yes theyre A LOT different! so i think Amelia would initially find BB really weird. shed probably be suspicious of how overly polite he is around women because from her perspective shes seen enough men who perform being "one of the good ones" when they want something.
but IF Amelia spent enough time around him, shed eventually notice that hes consistently like this with women in general. hes not trying to impress her specifically, hes just genuinely respectful and awkward.
her interest in him would come from getting to know him and realizing hes actually a decent person despite being kind of strange.
if anything romantic ever developed, i think it would be a veryyyyy slow burn because Amelia would get easily pissed off by how clueless BB is, while also secretly thinking its kind of cute.
tho BB would mostly think shes kind of rude and sharp toward other people, which he doesnt appreciate when its undeserved. its kind of common in the Fostman family tbh. xD
so BB would probably NEVER develop any romantic feelings toward her, but Amelia COULD potentially fall for BB.

Based on everything BB has shared so far, he has confirmed that his family lives in Northern Norway.
My current theory is that BB originally came from one of the Army-centered communities in the north, and that his move to Bergen happened after he was rejected by the Norwegian Army.
Bergen is famous for the Navy and the Air Force, not the Army.
BB also said that "the Norwegian Army didn't want him" so I started looking into where the Army is actually concentrated.
Northern Norway is heavily militarized. Unlike Bergen, which revolves around the Navy, the Arctic north is where the backbone of the Norwegian Army is stationed.
Because Northern Norway shares Norway's only land border with Russia, it serves as the country's primary defensive shield. To counter any potential land invasion, Norway maintains its largest Army formations well inside the Arctic Circle.
The major Army hubs include:
Bardufoss (The Army & Aviation Hub)
Located in Målselv municipality, roughly between Tromsø and Narvik.
This is home to Brigade Nord (Brigade North), the Norwegian Army's only active combat brigade. It houses armored battalions, engineers, artillery, and Bardufoss Air Station, which supports Army helicopter operations.
Setermoen & Skjold (The Elite Combat Bases)
Located in the same inland Arctic valley system.

For now, the cities that seem most relevant are:
Tromsø, the largest Arctic city and an important logistics, hospital, and naval support center.

Bodø, home to Norway's Joint Headquarters (FOH), where the country's military leadership commands all branches.
Combining this with BB's childhood story
BB once talked about his father taking him to a cabin in the woods beside a lake, where he encountered a bear.
That detail made me circle around one particular region.
The Målselv / Bardu Valley System
My theory is that BB's family comes from Indre Troms (Inner Troms), somewhere around Bardufoss, Setermoen, or the surrounding Målselv municipality.
The bear encounter
Norway has a very small and closely monitored brown bear population.
Brown bears are almost nonexistent around coastal cities like Tromsø or the dramatic coastal mountains surrounding Narvik.
However, the deep inland forests around Bardu and Målselv are well-known migration corridors for Scandinavian brown bears moving between Sweden and Finland.
A childhood story involving a remote cabin, a lake, and a bear feels much more believable in this region.
The cabin and the lake
Indre Troms is filled with isolated mountain cabins (hytter), enormous inland lakes such as Altevatnet, and endless forests.
That landscape matches BB's story remarkably well.
The Army connection: rejection and moving to Bergen
If BB grew up around Bardufoss or Setermoen, the Norwegian Army would have been part of everyday life.
Moving to Bergen actually makes sense.
There are direct flights connecting Bardufoss Airport (BDU) with Bergen Airport (BGO), a route frequently used by military personnel, students, and people relocating between northern and western Norway.
If RB is his older brother, or another close relative who joined the Navy instead, being stationed at Haakonsvern Naval Base in Bergen would provide another possible reason for BB to move there.
So my theory is that BB's family lives somewhere in the inland Arctic valleys around Bardufoss and Setermoen.

Another clue BB mentioned is that where his family lives experiences extremely long Polar Nights (Mørketid), when the sun never rises above the horizon for months and daily life happens almost entirely in darkness.
Combining that with three other clues:
extreme darkness
a strong Army presence

I think there are only two regions that really fit.
Pasvik Valley (Pasvikdalen) near Kirkenes
Located in Norway's far northeast.
