How did you etch the "you clever little bastard" without leaving a charred effect? Did you vector cut then chisel out the letters?

Certain woods engrave with less contrast than others. It depends on the resin content of the wood, among some other things. This was a piece of common pine and the wood is very soft, so there wasn't much charring at all!
