Inspiration IV by Rhl Creations - Traditional Massai Jewelry
Massai have been using beads as adornment and these handcrafted beadwork are quite representative of their culture. They represent key points of their culture such as beauty strength tradition, marriage, warriorhood and their status, to name a few.
The piece that is the most famous is the traditional wedding collar designed with several strands of beads, which is given to a new wife by her mother and represents the tribe as a whole. The traditional wedding collar is made such that beaded strands are hanging off the collar and symbolize the number of cows that the wife will be given.
Each color bead symbolizes one part of their daily life and routine:
Red: Symbolizes bravery, strength and unity
Blue: Symbolizes energy, water and sustenance
Green: Symbolizes the territory, the land and nourishment
Orange: Symbolizes warmth, friendship, generosity and hospitality
Yellow: Symbolizes fertility and growth
White: Symbolizes purity and health
