Happening spot, huh? He might need to talk Ichiban later. Zhao knew enough that his intentions had to have been good, but that didn't always mean he liked what he was trying to achieve. The idea of trying to reach a middle ground, or make amends, with Chitose sounded like bullshit pulled from a far too optimistic children's book.
Why should he forgive a person who both drugged and stripped his boyfriend?
Why should he forgive a person who was selling them out to the people who had intended them harm, inadvertently getting two people killed?
Why the fuck should he forgive someone who ruined Ichiban's reputation and put Kiryu's status in jeopardy? There was the fallout on his side of things, too, because of the Tatara incident, but who the fuck cared about that? All that mattered to Zhao was Ichiban and Kiryu.
But, he was good at masking. It was a strategy he knew all too well, and it was what was gonna get him through that day.
"What's your spice tolerance?" Zhao asked without answering. Stuff he'd usually suggest to a newbie lined up in his mind. Wouldn't be difficult. He guessed he could get that all out for her, and could try his hardest not to imbue it with indignation in the same way he did with passion.
"...Sit. I'll get somethin' out for ya," he assured. Once he dried his hands, he put on a new set of gloves to start out on preparing Chitose's meal.
There was a part of him that itched to let himself be a little angry. With other customers in the vicinity, however, he wasn't going to to squander what reputation he already had left. Last thing he needed was to deal with that bullshit again. Whether it be shitty reviewers or people harassing his staff and himself for being associated with Ichiban, he wanted none of it. Zhao had more than enough shit to handle as it was.
➻ ❝ MY spice tolerance...? ❞ Chitose repeated, thinking of what Ichiban had told her about You Tian's spicy dishes. ❝ I guess I don't mind a step or two above Japanese spicy... ❞ She pulled out a chair per the chef's orders, fiddling with the menu when she settles. ❝ I'm between the pork pepper steak, the shrimp in chili sauce, or the mixed noodles. ❞ She sets the menu neatly aside on the table. ❝ Any recommendations between those three? Or, do you have something in mind that you're willing to test out? Ichiban told me that you always have something tasty that you're always testing out, and that you don't hold back when it comes to spice. It seems that he finds happiness in your cooking. ❞
Chitose fiddles with the bracelet she's wearing, a small smile on her face. She wasn't kidding when she had said that she was envious of Ichiban. ❝ ...Even his meals sounds so warm... ❞
There was never a decent memory in her mind of a shared family meal. From the time she was born all the way to now, she always had her meals in very meticulous ways. An appetizer, followed by soup, then the main course. A dessert was few and far between—her family didn't really enjoy desserts altogether. Even her siblings very rarely shared desserts. It was only when she had gotten accepted into Ichiban's party that she was able to enjoy that fabled "family meal" that was constantly advertised to her in commercials and dramas. It really seemed like her life was one big soap opera.
Needless to say, she felt lonely. Lonelier now that everyone had gone their separate ways; or as separate as Ichiban was willing to allow.
❝ I envy Ichiban, you know. ❞ She turns to face Zhao, a small smile gracing her face. ❝ He gets to live his life freely, and I think he seems happy without routine. ❞
Chitose looks towards the glass wall concealing the red entrance. Sometimes she wonders if Ichiban was in another adventure. If so, what was it? Would he ask her for help one day? Or maybe he'd already forgotten about her, or decided to really see she was an actual bad person.
❝ Plus, I'm sure he gets to have tasty meals with his friends all the time. ❞

" Huh? Why not? You know I don't blame you for it, right? " She'd been scared, he told himself. Anyone would have been. If their positions had been reversed, Ichiban liked to believe he would have chosen differently, but that didn't give him the right to judge Chitose for doing what she had to do. More importantly, he understood that if her identity had been revealed, the consequences would have been far worse than anything he felt in the moment. After all, they belonged to different worlds.
