Queer for the Holidays

Being home can be hard, even with the most supportive families, there tends to be a cultural divide between what’s typically discussed and valued within queer spaces vs the expectations and the norms of heteronormativity. Some of you are facing abusive families or families who’s political stances actively work against your rights. Some of you may not even have families to go home because either they or you have severed those ties. Please work extra hard on survival and give yourselves all the self care, patience, and love you can. You are loved, you are cherished, and your worth isn’t tied to your family. I have been visibly out for three years. In that time I have been followed in the mall, called a disgrace to my parents and told I’d burn in hell. I’ve had old women ask nearby store clerk, “What is it?” when referring to me. I’ve been called a fag and an abomination on the subway by a man who screamed that “Bruce” Jenner and the “lot of them” are sick in the head and confused pedophiles. I’ve had an employer say that it wasn’t appropriate for me to casually mention my relationship with my partner and coworkers openly talk about how much ‘gays’ violated God’s want and how uncomfortable they were around me. When waiting for my return flight after celebrating my anniversary with my partner, I’ve had religious pamphlets forcibly shoved in my hands. Having lived in MA and NY, I’ve been lucky with the overall political climate of where I’ve live, but this is still the America I have known, and this is an America that is going to get worse for me and so many other groups. I’m visibly queer, increasingly questioning my cis identity, and assigned female at birth. I understand the privilege my whiteness grants me, but I’m terrified. I’m terrified for my chosen family, my POC, queer, and non-binary siblings. 

It didn’t take long for things to become personal. Our local scenic mountain has been graffitied with swastikas, “Gas the Jews”, “Kill N*****s,” “Fuck f*ags, and “Trump 2016!” Two days after the election, a former classmate was attacked in NYC on his way to buy pizza by people who drove by and called him a “f*ggot” and through rocks at his face. I’ve seen my own biological family post that they’ve never been so proud of their country. I’m not questioning the legality of Trumps win, but I’m terrified. I’m terrified of the culture that’s growing where racism, sexism, xenophobia, and homophobia are things that people no longer feel they have to filter. I’m terrified for my safety.

I know a lot of you have been following this blog, and I’ve strayed from posting. I don’t always speak full on here. I share when I have the energy, when I’m up. In earnest, my depression has been really bad lately and I’ve been having a hard time just getting to work and maintaining basic human bonds. I’ve been tired, y’all. I am so unbelievably tired. And Tuesday… I feel like there’s something caught in my throat and I just can’t swallow. Life outside of the closet is filled with barbwire. You cannot love me and compromise my rights. My existence is always a fight. You are lucky if your facebook isn’t a graveyard and your bed isn’t made of funerary flowers.

Hold those you love very close. Don’t ever let them go.

Edit: DO NOT REBLOG. My friend who was attacked posted on fb and that went viral. Trump supporters found the thread and found his personal information and have been harassing him and sending threats. I do not want that happening to me or the people I care about.
