Song of the Day: Town Portal, “K”
This record blew my mind this morning. I guess it would fit under the post-rock/metal blanket, but there are elements of prog and weird San Diego and/or Cleveland discordant guitar weirdness that make it tough to stuff under there. At times it reminds me of Cloudkicker and Intronaut, and at others it reminds me of some Jon Howell guitar craziness. I dunno. It’s just great, and you should listen to it.
Album of the Day: Blis - No One Loves You
Excellent, heavy, emotive rock in the vein of The Devil & God era Brand New, early Manchester Orchestra, Superheaven, and Citizen. Well worth a listen.
Album of the Day: The EFFECTS - Eyes to the Light
An new Dischord release featuring ex-Faraquet guitar player, Devin Ocampo. RIYL: angular, mathy guitars and bass over rock-solid drumming captured perfectly by J Robbins.

Album of the Day: Propagandhi - Victory Lap
Back in the 90s I listened to almost any and all things Fat Wreck and Epitaph, and while I still really enjoy a lot of those bands, most of that enjoyment is nostalgic at this point. Propagandhi is the outlier. I am legitimately as excited and fulfilled by their new records as I was when I heard How To Clean Everything for the first time in ‘93, and Victory Lap is no exception. It is (without a doubt) one of my favorite records of the year, one of the top two or three records they’ve ever made, and it has cemented Chris Hannah as one of my favorite punk guitarists (and vocalists) of all-time. Just a phenomenal record.

On of my favorite songs of their f-ing outstanding new record. Highly recommended if you like grungy, noisy, dissonant rock.

This record was in heavy rotation on my flights to and from the East Coast, and all the van rides in between. It’s breathtaking.

I’ve had this riff stuck in my head since they soundchecked with it in NYC last Thursday. Had such a good time doing a short tour with them -- great people and their new record is really good. Well worth a spin if you’re into heavy riff-driven rock.

One of my favorite tracks from Play Dead. Chill-inducing.
Song of the Day: The National, “Nobody Else Will Be There”
Instantly hooked. That piano line is haunting and infectious.
Song of the Day: Death From Above, “Nomad”
Really digging this record. Great tones, big riffs, tons of hooks.
Song of the Day: Cloudkicker, “LA After Rain”
I could listen to the outro of this song on a loop forever.
Song of the Day: Grizzly Bear, “Four Cypresses”
My favorite track from the fantastic new Grizzly Bear record. There’s just so much to unpack here -- layers upon layers. It gets better with every listen. It’s also featured on a really fascinating episode of Song Exploder. Worth checking out.

Song of the Day: Cloakroom, “Paperweight”
I’m on such a major Cloakroom kick at the moment. The jam that starts at 3:45 in this song gives me the chills. So f-ing good. This entire session (from 2013) rules, and is well worth your time. I hope they do another one with some songs from the new record soon.

Things have been a bit hectic, but the primary reason for my absence has been that I somehow lost control of hermitology.tumblr.com, and I was trying to find a way to get it back. Long story short -- it’s impossible -- so now I’m back with a new tumblr URL, and hoping to get back to posting on a semi-regular basis.