Anger would have been simpler, and nobody would have questioned him for it, but that didn't make it right. There had been a point in his life when being angry was the only thing he knew. It wasn't until he met Arakawa that he learned there was another way. He had worked for far too long to become someone gentler just to throw it away now.
" And you didn't ruin my life! Okay, Chi-chan? " He'd be lying if he said the day the Tatara Channel expose aired didn't feel like the whole world had collapsed around him. However, he didn't want Chitose to feel guilty over what happened. She was too young to deal with regrets. How was she supposed to navigate the consequences of her actions when she had been sheltered for most of her life?
" Only villains say things like that, and you're not a villain. You're a valuable party member, alright? " After giving her a reassuring smile, Ichiban followed her example and sat across from her, on the ground. This way, if some ghost decided to show up they could quickly warn each other about it and... do what, exactly? Fight it with their flashlights? They weren't prepared at all for that scenario. And then, Chitose had to make everything worse with her discoveries.
" R-rituals? What kind of rituals? And what's that about people vanishing? " There were many reasons why people wanted to disappear, although Ichiban didn't want to think about it. It reminded him a little too much of the guys in the yakuza who wanted to leave the family behind. And, well, they succeeded. Nobody's heard from them ever again. " You're way too calm about this whole thing. "
➻ ICHIBAN'S words struck a cord with Chitose, so much so that she could cry. She didn't remember a time when anyone had shown her mercy like this nor shown her that she can be just as valuable without her connections or her name. Chitose couldn't really say that she's experienced a valuable friendship like this one. Bowing her head, she let out a small nod and a hum to signal that she gets it—even if she still can't fully accept it yet.
Chitose looks up, a mischievous look on her eyes as she sees Ichiban's reaction. She wanted to mess with him a little bit, but in reality, it really wasn't so bad. The people of the land here were known to worship deities that would help them for plentiful harvests and other things and it was cruel of her to speak ill of a culture rich in history. ❝ From what I've seen, it's apparently not too different from Japanese culture. Standard ritual and offers were made. ❞ Chitose shrugged. She thought about sensationalizing it just because but she's learned her lesson in that department; plus, she was already creeped out just being in this abandoned house. And she could tell Ichiban was getting the shivers as well. ❝ But I won't be surprised if sacrifices happened in these lands during war times. I'm sure things like that happened all around the world way back then. Imagine though... if it happened still. ❞
She wasn't a stranger to what happened before Ichiban had showed up. There were tells of the Barracudas terrorizing the streets during late nights and of course, some of those stories would spin itself into myths—maybe just to make sure the kids weren't out and about late. But, if she didn't know better, she would have believed that the Barracudas conducted sacrifices to remain in power. And, in a way, they did but it wasn't to a god but to a madman lusting after power.
Chitose shrugged and leaned against the overnight bag she had brought, the weird angle of something protruding inside digging into her ribs slightly. ❝ Honestly, I'd show you the articles I came across this place about the missing people—because it's kind of insane—but... ❞ She waves her lit phone slightly. ❝ Surprise, surprise... a dense forest doesn't have signal. ❞
❝ All I know is the most recent one was around two years ago. I read in an article that the person was mouthing weird things. Something about having to go back to something and weird coordinates that lead back to this place. ...Maybe something here is important. ❞ Chitose gave a nervous chuckle. ❝ This kinda feels like those school field trips where they do those tests of courage that I hear about... You ever done those when you were young? ❞ Her hands fiddle with her phone, feeling a chill down her spine, as her head moves from side to side and up and down—observing where they are; reality hitting her like a ton of bricks. ❝ You don't think Tomi was telling the truth, right, Ichiban...? ❞
"Welcome in," Zhao greeted, albeit half-heartedly, as he kept much of his attention on the food in front of him. He was just about ready to take it off the heat and plate it up for his already present customer. His focus was pulled from him, however, as he heard that very recognizable voice. Shit.
What in the hell was she doing here?
