

To me, nationality is a political thing, and as far as I'm concerned, these people are Ukrainians just as I am.

It would be stupid to think hatred was in someone's blood, man. Hatred, chauvinism and imperialism are in the brain.

And unfortunately for most russians, even those who live abroad, they're raised in them since their childhood, cultivated by the adults telling them about the "great culture", "great language" and "great country", and how everyone else just "hates great russia for being so great and pure" while completely justifying all the atrocities they've committed throughout history.

It would take a lot of work to even attempt to undo that, especially since most of them would rather die than stop being "great".

Ppl are confusing nationality and ethnicity. I am Ukrainian by nationality for example, but Chuvash by ethnicity. And once again Ukrainians don't hate russian ethnicity! And this isn't about hate/love/bigotry thing when it comes to the war/surviving and collective trauma bc of the war and long history we have with russian empire first and then with ussr as the another form of russian empire no matter how controversial that sounds. For those who are more familiar with West Colonialism try to imagine what ppl of color feel towards white ppl. Do they they hate them? Can we call their cautious and tension and reluctance to be in white ppl spaces a racism? Or mb they have a damn good reason to be suspicious/angry/frustrated when they feel something only ppl with familiar experience can understand.

Im half russian lmao and a lot of us are of mixed descent due to the soviet union moving people around by first forcefully displacing and then making them get jobs in another country basically. It would be silly to say the least

And! We need cashiers. And convenience stores. And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.

If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.

"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.

But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

My woke take is that as a person who has learned a new language fairly recently, is that reading books in a language you are learning is an amazingly useful way to expand your vocabulary, build understanding of grammar, culture, phrases, et cetera! Especially because most "easy" books still have really difficult words, so you are forced even lower

reminder that the books themselves also suck ass actually. there's an entire plotline endorsing slavery. the one character who advocates to end slavery is bullied and made fun of. the one slave who doesnt like being enslaved is bullied and treated as an outcast. the bankers are the picture of racist stereotypes of jewish people. the one asian character is named fckn Cho Chang. the worldbuilding SUCKS. fuck harry potter and fuck rowling. stop giving her your money.
