Blog 3: ‘Ivy League Parasites’
I was walking and shooting last week in SOMA (South of Market, SF) searching to capture a few portraits of people. With portraits its all about slipping it without the person realizing its being captured, to keep the authenticity & tell the full story. It’s not the easiest shot, this is why I love street photography. As I was crossing the street, about to call it quits, this dude on the Honda moped rolls up to the front and flashes this sign:
Camera in hand, Immediately I get into position snap a couple of portraits of him.
‘Ivy League Parasites.’
Wikipedia; - ‘Ivy League schools are generally viewed as some of the most prestigious, and are ranked among the best universities worldwide.’ Aka if you’re a kid from the town or barrio, you most likely ain’t going.
With gentrification accelerating and peaking faster than ever, college is becoming more of a luxury than a privilege. Students who solely focus on their studies due to their financial comfortability tend to progress quicker than someone who tries to squeeze in college because they have to work in order to afford to live before they can focus on their education. Thus making wealthy kids more successful in theory. Along with those ‘First World Problems’ may come a sense of entitlement. Why? Heres my theory.
Hear me out on this one, We all need a sense of struggle in order to accommodate humility. I believe your brain needs to endure a low so you can come to appreciate the highlife. For Example; A kid who grew up sheltered, spoon fed, and never had an issue with money in their life tend to be the most unsatisfied because they tend to under appreciate the accommodations they’ve been given. Kinda like the kid who complains that daddy bought them a Porsche instead of a rari. We all need that yin to our yang.
Gentrification is real, & Like Method Man said, ‘Cash Rules Everything Around Me,’ & it’s more obvious today especially with a wealthy man like Donald Trump running as president. The idea of having a misogynistic, cry baby, carrot with little hands and a blonde hairball as hair for a president who has never felt the struggle of living off of Top Ramen in a home with no electricity for 2 weeks (True Story) try to relate to the dying middle class doesn’t make sense in my book.
In conclusion , I think what this gentlemen is trying to say is,
‘Fucking Rich People’
What I take from it? If you can’t beat them, join them.
Make that money fam & remember money is easier to get than to save. Stay Blessed, Rich
The photos you take are absolutely beautiful..
Thank you young annon (:
Entry 2 - Throwback Thursday: Yosemite Milkyway Trip w ToAST
I’m starting a Throwback-Thursday segment to reflect on previous events I’ve experienced.
Lets throw it back to A couple weekends ago to my trip to Yosemite. It was planned around the new moon for a chance at shooting the milky way. If you’ve never seen the milky way in person, I highly recommend it as a bucket list item. It’s absolutely stunning! An overwhelming feeling of just being able to see the the entire galaxy and the occasional shooting star. I’m currently getting goosebumps by just thinking about it, & if you know me it takes a lot for that to happen.
Anyways, it was doooope. Accompanied by the homie ToAST, we left Friday around 4, drove 6 hours due to traffic. After almost running out of gas, we finally made it to the top of Glacier Point and started taking it all in. It was around 11 pm and I was running around like a child at a candy store. It seemed like the sky was the Las Vegas Strip with all of the flashing lights.
After collecting a fair amount of shots, We go back to my 4Runner, I rolled up a blunt, and smoked it while gazing at the stars and listening to some Ta-ku. I remember saying ‘These are the moments in my life I live for.’ After getting some energetic encouragement, we proceeded to round 2 of shooting.
I had seen ToAST had some ‘Selfie’ shots of himself & the milky way and immediately wanted mine. We came up with the coolest/sketchiest photo I’ve been a part of, & I’ve done some sketchy shit for my shots before but nothing like this.
The idea was to stand on the edge of a cliff we found and point a flashlight into the sky to simulate me lighting up the constellation of stars. I remember looking off the cliff down into the dark hazy abyss. I was legit scared but due to my elevated mindset (literally) I looked up to the sky and gave all of my trust to the galaxy that was there before me. Note: We were shooting long exposure shots so I had to stand perfectly still for 30 seconds while standing on the edge of this cliff. I took it as a moment of zen, & thanks to ToAST’s skills, this was the outcome:
After risking my life for a few Instagram likes we headed back to my car for a quick nap before Sunrise.
Woke up at the crack of dawn to catch the sunrise, & met a couple of photographers who were also there for the same experience. As we were getting ready for the sun to peak over Halfdome, we caught some dudes jumping off the cliff in squirrel suits. I caught them on video:
After that, the sun proceeded to rise and we got some dope shots. Here are some more pictures I took. Another awesome experience in the books (:
Be sure to check out ToAST on IG @ps_ToAST .
He does some beautiful work.

Another business trip from in Vegas complete. With another First Friday event, Adaven seems to be growing at a quick pace. We just dropped part of our fall collection, unfortunately we didn’t get to finish and print a couple of designs and our hats happened to get sent to the wrong address for embroidery so those weren’t complete either, but that’s okay! We’ll have them soon enough. Our next step to to finalize those missing fall items and work on a Halloween design. The grind never stops. I’m proud of my close group of friends & happy to be part of such a progressive group of dudes. Many other businesses are in the works for us and it’s only the beginning. It’s not easy conducting business from another city (I live in the Bay Area) but I’m finishing up my soul seeking and saving up for my big move back to Vegas in March. I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here and it’s been worth everything that’s happened in my life. I believe I’m truly blessed. I’m starting this blog to document moments of my life for myself and others who may be on the same route and mindset as me. Stay tuned for more posts in the future. For now be sure to check out Adaven Collective IG @AdavenCollective AdavenCollective.com Stay blessed Richie IG Rich.Visualz