"Just me today, so gimme a minute," he urged. Picking up the plate he'd gotten for the customer, he poured the contents atop it. All right... Shrimp, fried rice, greens, and beer. Everything they'd ordered. Putting the dishes on a small tray, he brought them over to the customer. The dishes were placed in front of them, and with that Zhao would head back behind the counter.
He would start cleaning up his station a bit as he finally gave Chitose his attention. Part of him was already thinking as to whether this had to have been Ichiban's doing. No way she would've known about the place otherwise, right? Not unless it was the biggest coincidence in the world, but y'know-- somehow he doubted that.
"Chitose-san, what a surprise." His voice was measured, polite, but he wouldn't look her way as he cleaned. They hadn't interacted directly since he'd nearly completely lost his cool during that phone call not long after they'd made it back to Japan. He still could barely believe it. The whole Tatara situation still boiled his blood if he thought about it for too long.
➻ CHITOSE'S breath hitched. Of all places that Ichiban had recommended her to, she didn't think she would be face-to-face with someone who she was practically a stranger to. Pursing her lips, she gave a small bow as she outweighed her options. If she were to fake that she actually went to the wrong place, there goes her chances of even reconciling and connecting with anyone in the group fully. If she stays, she would face some sort of wrath. And is that something she wanted to enjoy in her rare day off?
She doesn't know much about Zhao but from what Ichiban has told her about him, he's pretty loyal when it comes down to it; and it really showed when everything became clearer to everyone just who she truly was. Ichiban even told her that Zhao practically lost it when it was revealed that Chitose was the cause of Ichiban's life practically being ruined, and Kiryu being exposed and endangered—which she couldn't fault. Even Tomizawa was mad at her, and even bewildered with Ichiban after accepting her back so easily. Sometimes she thinks that Tomizawa is still mad at her as shown by his mannerisms. Sometimes she had caught him speaking to Ichiban in hushed tones while they were still in Hawaii; maybe he was afraid that she would come over and put the words he spoke out into the world in a sensationalized manner. Maybe in his mind, she had one trick up her sleeve—even when she had apologized publicly for her wrongdoings.
With pursed lips and shaky legs, she decided to stay and pull up a menu and a chair to check what Zhao was serving. ❝ Ah, yeah...Ichiban said that this was a pretty happenin' spot. ❞ She gave a small smile. ❝ I figured, since this was my only free time, I'd check it out and give it a go. What do you recommend for a first-timer? ❞ Her gaze flitted to Zhao, noting his cordiality.
Maybe Ichiban saw this as an opportunity for them to really hash it out and see each other eye-to-eye. And, honestly, if Chitose was serious about repenting for all her wrongs, she should face it head on. As a matter of fact, she saw this as an opportunity to begin growing personally. If she and Zhao could see each others' point of view and talk it through maybe, just maybe, she would be one step closer to repenting in some way.
And maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't be deemed as a "piece of shit daughter" like before.

➻ IT has been a busy couple of months for Chitose. The moment they had touched back down in Japan after everything was over, she didn't have time to give everybody a proper "goodbye" nor a proper "thank you". In fact, she found herself having to get picked up by her family's personal chauffeur to her father's company to begin the proper transfer of powers. It really cemented the fact that it was going to be a series of boring meetings and paperwork for her from this point on but it wasn't like she could complain. She didn't have the right to even when Ichiban sent her a group photo in Bar Rodriguez with everyone that same day to say they were thinking of her.
It was enough to keep her going, and enough to really clear her head of her true, personal mission.
Ever since she had that heart-to-heart argument with her family before facing Bryce Fairchild head on, she made it her personal mission to really repent in her own way. She messed up a lot of people's livelihoods with malicious words and by extension, her family name almost ruined the world. Tons and tons of nuclear waste to sit and rot in such a beautiful island while the ones she publicly condemned for troubled pasts fixed and worked in hiding it from the general public. It was a lot. And she promised herself that, as long as she's the new chairwoman of Fujinomiya Group, she would never have that happen again. But, it also came with a price. She didn't have much time for anything else, much less see everyone. So it was a surprise when Ichiban had texted her again—telling her that, if she had free time, she should stop by a quaint restaurant in Chinatown in Ijincho. The picture following that (though sort of blurry) was enough to convince herself to go.