Polar Night here is brutal. The sun disappears for over two months, from late November until late January.
Even outside those months, daylight is extremely limited.
This is also where the Garrison of Sør-Varanger (GSV) is based.
Border Guard soldiers spend months patrolling Norway's border with Russia through complete darkness on foot or skis.
Pasvik also contains Norway's densest pine forests and the country's highest concentration of brown bears.
If BB grew up here, his story about the bear makes sense.
Bardu & Målselv (Indre Troms)
Although it sits slightly farther south than Kirkenes, winters are still incredibly dark.
More importantly, these communities lie inside deep mountain valleys.
Even when the sun technically rises, the surrounding mountains block much of the sunlight, leaving the valley floor in shadow for much of the winter.
This area is also home to the Intelligence Battalion and several elite Army units.
Their training emphasizes stealth, skiing, reconnaissance, and navigating mountains and frozen lakes at night without artificial light.
The region borders Altevatnet and Rohkunborri National Park, both well-known brown bear habitats.
He grew up surrounded by Army culture, spent time in forests where bears genuinely exist, moved southwest to Bergen, where there are definitely no bears but there is aquarium :) and eventually chose to leave Norway life behind for the desert. Likely he's too tired with the cold, rain, snow, ice etc at home.
So what military "house" might BB come from?
If my theory is correct, I think there are two realistic possibilities.
The Border Guard (Garrison of Sør-Varanger)
If BB's family comes from Pasvik or Kirkenes, they would likely have ties to the Border Guard.
This unit protects Norway's land border with Russia.
Their doctrine revolves around operating during Polar Night. They train to move silently through forests in complete darkness without flashlights while tracking people across snow-covered terrain.
If BB had something as simple as imperfect eyesight, or failed to meet the strict physical or psychological requirements, rejection from this unit would not be surprising.
The Intelligence Battalion
If BB comes from Indre Troms around Setermoen or Bardufoss, I actually think this fits even better.
The Intelligence Battalion is one of the Norwegian Army's most selective reconnaissance units.
Their role centers on surveillance, long-range reconnaissance, and operating behind enemy lines without being detected.
Stealth is fundamental to everything they do. Training includes navigating mountains, forests, frozen lakes, and Arctic terrain almost entirely at night while carrying heavy equipment.
Selection is also psychologically demanding. They look for calm, disciplined, methodical soldiers.
If BB was impulsive, stubborn, or too independent (when he's younger), that alone could have contributed to him being rejected.
At the moment, I think BB most likely comes from a proud Army family connected either to the Intelligence Battalion in Indre Troms or to the Border Guard in Sør-Varanger.
Could this explain how BB can stalk MC without her noticing?
One of my previous asks was whether BB uses cameras to monitor MC.
I don't think he does.
Laly has already confirmed there are times when BB genuinely doesn't know where MC is, who she's with, or what she's doing.
She also emphasized that he cannot always be around her.
At the same time, she said he is not as close as people assume, but he also isn't as far away as people think.
That made me consider another possibility.
If BB received military reconnaissance or fieldcraft training before leaving the Army, that alone could explain why he can observe someone without immediately being noticed.
Stealth and surveillance are skills that rely on positioning, patience, terrain, timing, and reading people's habits. They don't necessarily require cameras or constant technological monitoring.
To me, BB has never felt like the type of stalker who depends on hidden cameras or sophisticated technology. That makes him even scarier.
He doesn't need to watch someone 24/7 to understand them. He simply has methods that neither MC nor we fully see. He's still human, after all.
What Laly has said about his abilities
Laly has described BB as someone with genuine combat experience.
He knows how to fight. He knows how to handle firearms. But she has also said he is efficient, not invincible.
Being exceptionally good at stealth isn't the same thing as being the strongest fighter.
Reconnaissance soldiers often prioritize remaining unseen over winning direct firefights.
BB may simply be much stronger in stealth, observation, tracking, and fieldcraft than he is in open combat.
For now, I'll keep that possibility in mind because, based on everything we've been given so far, it seems to fit his characterization.
Of course, this is still just MY theory. None of it has been confirmed, so it's best treated as speculation rather than anything canon.

