I miss my heated rivalry x(
This is dumb to say and I know Paul loves George and misses him but it does sometimes feel like he forgets about George :/ and I do think George was a big part of his life even taking away the Beatles so it confuses me when John gets honorary mention and he doesnāt. Maybe cause Iām a George fan so to me it looks kinda meh but thatās just the vibe I get like he didnāt even write a song about George like he did with John?
No, itās not a dumb thing to say because it does feel like that sometimes and you could be forgiven for thinking that it indicates that Paul loved John more than he loved George. But I donāt think thatās true, so Iām gonna stick up for Paul a bit hereā¦Ā
Paul does talk about George, but largely (particularly in the world outside of theĀ āproperā Beatles fandom) people are still much more obsessed by the whole Lennon-McCartney thing, the McLennon. So in interviews, two things happen - first interviewers want a nice John-and-Paul story, so they will ask Paul things to make him talk about John - eg. songwriting, etc, where as Paul didnāt write songs with George. Then secondly, when Paul does say something about John (even things that heās mentioned time and time again) it gets reported widely and frequently. Quite often it will become the headline of the article - why? Because the media knows John-and-Paul stories sell.Ā
To illustrate, hereās the top news results on a Google search for Paul McCartney:Ā
Obviously, Paulās been in the spotlight a lot recently as heās busy promoting Egypt Station, but still two of the six results are John-and-Paul stories, and in the pictures at the bottom, you have John there most prominently on the left hand side and a few Beatles pictures too.Ā
Paul does mention George and talk about him too, but these stories are not picked up as often as the John ones, particularly by non-UK media outlets, who seem more interested in John and not so much about George - so they just donāt get spread around so much.Ā
Hereās a nice quote from Paul which came out around the 6th October 2018:
āI often have dreams about John or George. I often dream about people who arenāt here anymore. They tend to be very good. And itās only when you get to wake up you go, āOh yeah, it was a dream.āā
Paul mentions John and George equally here, but when you read it in newspapers stories, like this one, they concentrate far more on John and Paul again.Ā
I think also this has a lot to do with how John died, and also the fact John and Paul had a quite public feud in the years following the break up of the Beatles.Ā
As a last comment on this aspect, Paul - always a highly skilled self publicist - is aware that mentioning John in an interview can and often does have this effect, so when he has something to sell, like he does currently with his new album - he knows mentioning John (and secondarily the Beatles and George and Ringo too) it will work in his favour to help promote whatever heās selling. And it works - number one album on the US Billboard 200, his first since Tug of War in 1982.Ā
And then secondly, I wonder if Paulās also aware of something else that could be a factorā¦Ā
āThing is, thereās a lot about me and George that the public donāt know about, and I like it better that way.ā
[Paul]Ā
(This is part of a bigger quote where Paul is talking about the last time he saw George).Ā
As youāll know, George was not a fan of gossip. He didnāt offer tantalising stories about his bandmates if he could avoid it. He didnāt talk about personal things very often. And I think Paul is aware of this and because of that, and what he thinks George might not like him to talk about, it may possibly cause Paul to self-censor stories he offers about George. It doesnāt mean he loves or misses George any less, itās actually more respectful of George and what one might suppose George would want.Ā
Plus I think itās lovely that George and Paul do have this whole private shared past and memories which still exist only for them. Iām sure there is a lot that happened between Paul and George (maybe good and bad) which is not public knowledge.Ā
Finally, as for writing a song for George, well - no, he hasnāt done a song which directly addresses George in the way that Here Today does for John, but there is one song worth mentioningā¦.Ā
Friends To Go was a song written by Paul which appeared on his 2005 album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. This was the first album Paul released after George had passed away, four years earlier. Paul dedicated the song Friends To Go to George, and has said it was influenced and/or inspired by George. Paul said about the song:Ā
āTo me it just started to sound like a George Harrison song⦠I was just sat down to write and the feeling of George came over me and I just kept writing it thinking, āGeorge could have written this!ā [ā¦]Ā I just got this feeling, this is George. So it was like I was writing ā I was like George ā writing one of his songs. So I just wrote it, it just wrote itself very easily ācause it wasnāt even me writing it.ā
And to end, hereās a few things Paul has said about George beforeā¦Ā
āGeorge was always the one who brought John and me back down to earth when we were about to get too big-headed. Without George I wouldnāt be who I am today.ā
[2001]
āI have big photographs of George behind me when I do the song āSomethingā, his song, and I look at them, and itās so sad because heās not here. But itās lovely to look at those pictures and think: āGod, my mate George, isnāt he a good-looking boy?!ā You think all the things you couldnāt think when you were a kid, because the bravado aspect forbade it. I do think of them [John and George] quite a lot.ā
[2012]
āHe is really just my baby brother.ā
[2001]
āHe was my little baby brother, almost, because Iād known him that long.ā
[2008]

Patient on the Pitt: wahhh my feet hurt
Doctor: no problem sir we'll stitch you up. Get me 100ccs of lorazepam stat and intubate. Oh no, why isn't this working? His feet are still in danger!
*uncovers sheets to reveal hooves*
Other Doctor Who Is More Woke: those are his hooves you bitch. Prep 10000ml of Ketamine.
First Doctor: damn. I was wrong and it almost cost this poor patient his life.
Second Doctor: 90% of all patients are secretly horses and anti-horse bias kills thousands every year. As Doctors we need to check our prejudices, and you can read more about this on www.somepatientsarehorses.com
tale as old as time (oscar/carlos, rated m, 6k, complete)
There's a cupid on the loose at the circuit, prowling the team garages' narrow halls.