And so, here she was in her rare free time walking around Ijincho's beloved Chinatown.
As she followed her GPS to You Tian, she smelled such a heavenly smell that caused her to run to the direction. Opening the red door, she was greeted with a strong smell of chili and garlic. The sizzling and chopping sound was music to her ears and reminded her of how long she had a "non-pretentious meal" and lucky her since it seemed that she had just stepped in when the lunch rush was over.
❝ Master! ❞ She calls out. ❝ What smells so good? ❞
This was such a bad idea.
The dare had been meant for her, not him, yet Ichiban knew he couldn't leave Chitose on her own in an abandoned place. He expected the other guys to follow his example and join them, but all he got in exchange was a 'good luck, you two! ' from Adachi, and a thumbs up from Nanba. He didn't dare to ask anyone else after that.
Ichiban didn't believe in ghosts. Not really. He knew that most, if not all supernatural experiences could be explained in one way or another. Even so, standing there in the dark, surrounded by shifting shadows, he found himself holding his breath. He tried not to think about his own encounter with the supernatural from years ago, back when he just got released from prison and his mind had been in a fragile state.
Yes, a fragile state. That was the explanation he'd chosen in the end, because it was the only one that made sense. How else could he explain the fact that he'd spent the entire day with a girl who, apparently, hadn't been there at all? The more time passed, the less confident he became that it had ever happened.
He let out a sigh and tried not to think of it anymore, as there was no point in dwelling on the past. Ichiban turned his attention to Chitose, tightening his grip on his flashlight and moving closer to her. " Older than me, that's for sure. " It wasn't the worst place he'd ever seen, but that didn't make the situation any better.
" So, are you planning to film anything? " He tried to change the subject to something more casual, or so he thought. Tatara Channel had been something of a taboo topic, which is why he hadn't brought it up before. " From what I've seen, it's kind of a trend now for kids to go to haunted places and film it. I know you're not posting anymore, but... I thought you might miss that kind of thing. "
➻ CHITOSE let out a small laugh at what he had said. Of course the ghosts would be older than him (hopefully). ❝ Y'know, come to think of it, I've never really been exposed to modern ghosts or haunted houses. Even kid ghosts that you hear about on media is older than even Adachi-san. ❞ She let herself laugh at her remark before falling silent, listening to what Ichiban had to say.
It's true that she misses the feeling of making videos—even more so when Tatara Channel was starting out. Tatara Channel was her baby and, before it fell into self-righteous hands, it was a place where she could escape. But now, with how things were, she wasn't quite sure if she had the right to return and rebrand as something else. Internet culture aside, people in general were volatile and hurtful. There were plenty of hate comments thrown her way when she had started out and she'd seen how many hate comments ghost commentators would have when she would come across one or two videos late at night. What if, without her Tatara Channel name, she wasn't engaging enough to keep viewership around? Plus, even with the channel name, she felt like such a huge impostor; especially now that everything was said to be a farce.
❝ Eh...I don't know. I'm not even sure if it's in the cards for me right now. I mean, it's kind of surprising that you would put the idea of making videos again. Even equally incredible that you don't harbor some kind of ill-will when I revealed to you that I basically ruined your life that way. ❞
Chitose was absolutely convinced that there was no bad bone in Ichiban's body but sometimes she wondered if he was actually good at hiding his resentment. She doesn't fault him if he did; it seemed that Ichiban, Adachi, and Nanba all had fulfilling lives after a long period of hardship and then suddenly, some rich girl with a penchant for self-righteous content just took that away. Talk about optics.