He definitely wouldn't know how to discipline kids, that's for sure. But every kid would absolutely love him because he's the cool dad, or the cool uncle. He's kind of like the fun dad next door.
I also feel like if his kid came home after getting beaten up by another child, Lane wouldn't wait around for the adults to sort it out. He'd march right over to the other kid first and make it very clear that if they ever laid another hand on his child, there'd be consequences. Only after that would he go talk to the parents.
Of course, it would probably end with everyone sitting in the principal's office.
Lane would probably say something like "Your kid thought it'd be a good idea to jump mine. I'm here to make sure they don't get that idea again."
He'd tone down the swearing because, well, it's a school.
"This is a school, Mr. Fostman."
But he'd still be aggressive enough, stubborn enough, and just enough of a douchebag to get his point across without crossing the line.
I can also imagine him becoming the kind of parent everyone at school whispers about.
"Don't mess with the Fostman kid."
"Why?"
"Because dealing with the dad is ten times worse. He's like a giant toddler."
The teachers would sigh every time they saw him walk through the front gate because they already knew he was about to be a handful. Meanwhile, all the kids would think he was the coolest dad ever.
He'd probably volunteer for every school event too. If you asked him why, he'd flash that stupid grin "The teachers, the moms, the ladies love me, Honey."
In reality though, he'd only signed up because it gave him another excuse to spend time with his kids.
That's pretty much how I picture him.
The only area where he'd be an absolutely terrible parent is discipline. Raising your kids with Lane would feel like having an extra child in the house because you'd constantly have to parent him too.
And if your kid turned out to be a little troublemaker, there's a very good chance they learned it from the best.
So you'd end up being the responsible one, cleaning up the messes, setting boundaries, and reminding everyone where the line is because Lane definitely isn't going to be the one doing it. Unless you whoop his ass.
Yesterday I found something really interesting. It's not anything huge, but it got me thinking a lot. A bit wall of text.
In one of the Q&As, Laly shared that BB is mesmerized by large aquariums. BB also mentioned before he enlisted that he used to live in Bergen, the city of rain in Norway.
You know what Bergen is famous for?
Bergen is most famous worldwide as the "Gateway to the Fjords" and as one of the rainiest cities in Europe.
Bergen is the primary starting point for exploring Norway’s most breathtaking natural wonders, including the Sognefjord (Norway's longest and deepest fjord) and the Hardangerfjord. Most of the famous "Norway in a Nutshell" tours start or end here.
But of course, BB is Norwegian, so looking at Bergen from a tourist's perspective doesn't really tell us much about why he chose to live there. So I dug a little deeper to see what the city is actually known for.
Bergen Is Basically the Capital of Marine Science
And this is what I found.
The Global Capital of Aquaculture
Bergen is the Silicon Valley of the seafood industry. The region hosts the world's most advanced marine science clusters and is the corporate headquarters for global seafood giants like Lerøy Seafood and Grieg Seafood. If you eat salmon anywhere in the world, there is a high chance its farming technology or logistics trace back to Bergen.
A Marine and Climate Research Powerhouse
The city is home to the University of Bergen (UiB), which ranks among the top universities globally for oceanography, marine biology, and climate research. The nearby Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research is one of the premier institutions in Europe for predicting global climate change and oceanic shifts
Subsea Technology and Specialized Shipping
While Oslo handles general finance, Bergen rules the deep ocean. It is a world leader in:
Subsea Engineering: Developing the remote-controlled robots and deep-water tech used globally for offshore energy.
Specialized Maritime Shipping: Companies like Odfjell and DOF manage massive global fleets of chemical tankers and offshore support vessels from Bergen.
A Massive Student City
With over 30,000 students across various institutions, Bergen is heavily defined by student culture. Unlike cities where campuses are isolated on the outskirts, UiB’s campus is integrated directly into the city center (Nygårdshøyden), giving the entire city a youthful, energetic, and progressive atmosphere.
Maybe Bergen Was a Personal Choice
So now I'm wondering if BB chose to move there himself.
