I think it's actually way less dark and way more stupid.
It's hype for the inevitable rug pull. Ed Zitron talks so much about how the tech in the data centers are, for the most part, already completely out of date before the center is even open and operational because they're not actually going to be used for anything. It's all hype designed to make the AI push feel inevitable because they want to build it as big as possible before running off leaving all of us sane people footing the bill.
It's so simple it's stupid.
Build a hype machine around your products by getting yourself in front of as many journalists as possible and exploiting the uniquely American desperation to escape the rat race ->
convince every community they need data centers and that those will somehow ease the deeply rooted ills that no one seems to be able to solve (obligatory el problema es el capitalismo) ->
keep the cycle of money flowing between like seven companies while soaking up as much investment capital and venture capital from both normies on the ground and huge companies desperately trying not to get "left behind" ->
And then we are all left holding the bag. It's worse than any conspiracy theories could predict because it is on its face just a scam and stupid. You people all want it to be so much darker than it is because at least that's INTERESTING. but it's nothing more than a hyperscaled rug pull in the end.