❝ Ah, I think this is a good spot to post up. ❞
She sat on the ground, looking towards an open hallway that had seen better days. It felt like she was playing one of those horror video games where she had no weapon and had to save a friend from some mysterious, ghostly entity.
❝ I looked this place up while we were on our way here. Apparently this forest is the real deal—rituals and everything. There's even stories of people going missing without a cause, too. Talk about spirited away! ❞

@starlixir wondered: ( glowing ) : one muse silently grabs the other and points to a set of glowing eyes in the dark near them
➻ CHITOSE'S the first to admit: when she doesn't know anything, she really doesn't know anything. Especially now that she's unsure of where she really is. She thought it would be fun to aimlessly walk around town alone without her teammates but as the city turned into suburban areas and finally turned into spaced out trees, she wasn't sure where she ended up in. It didn't help that her phone was close to dying and that she literally only had her two feet and a dream to keep going. Honolulu was beautiful when really explored but she fears that she had explored too much and the sun was going down. How long had she been walking anyway? It couldn't have been more than thirty minutes, can it? She had a lot on her mind to really keep track of time much less keep track of her surroundings.
The last time she felt equally nervous was when she had told Ichiban and the crew everything that had happened and who she truly was. It was a surprise how quickly Ichiban took her back in afterwards; thinking that he would be holding a grudge and she'd have to make it up one hundred times over. He was stupid to blindly trust and forgive, that's for sure—even Tomizawa had alluded to that and voiced his complaints about it. To no fault of anyone at all, by the way.
Chitose decided that it would be high time to retrace her steps back to the hideout before the group started worrying and before it was completely pitch black. Turning her heel, she attempted to walk back to where she had come from only to be grabbed so suddenly.
❝ Wha- ?! ❞
She turned around, seeing someone holding her wrist before following their pointed finger to the horizon. At first Chitose had to squint to see what she was looking for but once she saw it, she understood.
A pair of glowing eyes were looking back at her, the setting sun doing no favors in revealing who or what it was.

@patientsun wondered: ( sleepover ) : our muses have been dared to spend the night in a reportedly haunted place together // ok but ichi and chi ghost hunting would be pretty funny
➻ WHEN Tomizawa mentioned that there was supposedly a haunted old house settled in a dense forest just a little outside of Honolulu, Chitose took that as a challenge and, frankly, teased Tomizawa about staying over there all alone not realizing that he would fight back and dare her to do it herself if "she was so brave and can do it." At the time, Chitose was absolutely shocked at the thought not quite sure if she could do it all alone. The closest she had gotten to anything haunted was the Hawaiian Haunt but that was with everybody in the team—and that wasn't fair to really compare it to since the haunt was just creeps they were fighting off.
In all honesty, a forest house didn't sound too bad on paper but the last time she was in a densely packed forest, it didn't go so well. In fact, they were almost burned to death and were a man short afterwards. But she wasn't about to prove Tomizawa wrong by showing her disadvantage so she stayed silent, weighing her options on how to go about fighting back with a quick and witty quip. But Ichiban jumped in and decided that it would be fun to go ghost-hunting and that Chitose should try—even going as far as offering to go with her to the location. Of course, everyone looked at him crazy (as they always do whenever he gets up to his antics) but Chitose found it sweet that he had whimsy to want to explore Hawaii outside of its touristy affairs. However, being an opportunist, she decided to open her mouth and raise the stakes as well. If Ichiban and she were to survive a night in that old haunted house, Tomizawa would have to owe them breakfast in Cream & Berry out of his own pocket.
And so, here they were: getting left out in the front of a dilapidated house that hasn't seen the light of day in ages.
❝ How old do you think this place is...? ❞ Chitose asked, flashlight shining inside the dusty foyer of the old house as the door creaked behind them. ❝ This place looks like it was abandoned in a hurry. Do you think we'd find ghosts? ❞
Chitose looked towards Ichiban's way, a familiar mischievous glint in her eyes appearing and she wonders what fun they might come across in their stay at such a haunt.
