I have a job interview on Wednesday.. Any words of wisdom? Im FREAKING!! OUT!!!
Hey anon Congrats!! :)
I have hired literally thousands of people, so I do have some tips for you! (Though I have not been on your side of the table for a long time.)
The fact that you got an interview is a great sign! Most companies do crazy screening before this step so you can go in with some confidence that they are at least optimistic you can be a fit.
Get to know a little about the company. Check out their company website, FB and twitter. See what they are working on.
If possible - get to know more about the job you are applying for. See if they talk about it on-line - go to a store (if applicable) and talk with someone doing the job.
Spend some time practicing interview questions. You never know exactly what they are going to ask but it would probably be smart to assume they are going to ask 1.) Tell us about your background / work / school expierence. 2) Why do you want to work for X 3) What are your strengths and weaknesses
Along these lines - think about your best strength and biggest weakness that they may see about you getting the job. Assume they are going to ask about those and be ready for it. For example - perhaps you don;t have much expierence. While I would not bring that up if I were you, if they do - be ready to talk about other things you have done to get you ready.
Be honest - Don’t try to trick the interviewer, it probably won’t work and if they think you are BSing, they never will hire you. If you don;t have a specific skill - be honest. It helps if you have done your homework and know what they may ask. You could say - No, I don’t have the ABC certification, but I looked into it and X college offers a certification class starting in October. If Hired, I would enroll. <– This would really impress me!
A few things that should be obvious but I will mention because some people forget - 1) Be on time. I actually prefer to be early but wait in the parking lot so as not to be a burden. 2) Dress professionally and show good hygiene 3) Turn your phone off. 4) Bring a copy of your resume, just in case.
At the end of the day - do some homework to be ready but also, be yourself. It’s kind of like a relationship. You want to find a place that really wants you as you are today. Then, if it is a mutual connection, you will have a great future together.
Good luck! Let me know how it goes?
Great advice! I work in HR for a school district, this stuff can make all the difference.
Feeling so proud. Today has been an NSV-filled day.
A typical Friday night for me would be ordering pizza or pasta or a sub and fries, drinking bourbon, and watching tv with my husband. Don’t get me wrong. I like my pizza and I like my bourbon.
But I’m laser focused on what I need to do to be the best me, and pizza and bourbon hasn’t gotten me there so far. So I made a meal plan and instead of coming home after work, I went to the grocery store and food shopped for this weekend and the entire upcoming week. It’s all healthy, real food.
So tonight instead of pizza or pasta, we’re having some grilled chicken breast, corn on the cob, and red potatoes. Grilled food is so SO delicious. And instead of whiskey, I’m drinking water.
This is a HUUUUUGE NSV for me. HUGE.
Chilaquiles for lunch! Our whole office went out to a brunch place. I managed to resist ordering a huge plate of something like pancakes, waffles or french toast and went with something a little more reasonable that wouldn’t give me an afternoon sugar crash lol. Win!
Literally my favorite! I’ve never had it with fried egg on top, gotta try that.