It sounds like he only lived there for a short time before enlisting, and MC even commented that he was basically just a teenager living away from his family. She seemed genuinely surprised by that.
Then I started thinking about the picture in his locker. Specifically the one where it looks like he crashed his motorcycle and got pulled over by the police. "Politi" is police in Norway.
Now I'm wondering if BB wasn't actually living alone in Bergen at all.
Maybe he was visiting someone, or maybe he had someone acting as his guardian while he was there. That would explain why he described himself as living away from his family instead of simply saying he lived alone.
That made me think about RB.
If BB and RB are brothers, or somehow related, could RB have been in the Navy or another marine related military branch?
Bergen is actually highly critical to Norway's national defense and NATO strategy, serving as the naval backbone of the country.
Haakonsvern is the main base of the Royal Norwegian Navy and the largest naval base in the Nordic area. The base is located at Mathopen within Bergen municipality, about 15 km south-west of the city centre. Around 5,400 people work at the base as conscripts, officers or civilian staff.
Global Submarine Hub (Norway-Germany Alliance)
Bergen is the home port for the Norwegian submarine fleet. Furthermore, Norway and Germany entered a multi-billion dollar joint venture to build a completely new fleet of Type 212CD stealth submarines. The cutting-edge maintenance facility and crew training centers built specifically for this joint fleet are located right inside Bergen's naval base.
Flesland Secret Underground Air Base
While Bergen Airport, Flesland handles millions of tourists, it double-functions as a dormant military air station. Built with NATO funding during the Cold War, its main feature is an enormous, classified underground hangar blasted into the mountain capable of protecting up to 25 fighter jets from bombardment. Its original purpose was to act as a forward airbase for the US Air Force if a war broke out with the Soviet Union.
I've always wondered why BB chose the desert instead of joining anything marine-related.
Again Laly once said he's mesmerized by big aquariums.
I swear Laly always drops these random little fun facts, but I don't think they're random at all. If it's mentioned, I feel like it has to mean something.
Then you combine that with everything Bergen is actually known for, and I can't help wondering if BB once had a childhood dream.
You know, the classic question. "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Maybe it had something to do with marine biology, aquariums, ocean research, or something along those lines. Idk?
If he had an older brother who understood that dream, wouldn't that brother encourage him? Maybe he'd tell BB that he's still just a kid and it's okay to enjoy what he loves while he still can.
If RB is into motorcycles, then he's obviously someone with hobbies of his own. Maybe he's the type to tell his dad "I already do everything you want. Let me at least have something that's mine."
If that's the kind of person he is, then he'd probably understand exactly how suffocating BB's father was.
He'd encourage BB to spend time learning about what he loves, or at the very least enjoy it before enlisting.
That could explain why BB moved to Bergen.
Maybe he just wanted a little time for himself, surrounded by the things he genuinely liked or felt relaxed.
Or Maybe Bergen Was Where RB Was Stationed
Since Bergen is also such an important military city, it made me wonder if RB happened to be stationed there.
If RB and BB are related, maybe that's where RB lived while serving, and BB moved there to stay with him.
Even if they're not blood relatives, BB could've moved there simply because Bergen offered everything he was interested in. Then maybe he met RB there, and that's how they got to know each other.
As for why they met again in the US, I honestly have no idea.
Maybe RB eventually moved there, or maybe he was just visiting. Either way, it's still possible.
The only thing I struggle with is BB's father!!!!!
If his dad is truly obsessed with legacy and raising soldiers, how did he allow two of his sons to leave the country?
We don't even know how many siblings BB has, so I'm just assuming here.
BB is a special case because he specifically said the Norwegian military didn't want him.
But what about RB? Was it the same situation?
Even if RB wasn't serving in the military, would their father really let him leave that easily, especially if he'd already written one of his sons off as a failure?
Sure, maybe RB simply told the old man to screw off and lived his own life because he was already an adult.
It's hard for me to picture....
In my previous theory about BB's family, I mentioned the possibility that his father, his brothers, or both held commanding positions within the Norwegian military.
That would explain why BB said the Norwegian military didn't want him.
If his father viewed him as a disgrace to the family name, it would make sense that he wouldn't want BB anywhere near him or his own military base.
