after everyone escapes the circus, you're bent on reuniting w/ jax, no matter what condition he's in
(AHHHHHH NO SPOILERS BUT THE FINALEEE)
w.c - 3.5k, hurt/comfort, some swearing
Trees. Trees. Gas station. City. Trees. Cornfields.
The drive to this college could not have been any longer or exhausting. Two days. I had been on the road for two days, relying on nothing but sheer adrenaline, monsters, and chips. I might’ve treated myself better, if my bank account didn’t sit at exactly $267.05. And that was before the gas money. After 6 months in the circus, I was surprised to find my car still in decent condition, and my bank account untouched.
Fuck the circus.
Never.
Again.
The headset and computer that had sent me there, were now sitting in a heap of unusable junk in that storage container, courtesy of my rageful tantrum. Tears, screaming, absolute desperation. It hadn’t been a pretty sight, when I had finally understood the weight of what the circus put us through.
Me and a couple of friends had bought a unit from one of those storage sites, like dumpster diving but bougier. Did I care that they ditched me at the last minute? Nah, I loved having the whole thing to myself, or at least I thought I did. Until I put on that stupid headset, swept away to a place with jesters, teeth, and Jax.
Jax.
My grip on the steering wheel tightened as memories of that purple bunny swam through my head. I shook my head in pitiful self-misery. I missed that annoying bipolar trickster. Where were the others? I had guesses. Scattered around the Americas, probably. One of them might be in Europe, but my mystery-solving skills didn’t take me that far. In a lonely frenzy, I had scoured the internet for news stories of newly found missing-persons. Seven occurring in a day would’ve been unheard of. Except, it wasn’t seven, because I hadn’t been reported. Just miraculously escaped that storage building and trekked back to my old flat. My roommate must not’ve cared that much, because she never filed a missing persons report, or touched any of my stuff. If our landlord had sucked my rent money out of my savings, then why would she? I had lost touch with my family ages ago, so it wasn’t surprising they didn’t reach out.
If I hadn’t been reported, that meant that the others might not’ve been either, meaning I had little to nothing to go off of. Except, two people had been found, according to the news. Both on the same day I had returned to the real world. One, a girl found desperately on the run from an abandoned warehouse. And the other… Well, the other was my ride or die. A college student, found wandering his old campus, particularly near a condemned dorm building. He had been a senior as of two years ago, but mysteriously went missing one day and never returned to complete his degree. Not like the degree was the important part, the university was a notorious party school. Go figure Jax would wind up there. It was probably on the top of his list for college choices.
But that college and its condemned structure stood as my destination- a measly 48 hours drive from my city. Jax wouldn’t be there. To even toy with that idea was stupid. But if I could find the computer and headset that ruined Jax’s life, I would destroy it. Crush it into oblivion if I had to. I didn’t care if that stood as my one sad purpose in life, but I would track down as many of those machines as I could and erase them from earth.
It might've been dumb, yes. But at least the heroics of it kept me sane- gave me some strange purpose in the miserable real world. And it kept me saner than the idea of driving this far to find him. But he wouldn't be there. After all, no mentally right person would stay in the place they had been found, especially if it involved a looming computer, haunted by a pair of dentures. Then again, I was hardly mentally right, either. Hey! That didn’t matter though-!
“SHIT!” I screamed, releasing my inner turmoil at the thought of doing all of this to desperately find Jax. “Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!” I released a rough, ragged breath. Maybe I was losing my mind, but it felt so good to finally swear.
Maybe I shouldn’t have put all my hopes and dreams into one news article. But what else did I have? Nothing. Not a single person would understand the sheer trauma of what I had endured. Not unless their names were Gangle, Kinger, Ragatha, Zooble, Pomni, or Jax. I didn’t even know Jax’s real name. The article had kept it hidden for privacy’s sake. But what hope did I have if this fell through?
=+=
Parking? A breeze. Meshing in with the college-aged crowd? A breeze, I was their age. But locating the dilapidated building and sneaking inside? Also a breeze. Someone had been stupid enough to leave the basement entrance open. Probably some night-shift campus officer. The place had been condemned for years, allegedly. The college’s finances weren’t enough to cover the demolition and reconstruction.
My phone’s flashlight did the bare minimum, barely lighting up the broad expanse of a basement. It would’ve creeped me out a little, hadn’t the broad daylight streamed in from the tiny slits of ceiling windows. Realistically the only thing to be scared of here would be stumbling across a couple getting down to business.
A paint-peeling stairwell brought me up to the dorm halls. Something inside me withered at the thought of checking every single last one of these rooms, closets and all. But I would. And I did. The second, third, fourth floors were all scoured. As I tread to cover the fifth, the hallway floor creaked beneath my feet, an eerie sound.
Tink.
