A big thank you to some great musicians playing for the Strongheart EP in Southampton, recorded at Conncept Productions in 2014 and raising money for Wessex Heartbeat and a new cardiac ward at Southampton General Hospital.

Bluebell Bedroom

Taken in ‘Bluebell Woods’ near Micheldever, Hampshire, I used my Chinonflex SLR with Chinon 1:1.7 55mm lens, and got the film processed and digitally converted using the 1 hour rapid service at Boots in West Quay, Southampton. I was particularly pleased with the old camera’s self timer, the top photo is my favourite :)

Which ISO film to use?

I used a 200 ISO film which is slow enough to allow me to open the iris a bit to generate some shallow depth of field even in the bright light of day (see close up shot of lavender with background washed out - something you may struggle with using a 400 ISO in daylight), but is not so slow that it struggles in shady light. (If I had used an ISO 100 I probably would have had to keep the lens fully open to get a bright enough exposure, but this would have restricted me to shallow DOF and I wouldn’t have been able to get the shot above with a fairly deep DOF that ensures a lot of the beautiful foreground and background remains in focus (don’t forget that the 1-1.7 lens is already very open and bright with a narrow DOF so I need to close the iris somewhat to achieve this)). Essentially, in these bright but shadowy conditions with a bright lens, a 200 ISO gives me best control over exposure and flexibility with depth of field.

The Strongheart Project: Ashton’s Story

The Strongheart Project is a creative fundraising initiative raising money for Wessex Heartbeat & The Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital.  Ashton is a friend of mine who has suffered a heart condition from very young, and has received support from Wessex Heartbeat to cope with his condition. I produced this video with him to promote ‘The Strongheart Project’, a four-track EP we are producing, containing songs written by Ashton to raise money for the charity.

Rock of Joy: A Hope for Uganda

Please watch this documentary I produced in the second year of my Broadcast Journalism degree about the difference a UK charity-funded school in Uganda makes to the lives of some of the poorest children in the world. The trip was a real eye opener for me.