Maybe the plan was to send BB somewhere else.
Another base? Maybe Bergen?
Then maybe meeting RB changed everything. Maybe after talking to him, BB decided to leave Norway entirely and enlist somewhere else instead.
BB once said starting over is hard. That would make some sense if someone encouraged him to do it.
Someone who told him a fresh start would be better than staying somewhere filled with painful memories.
As for RB, there's still way too little information to say anything for certain. But if he is connected to BB somehow, I can imagine something like,
"Dude, just enlist there. I'm planning to move there someday too. We can ride together again."
But now that I've looked deeper into Bergen, I'm also wondering if BB saying "the Norwegian army didn't want me" wasn't referring to the military as a whole.
The military is an umbrella term after all.
The Army: Trains and fights on land (soldiers, tanks, infantry).
The Navy: Trains and fights on water (warships, submarines, aircraft carriers).
The Air Force: Trains and fights in the air (fighter jets, bombers, helicopters).
The Coast Guard / Home Guard: Focuses on defending the country's immediate borders and coastlines
What if BB's family has deep roots in the Navy?
Although honestly, if RB is in the military at all, I like to picture him fitting the Air Force more.
Then I asked Laly, and she confirmed the boys know how to swim (don't know which one but I used BOYS so I assume all of them know how to swim).
If RB is related to BB somehow, I could definitely imagine him serving in the Navy, the Air Force, or holding another position at one of those military bases.
Personally, I still can't fully picture RB being BB's biological brother.
I just don't think BB's father would've let his more "successful" son walk away that easily.
I also don't think RB necessarily has to be that closely related.
He could be a more distant relative from BB's mother's German side or even from his father's side.
He doesn't have to be a blood brother.
That would actually fit really well with the old man's quote about being "brothers through time, not by blood."
At least that's my interpretation if we're assuming BB met RB much earlier than we originally thought, before enlisting and everything else.
If RB is only a distant relative or just acquaintance, especially from BB's mother's side, then it also becomes easier to understand why he eventually moved to the US.
If he has some kind of military background, he doesn't even have to be a soldier. He could've worked in another position that gave him more free time for his hobbies.
That would also explain why BB's father never had any control over where RB went or what he did. RB wasn't actually his son.
MC and BB's Conversation
That could also explain something else.
When MC asked whether BB lived alone, he hesitated to answer.
What if he wasn't alone at all?
What if someone had actually been assigned to watch over him?
And what if that person was RB?
Unlike the strict subordinates around BB's father and brothers, this guy was actually fun and encouraged all the crazy stuff BB did.
Something else that caught my attention was how BB talked about Bergen itself.
When MC asked what it was like, he only mentioned the mountains. He never really described the city.
He just brushed it off as another place, like there was nothing particularly special about it.
But when MC asked whether he missed it, he couldn't answer with either yes or no.
That makes me think Bergen left him with really complicated feelings. Maybe both good and bad.
Or maybe he simply wasn't there long enough to grow attached, even though the place still left a lasting impression.
BB also emphasized that Bergen wasn't exactly paradise.
That makes me think it still carried some connection to his military background. Even far away from home, he probably still felt trapped by expectations.
He also said he misses when things were simpler.
MC asked whether he missed the place or the time, and he answered neither.
He really emphasized that.... so if he doesn't miss the place or the time...
Then what does he miss?
The only answer I can come up with is people.
A specific person. Or maybe several people.
Because if RB wasn't originally from Bergen, then technically he wouldn't belong to either the place or the time.
He'd simply be someone BB met there.
And if Bergen itself wasn't exactly paradise, then it makes sense that BB wouldn't particularly want to revisit it.
The way BB randomly brought up Bergen while trying to convince MC that he was used to the rain also feels strangely intentional.
Maybe rain reminds him of much more than we realize.

Ohhhh, I like this question. I actually have a BB fic idea about this, but I ended up not posting it because I'm still not satisfied with the atmosphere yet.
I think it depends on how long you've known each other. I'm still not sure why BB hides his face from us though. Is it just because of the scar, or is there a much deeper reason? I like to think it's both. Part of him wants to hide his scar, and another part of him doesn't want to bring back whatever memories it might trigger MC.
