A/N: This story was my submission for the Riddikulus Fest, 2019. The prompt was âDraco trapped in a ferret body,â but instead of going the usual route, I decided to be a little more metaphorical with it.
A few disclaimers: (1) I am not a medical or psychological professional. I am not an expert on mental health issues by a long shot, but I am a believer in the power of therapy. (2) There is some pretty colorful language in this fic that, while it is pretty indicative of teenage boy bro culture, may be offensive to some people. LikeâŠeven for me, this is pretty crass. Looking up at the big screen in front of her, Fate groaned and slumped back into her desk chair. She had just spent the past ten years agonising over a couple that kept defying her â kept defying fate. It had taken her every trick in the book â calling in multiple favours, and perhaps even a teeny tiny bit of blackmailing â to get the couple where they were now. Which was no closer to falling in love than ever.
So really, she felt that it all had been a waste.
She gathered up the documents she had poured over for the past week and tossed them into the bin. And set them on fire. Fate watched as the faces of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger were devoured by the flames, blackening until they were no longer recognisable. They had put her through hell. They were lucky it was just a piece of paper with their faces on and not anythingâserious.

The moment she enters the bar in her no-nonsense shoes, hair in a tightly coiffed bun and her âThursdayâ robes, I know Iâm fucked.
Her name has been on my list for more time than I care to admit now. At first, I just thought my aim was off, but frankly, Iâve not had a miss with anyone else in an impressively long time. Iâm good. Really good.
But, here she is. Single, still. And wearing those god-awful, drab brown robes she usually reserves for Thursday, her least favorite day of the week.
She nods at the bartender and takes her seat primly as he smirks into the glass heâs drying with a rag. âAnother tonight, Granger?â
âSo it would seem.â She calls over her shoulder without looking back.
I rub my hands down my face and take a deep breath. This is getting embarrassing.
âNot expecting much success?â
She sniffs, crossing and uncrossing her legs as she leans back into her chair, eyeing the door warily. âJust not particularly excited.â
âI see that.â
She purses her lips as she stares at the door and he goes back to working.
Iâve never been particularly bad at my job before Hermione Granger. Iâm not entirely certain what is happening, but Iâve taken aim and missed more than ever before forâŠtoo long, now. After a series of terrible dating service debacles, Hermione has turned to the aid of her friends. The problem is, they seem to all have terrible taste. I know this, because before I intervened, they were involved in the most terrible of relationships themselves.

Nodding, she gulped a lot of air, before reigning her breathing in. Â âJust choked on the wine. H-Howâ no waitâ why is he moving to this place? Doesnât he own a big manor in Wiltshire? Or it that too small for his big ego?â
Padma looked a bit surprised at her vitriol. âSeems like he doesnât get along with his parents and wants to spread his wings a bit. Didnât want the mediaâs attention so heâs moving to this place. Itâs known for its privacy.â
âWhat?â Hermione asked, eyes wide.
âI know you donât read gossip rags, but his divorce has been all over them. His parents are not happy.â
Hermione gave her a look of disbelief, knowing that Padma didnât read them either.
âI donât need a Witch Weekly subscription. Sunday evening calls from Parvati are enough,â Padma said, answering her unasked question. âI know you guys didnât get along, but isnât your reaction a bit⊠excessive?â
âYesâ I mean, no! We hated each other at school.â Hermione floundered as she searched for more reasons to explain why him moving in just across the street was not a good idea.

A/N: This story was my submission for the Riddikulus Fest, 2019. The prompt was "Draco trapped in a ferret body," but instead of going the usual route, I decided to be a little more metaphorical with it.Â
A few disclaimers: (1) I am not a medical or psychological professional. I am not an expert on mental health issues by a long shot, but I am a believer in the power of therapy. (2) There is some pretty colorful language in this fic that, while it is pretty indicative of teenage boy bro culture, may be offensive to some people. Like...even for me, this is pretty crass. So, reader beware. (3) These characters are flawed. That's literally the whole point of this fic--flaws and the journey of self-improvement...with a comic twist :) So, yeah. I am well-aware they're flawed, and it was intentional.Â

Summary:Â It's debatable, but having an *actual* spirit animal is not shaping up so great for Draco. The more he tries to embark on a self-improvement journey, the more his inner ferret seems to call the shots. And it just can't seem to stay away from Hermione Granger.
Blaise cleared his throat. âWhat do you want, Malfoy?â
âI want to be friends with you lot.â

But this changed when the new term started on the first of September, when HE had arrived in his wicker, deluxe furlined cat basket, not that she had noticed how comfortable it looked, he belonged to Hermione Granger of Gryffindor house, the same house that gave her human so much trouble!
Crookshanks would strut around the corridors like he owned the place, of course she never noticed how he moved so gracefully on his large furry paws, or how his thick red fur glowed in the torch light, or how his yowling sounded like a Lions roar to her keen ears, no she did not notice, most certainly not!