The sleeves of his McLaren hoodie are too long on him, which means they are too long on Carlos. Oscar tries not to dwell on the fact, because eventually heāll start thinking about how they match each other length for length (hah), palm to shoulder an almost perfect fit, which then gets Oscar all gooey and atrociously warm, and he canāt have that.Ā Especially not in this moment, with Carlos attempting to hold Oscarās hand discreetly using the too-long sleeves. At least one person has to keep their head screwed properly on their shoulders.
āNot subtle,ā Oscar informs him.
āWhat,ā Carlos says, but itās Carlos, so itās more like a whaaaaaat? āYouāre shy, Oscar? Donāt tell me youāre shy.ā
āIām shy.ā
āYouāre no fun if you donāt protest,ā Carlos says, still flapping his orange paw around the vicinity of Oscarās hip.
Feeling a little too indulgent, Oscar lets Carlos chase his fingers while he half-heartedly tries to escape. Halfway through play-fighting in the middle of a street like children, Carlosās palm slips out of his sleeve like a nervous squirrel and envelops the whole of Oscarās. Victory! the grin on Carlosās face says, and yep, that, among a million other things concerning Carlos, Oscarās barriers have no hope against. The joy exuding out of Carlosās pores when he stands on a podium, dragging Oscar right out of the doom symphony playing in his head on fortissimo in Qatar. The delight when he steals the last pancake out from under Oscarās nose. And the apparent pleasure Carlos gets from simply holding Oscarās hand.
Oscar allows his hand to be held, very much a conscious decision. Even to be swung around merrily.
āThis okay?ā Carlos asks.
āUh huh,ā Oscar says immediately, even though he means Obviously Not.
The Obviously Not comes in the form of a couple of blurry photos, and suspiciously nonchalant questions thrown around at testing. The ill-fitting length of Oscarās sleeves remains a lifesaver. Held up in court, no one can definitively claim if Carlosās hand was actually curled around Oscarās (it was) or not.
āI was cold,ā Carlos says, just as nonchalantly, except itās Carlos, so itās more like a cooooooooold. āOscar was very kind, eh? Lending me his hoodie.ā
āDidnāt really have a choice mate,ā Oscar says. āYou were moaning a lot.ā
Carlos opens his mouth.
āDonāt,ā Oscar quickly interrupts, āoffer a demonstration.ā
āHm,ā the journalist says, fascinated. āHm,ā Lando says. āHm,ā the rest of the paddock with two eyes says.
Even in promo snippets and the videos they film for Grill the Grid, theyāre getting a little careless with it. Who would you go to a desert island with? Who has the best hair? Whoās the best cook? Have you ever been to the house of another driver on the grid? Who?
Carlos. Carlos, I feel like thatās going to be a very popular answer, because, duh. Carlos. Yes. Carlos.
Years of PR training kick in, and Oscar begrudgingly remembers to throw in other drivers for pepper and spice. Having a singular answer to all these questions should be worrying. Itās putting all his eggs into one basket. Itās poor planning, Mark would say. But as myopic as it may be, Oscar canāt stop his teeth from forming around the vowels in Carlosās name each time.
At least it doesnāt seem to be a game heās playing alone. When theyāre apart, when Oscarās feeling a particular kind of way, lonely and dressed down, he pulls up the video where theyād sectioned the driversā faces into three, and you had to make guesses. It was clear Carlos wasnāt trying to be obvious, but he had taken one look at Oscarās lips, and knew.
Maybe it had been obvious only to Oscar. Maybe.
Eventually, the unwanted attention grates and chips away at them, and the third time heās asked Oscar wants to take the journoās head off. His skin itches with agitation. He starts to wonder if theyāve finally gone too far. He starts to wonder if thereāre clearer photos. Unwittingly, the edges of his body turn sharp. Sensitive even to the most minute of fractures in Oscarās expressions, Carlos withdraws. And continuing the cycle of misery, Oscar will resign himself to three weeks of distance before Carlos feels comfortable enough to take Oscarās hand in public again.
Carlos meets him after testingās done, orange hoodie carefully folded up and hidden under one arm.
āThank you for letting me borrow,ā Carlos says.
āI donāt need you to return it,ā Oscar says, failing spectacularly at disguising his hurt. āSince when do we return each othersā clothing?ā
āAh.ā Carlos scratches the back of his neck. āMaybe itās better. Less questions.ā
āCoward,ā Oscar mutters, and Carlos flushes red. Between the both of them, itās Carlos who is the most honest. His arm is still tight around the hoodie; he hasnāt handed it back to Oscar. As reluctant to part with it as Oscar is to receive it. Ā Back of neck scratcher, face flusher, heart on sleeve wearer.
āI meant less questions for you,ā Carlos says angrily. āYou want me to wear it to the next press conference? Then theyāll ask you, hey, and what will you say?ā
A couple of things become clear at once. First, that they canāt be protecting each other in circles. Second, that there are exceedingly few things in a racing career and even less things in a racing career mixed up with another racing career that Oscar can stand absolute on. Only that Carlos swung their hands between them, fingers interlaced, that night. And the world isnāt ending yet.
āThat I gave it to you,ā Oscar says. āWhat else? I gave it to you.ā
āFine,ā Carlos says, jerking his arm back almost violently. āItās mine. Iāll wear it when I want. Maybe now, even.ā
Oscar wants to kiss the stupid man, cameras be damned. āGood.ā
āGood.ā
āI said it first.ā
āWell.ā Carlos tugs the hoodie back on, too-long sleeves and all, and the soft part in Oscar packed with yearning cheers. āI said it better.ā