I think he'd let you touch his scar before he'd let you see his face. Ehehehe, I LOVEEEE slow burn.
Like, imagine you're together in the dark. He quietly takes off his helmet, but you still can't really see him. Instead, he'd let you touch his face, especially the scar. Almost like he's helping you ease into it. If you've felt the shape of it first, maybe you won't be so shocked when he finally lets you see his whole face.
I can picture him gently guiding your hand to his cheek, letting your fingertips trace the scar, then just waiting to see what you do next. He'd let you decide where to go from there.

If you're already in a relationship with him though, I don't really see him refusing to let you touch him. He'd probably be a little awkward at first because he's not used to that kind of intimacy. It would make him flustered more than anything.
But little by little, once he realizes you genuinely enjoy holding his face, tracing his scar, and smiling every time you feel him melt into your touch.... eheheh.
He'd lean into your hand without even thinking about it. Maybe he'd even start seeking it out after a long day, resting his cheek against your palm because that's become one of the places where he feels safest.
It would give him that same warm, fuzzy feeling he gets whenever you say his name.

I know it's been implied BB would do "shady things" if we pick Lane, but since Amelia is as he says "a lady person" would that change how he acts? To put it simple would BB now harm Amelia because she's a girl? Or would he not care?
yes, the fact that Amelia is a "lady person" would change a lot about BB's behavior.
with Lane, its easier because, in BB's mind, hes a man so he has to deal with the consequences of getting in BB's way. however with Amelia, BB would be less openly aggressive toward her because shes a woman.
so instead of directly attacking her, BB would try to separate the MC from her by manipulating the situation around her.
he wouldnt necessarily try to get rid of Amelia but would simply try to make sure the MC doesnt need her anymore.

Someone asked me if Lane only fell in love with MC because she slapped him, and if she hadn't, would he have never fallen for her?
I've actually thought about why Lane fell in love with MC a lot. The biggest problem is that we don't really know what happened before the current timeline or what MC was exactly like back then.
Personally, I like to assume her personality hasn't changed that much. Besides her fear of blood, Lane never really comments on her acting differently. It's possible he noticed some changes, but Lane also doesn't strike me as the type to ask unless he thinks it's his business. Unless they're having a genuinely personal conversation like the stockroom date or the bathroom scene, I doubt he'd pry into her past.
So with what we know, there are only a few things we can really speculate about.
First, I think MC is someone who can tolerate Lane's antics without actually enabling them. She doesn't laugh at every dumb joke or encourage his behavior. She usually sees him as a nuisance, but she also isn't afraid to react when he crosses a line. The slap on their first shift is a perfect example of that.
If you pay attention to MC during her first shift, she's actually very polite. She's more outgoing when it comes to doing her job, but she's also incredibly timid. She's young, and she even tells Lane she doesn't know how to use the POS system when he asks if she's worked customer service before.
That makes me think she'd either never worked in customer service before or maybe she'd never had a real job at all. I like to imagine she finished school, left home, and started picking up random jobs just to survive until she met Amy, who introduced her to RJ.
We also know the story takes place in 2009 during the Great Recession in US. Whatever job MC had before probably wasn't enough to support her anymore. Or based on the memory loss theory, maybe her medical history made employers hesitant to hire her.
Meanwhile, RJ's had been doing well 3 years before the story but slowly started declining. We still don't know exactly what happened there, but RJ clearly needed Lane around, which suggests there was more going on behind the scenes than we currently know.
If that's true, then MC probably came from a completely different environment than Lane. Their life experiences would've been very different, and I imagine Lane had mostly been surrounded by people similar to himself. Meeting someone like MC would've naturally caught his attention.
Something else that stands out is how seriously MC takes her work. She's terrified of being late, she's extremely strict with her schedule, and she's constantly neglecting her own health just to keep working. It almost makes me wonder if whatever job she had before was incredibly demanding, or maybe she had a strict boss who made her anxious all the time.
