Amandla Stenberg Opens Up About Her Gender Identity

The 17-year-old, Hunger Games actor Amandla Stenberg has come out as non-binary. Stenberg - who plays Rue in the adventure film franchise – says she feels like she’s not a ‘woman’ all the time, and non-binary is a term that she feels comfortable using to describe herself. (She is using female pronouns).

Writing on Tumblr, she said she is organizing a workshop on feminism, specifically how ‘mainstream feminist movements have continuously excluded women who are not white, thin, cisgender, able-bodied and neurotypical’.

Something we are struggling with is understanding the intersection of feminism and gender identity…

We’re both people who don’t feel like “women” all the time – but we claim feminism as our movement.

Basically, we’re trying to understand the duality of being a non-binary person and a feminist. How do you claim a movement for women when you don’t always feel like one?”

I give Amandla a TON of credit for having to not only grow up in public, but grow up as a non-binary POC in a white / sexist / cisnormative society! She is young and figuring herself and society out. Jamie Shupe becomes first legally non-binary person in the US

Oregon judge granted the 52-year-old’s petition to identify as neither male nor female, a historic decision that completes Shupe’s gender transition

I’m literally sitting on my couch choked up and nearly in tears.

As a nonbinary person I’ve never felt like I had any options to legally be myself.  It got to the point where I didn’t even want to bother with changing my name.  But if this is possible for me, if my ID and passport can one day say ‘nonbinary’ instead of male or female…

In the midst of all my fear and doubt and sadness, maybe there’s still hope for me to be able to be myself.

This school has done something wonderful for its trans students

A leading private school in the UK has made a change to its uniform policy in order to make trans students feel more welcome.

Brighton College, which takes students from the age of eight, is removing gendered uniform roles, to accommodate for gender non-conforming and trans students. The school will now allow any student the option to wear a skirt, blouse and bolero or trousers, a shirt, tie and blazer.

Globally, a woman’s period is perceived as more disgusting than rape. Society deems a natural, female bodily function as vile and even punishable in different cultures. We are expected to cover up, hide, and be ashamed for an uncontrollable, anatomical expectation of our bodies. And just…why? Why have women been brainwashed to accept and adopt this misconception? It’s time we make it known that this twisted standard of women is a bloody obvious mistake. Women bleed. Get over it.
