Creatures of the Ancient World: Sphinx
A Sphinx is a creature that crossed many different mythologies, the two most famous being Greek and Egyptian. Minimally Sphinxes have the head of a human and the body of a lion, although it is common to see them also with sweeping wings and the tails of Serpents. In Greek mythology they are ferocious creatures who speak in riddles and terrorize those who are not wise enough for them, most notably shown in the Greek tragedy of Oedipus Rex. In Egyptian myth, although no less powerful are seen as benevolent for the most part offering protection. The most famous of the Egyptian Sphinxes is the one at Giza who protects the Royal Tombs surrounding it.

Hiyori grinned at Azize’s renewed interest. “We are all different under the sea as different as they get on land some of us have snake tails where fish tails should be, better to strangle our prey, but I’m not one of them, I am Ningyo,” Hiyori wonders once again if it’s safe to tell Azize what that means but what was life without a little risk. “The human’s believe that Ningyo flesh is the best tasting meat in the world and that a bite could make one immortal.”
Oh, so she was a tasty fish then. Azize glanced over her again, eyes perhaps a little more… searching than before. No wonder she made Azize swear not to eat her. Well, that still held, for today at least. Then again, fish were always so slimy. Perhaps she would taste nice with lemon and fish sauce and rhubarb...
Azize swallowed, aware suddenly that their mouth was salivating. No, that would be no way to make friends.
"And do you know whether these rumours are true?" they asked, a little teasingly. "I find that humans love to make up stories; sensationalise."

❝Me? Well… I would most definitely or perhaps I am more likely, rather, to suggest that I wouldn’t say I did not do it. On the contrary, I would say something rather different, I’m sure…❞
“Sooooo you did it?” Azize asked, throwing away the drumstick bone with a flourish. “It’s bound to happen to the best of us,” they said with a shrug, making a show of licking their fingers clean. Was there nothing better than chocolate hazelnut spread and fried chicken? Hopping down off the fence, they whistled low at the sight of the carnage before them.
“Persephone’s going to be pissed someone walked through her flower garden again.” And jumped down from the fence into the newly created garden chaos, again.
So curses really did exist - and Azize … they were his. A curse meant to be born in dignified silence. Or so Hephaestus intended - but when he’d seen the sphinx blocking the doorway, their smaller silhouette acting as a barrier for those seeking to drink the rest of the day away ( not to mention demanding a willing audience for their riddles ), he knew silence wouldn’t do a damn thing to stop them from having their way. “Not even for a pal?” He raised his thick, dark brow, a palpable cloud of sarcastic humor hanging over his head - and irritation too, but it hadn’t yet reached an explosive point. “C’mon, Azize. Can’t you make an exception - just this once?” Yes? No? Probably not, but it was worth a try.
And then the riddle appeared; some useless, flowery string of words that flitted through one ear but strangely enough ignored the exit in favor of burrowing in one of the many, dark nooks of his mind. “You’re clawing at the wrong scratching post,” he groused, crossing his arms as he stared down at them with consternation. “Hell if I know … A brand, spankin’ new toolbox, maybe? Neighbors have a tendency to run off with tools they burrow.” Or so he’d read in a magazine article. Treacherous neighbors. But then, as if he just now realized he’d most likely guessed wrong, Hephaestus narrowed his eyes; a hazel that sometimes favored green, sometimes favored brown depending on his mood. "Do you still do the whole eat-people thing for giving the wrong answer?” Their form had changed, sure, but that didn’t amount to much on this island - certainly not enough to instill confidence in him; that his sphinx friend wouldn’t, in fact, chow down on him for getting the answer wrong.
If they could only hear about how he thought of them as his curse. Music to their ears! Though not as grand a symphony as him giving the wrong answer. That grin of theirs would haunt Hephaestus for days, they were sure. "Good attempt, and if I was a more forgiving sort I would accept it." A lie, no sphinx was forgiving. Besides, it was a decent attempt, not a decent answer. "You should find yourself better neighbors, but until then, come along."
Azize brushed past him, curling their finger after him. "Do you have a coin? Flip it and tell me whether its heads or tails." Heads for Loki, tails for Hermes. The best pranks were those on tricksters, and those with the help of a friend. They planned on having both of those with them tonight.
Defeat – oh, that made her pride twist and turn, Freyja’s brows furrowing as she looked the other in the eye. Who was this creature, so feline in nature? Perhaps it was that very likeness that persuaded her to go along with the stranger’s game. She didn’t even know their name. Perhaps she’d claim that for a prize, alongside her right of passing.
“.. Fine,” she said, almost grumbling as she spoke, “your second riddle. Have at it.”
From the second they saw the goddess' face contort into a glower, they knew they had her in their clutches. Pride was a woeful thing, but not for them, never for them. It was the honey they laced their trap with, made sticky and so sweet that every little fly couldn't resist to land in.
"You will always find me in the past. I can be created in the present, but the future can never taint me. What am I?"
He rolled his eyes at yet another dog pun, Alexander was used to them by now. “How unoriginal of you.” He muttered in relation to her mutt jabs. “What’s in it for me huh?” The male called back not wanting to turn around.
The best puns were overused, that's why they were used that much. "'What's in it for you' is a little fun. A little excitement." Azize paused then, a wicked grin coming across their face as they fetched something out from their pocket. A trinket, one that the wolf would recognise, as it was his. Really, he should stop leaving his kitchen window slightly ajar. Didn't he know there were inquisitive sphinx on the island? They dangled it from their fingers, sure to keep it out of his reach. "And maybe you'll win a prize."
Medeina scowled, almost flinching at the loud eating noises right behind her. By the looks of it, there were still people who managed to enjoy the view. There was a prickly thought stuck in her head to hit the box of popcorn out of their hands, but it would have raised a conflict and today was not the day she’d fancy one. “Oh I’m sure they would love to hear your thoughts. Didn’t you see the ideas and complaints box right next to the food stand?”
Azize noted the woman's distaste with a small shrug. There were people on the screens they cared about, briefly they glanced to Hephaestus, to Loki on the screens, before taking another mouthful of popcorn and crunching down as they watched some other stranger's struggles. "Make the best of a situation, isn't that what they say?" They gave another expressive shrug, tilting the box of popcorn towards her; an olive branch of sorts? "I would love to see the Wardens' nightmares, wouldn't you?"
Koshin smiled wide at the other’s flailing and he was tempted in trying to out scurry them, but before he could move they had begun speaking. His eyebrow scrunched in confusion because, of gods yeah he was horrible at these things. But with his face set in determination he decided to give his all on this task. He reached his hand in his bag trying to find any object he could rub his fingers on to help him focus. The first thing he clamped his hand on was his cellphone and his eyes widened comically. “A phone! Is it a phone?” His smile split his face as he bounced on his heels childishly.
Azize looked over him with narrowed eyes, pursed lips. "Well done," they said, perhaps a little bit upset that they had answered it correctly. They tapped their fingers to their lips, humming softly to themself. "What kind of creature are you?" they asked, tilting their head to the side. "That's not a riddle, just curiosity." He had a pull of a creature trapped in a small body to him, just like them.
“Woah…” She sighed, looking in amazement at the bracelet. “These charms are so cool. Did you just happen to find all of them?”
"Something like that," Azize said with a wave of their hand. "I just happened to walk into houses that had such wonderful things and I couldn’t stop myself, does that count?"
