Sun Ra - The Eternal Myth Revealed 1953-1959
PT. 2 examines the influence Mary Lou Williams had on Sun Ra, his early 1950's Mary Lou Williams influenced compositions and other solo piano recordings recorded in his Chicago apartment, Sun Ra and the his assistance in shaping the early 1950's Chicago R&B Doo Wop sound including his work with R&B Doo Wop groups The Moonglows, The Flamingos and other groups, Sun Ra coaching his own R&B Doo Wop groups The Nu-Sounds and The Cosmic Rays, the 1956 Sun Ra Bebop group recorded live at Bud Land, a rare live 1958 jam session performance at the Pershing Ballroom featuring Pat Patrick-baritone sax, Gene Ammons-tenor sax, J.J. Johnson-trombone, Sun Ra-piano, Ronnie Boykins-bass and Robert Barry-drums, a feature on tenor saxophonist John Gilmore from a 1958 Bud Land performance, Sun Ra and the band in 1958 playing the pop tune “Tequila” which was recorded by the pop group The Champs that same year and closing with vocalist Hattie Randolph and take 1 (F/S) take 2 (F/S) take 3 (CT) of “Round Midnight” from the 1959 Sound Sun Pleasure recording session
Sun Ra - The Eternal Myth Revealed - 1924-1953
PT. 1 examines Sun Ra’s 1920’s Blues Vocal and 1930’s Big Band influences, his first recordings in 1946 as a piano sideman, his arrangements and compositions, Sun Ra as a singer in the late 1940’s, his trio in 1949, the late 1940’s Afro-Cuban influence of band leader Perez Prado, creating the sound that would be recognized by vocalists Laverne Baker and Joe Williams in the beginning of their careers in the early 1950's with The Red Saunders Orchestra, the coaching of The Hambone Kids who also recorded with the Red Saunders Orchestra in 1952 and and other rare facts and musically unheard inclusions.