That might be why Lane finds her behavior so funny. Even if other employees were better workers than he was, they probably weren't nearly as uptight as MC. She stands out. Maybe he became curious about why she acted that way, even if only on a surface level. On top of that, she knows Amy and is friends with her, and according to her, Lane has a habit of hitting on Amy's friends anyway.
So I don't think the slap made him go "Oh, she's feisty."
I think what interested him was everything surrounding it.
MC spends so much of her time suppressing herself. She hides behind this polite, restrained version of herself. Weirdly, that's not so different from Lane hiding behind his loud, carefree bravado. They're completely different people on the surface, but they're both wearing masks. I think Lane could sense that before he consciously understood it.
There's also the fact that Lane literally writes in his notes that MC is "weird."
I don't think he means she's weird just because she slapped him or because she was mean to him. I think her entire presence feels strange to him. She's difficult to read. She doesn't fit into any category he's used to, and that's exactly what draws him in.
Jessica (the girl at Lane's old job) also tells us a lot about how people usually treat Lane. Most people either tolerate him, ignore him, or joke and flirt back with him.
MC does none of those things but everything at the same time.
She doesn't really flirt. She doesn't joke back. She doesn't completely shut him down either. Her reactions stay a bit neutral, which probably makes Lane wonder what it'll take to get a real reaction out of her. He's constantly trying to push her buttons because she's so hard to figure out.
I also don't think Lane fell in love overnight. I think he developed a crush first, and that slowly became love. Lane just feels things more intensely than most people so you'd feel he's falling in love a bit too quickly, but that's just who Lane is.
I don't think there has to be some huge dramatic reason for him to like someone. He seems like the type of person who falls for people he genuinely enjoys being around, people he can vibe with. MC just happened to be someone he naturally clicked with.
At first, MC doesn't really show any romantic interest in him. But once she does start opening up, she asks questions about him, his past, and his life. She actually wants to understand who he is instead of keeping everything casual. Even when their relationship starts casually, she still puts genuine thought and effort into it.
And Lane notices that.
That's why he's always telling her she shouldn't like him, or that she'd be better off hating him because it'd make things easier. Deep down, I think he knows MC wants something real and stable, and he doesn't believe he can give her that. At least not at that point in the story.
To me, that's the real reason he falls for her.
MC forces him into emotional territory he's never had to deal with before.
With other people, everything could stay casual. He could flirt, have fun, and walk away without thinking twice. That's the image he builds for himself, the carefree playboy who never gets attached.
But with MC, he can't treat things that way.... I don't think he even wants to.
Once she becomes part of his life, I think he realizes it'll be incredibly difficult to let her go again. That's why he tells her he'd be an idiot if he ever gave her his heart. It's not because he thinks she isn't worth loving. It's because he knows that if he lets himself fall, he'll fall much harder than he ever intended.
So no, I don't think Lane fell in love with MC because she slapped him.
I think he would've fallen for her anyway.
The slap was just the catalyst. It accelerated everything that was already there. It forced him to notice her much sooner than he otherwise would've. If that moment never happened, I still think working together and gradually getting to know each other would've led him to the exact same place.
It just would've taken longer.
And no, I definitely don't think it's because he's secretly into getting slapped.

Lane would probably BUTST OUT LAUGHING the second he sees her. not because he thinks it looks bad, but because wow. that was unexpected. in his head, its like:
"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO OUR HAIR???"
so hed also tell her he liked her better with long hair and that she lost attractiveness points in his eyes (lie), because yes now she looks like a tomboy.
"you joining a women's rugby team now?"
"ill buy you a little football jersey to complete the look.😏"
but Lane would eventually develop this weird realization that he actually finds the haircut really fucking sexy, particularly when she gets angry at him and tells him to fuck off.

BB would probably stare at her for a while before even speaking. if you ask him whats going on hed be like:
"i have to update my mental image of you."
hes so literal and formal about certain things that in this situation, he wouldnt immediately think in terms of gender stereotypes the way Lane does.
but he also wouldnt think about telling her if it looks good because for him its just hair, so hed just end up saying:
"this haircut is significantly more practical. less likely to obstruct your vision. it wont get caught on things as easily."
BB would probably be drawn to the fact that she suddenly looks more severe and confident, which hed consider hot.😳