I froze, foot poised in the air like a burglar on TV. The suspicious sound flowed through an ajar door at the end of the hall.
Click. Click. Click.
Slowly, cautiously, I darted to the door, trying to peak through the crack. The hopeless image of a man trying to light a cig stared back. He sat against the far wall, swathed in the sunlight peeping through the sheer curtains. Shaggy black locks fell to ears, and the shadow of uncut stubble framed his jaw. The baggy purple sweatshirt did nothing to defend against the homeless-man allegations.
Something clicked in the back of my mind. I whipped out my phone, swiping through pictures I had taken of that news article on my laptop back at home. Annoyingly, my service had been shut down after 6 months of late payments. I stared at one image of a boy in a black boxy tee and ragged hair. The news station had recorded an interview with him, and slapped a black bar over his eyes. But-
I glanced back up through the crack, double-taking as I reassessed both the picture and the man in front of me. It couldn’t be the same man.
It couldn’t.
Could it?
Despite my entire nervous system screaming, I pushed through the door.
I stared at him.
He stared at me.
“Who are you?” I blurted out, as if he were the one invading my area.
He tilted his head away, shying at the ambient light from my phone. “Oh that’s funny,” he scoffed, almost slurred.
I could feel my stress spike at the tone of his voice. Was it familiar? Or was I desperately psyching myself out? “Well?” I retorted.
He shoved a hand through his hair, rambling to himself, “Everyone knows who I am! They shoved a fucking camera in my face and said I’d be on TV.”
I blinked, mind whirring. The next word tumbled from my mouth far too quickly. “Jax?”
“What do you want?” he barked. Not like he was confused by the name, but as if he were annoyed that someone would address him at all.
I flashed the light directly onto him, revealing the details hidden by the door. The whites of his eyes blazed red, dark circles lay beneath them, and his fingers clenched around a can that appeared to have been emptied long ago. One leg propped up at an angle, acting as a meager line of defense. He could’ve been far too old to be shacking up at a college, but something in his demeanor gave him an almost boyish look.
I shook my head and refused to believe this wreck was actually Jax in the flesh. It couldn’t be. After everything we had been through together, after all the jokes, all the more… intimate things. This sorry, overly-high excuse of a human couldn’t have been him. Of course he never mentioned it, but he had to have someone to go back to. He wouldn’t be lying around here like a bum.
He took a long drag from his cigarette. His pointed gaze drew my attention away from scrutinizing, and towards something different entirely. Across the room, atop an ancient desk, sat a computer, straight from the 90s. Next to it, lay an unused, grimy headset.
I never did, and never would, apologize for my actions. I snatched the electronic goggles and smashed them against the wood. The boxy monitor proved a bit more difficult, but with a great heave, it crashed to the floor. Glass shattered everywhere. I drove my foot into the screen, ensuring it would never display a single pixel again. Then, the real prize, the computer. The white case flew apart, speck by plastic speck, until it finally lay in pieces. I stepped back, admiring my work. My hand ached, and the nail of my ring finger bled, but the pain more than outweighed the satisfaction of watching another circus entrapment be ripped to pieces.
A smug voice behind me piped up, “Well, aren’t you badass.”
I spun around, raggedly swallowed gulps of air. Something stirred in me at his smirk. It mirrored a smirk I had seen a million times, albeit more pixelated and toothy. I shoved the image out of my head, hating that I drew a connection.
“This is a joke,” I huffed, determined on refusing to believe it. “You’re a joke!” I spat, frustrated and heartbroken that I thought this hobo could be Jax.
His long fingers slipped another cig out of its small box, and lit it with much more ease than the first. I couldn’t even be sure he heard me, he looked so far gone. In a fit that might’ve been considered unfair, I reached for the cases of cans stacked next to them. With one great heave I hucked them into the hall, the sound of crinkling tin and hissing fissures brought joy to my ears.
“Who the hell'd you give those to? Charity?” he grunted. The delay of his reaction was almost entertaining to watch. He attempted to force himself to his feet, only to wind back up on his butt.
I snorted, and plucked the box of cigarettes from his limp hands.
He glared at me, “You gonna toss those too?”
I ignored him, and lit one for myself, releasing a huff of smoke. I threw the pack back into his lap. “Is your name really Jax?” I asked bluntly.
“It sure is,” he grinned, lolling his head around, “You can’t borrow it, sorry.”
I rolled my eyes, wondering why I even bothered with this man. I did know, though. I wanted, maybe needed him to be Jax. Because if he wasn’t, I’d have nowhere else to turn. I debated between making the trek to my car to wait out his slow return to sobriety, or staking out camp here. The appeal of conking out in the car almost lured me out of the room, but if I did that, I knew how easy it would be for this man to slip away forever. I knew I couldn’t live with that regret. With a muffled groan, I plopped down next to him; so close that our shoulders pressed against each other.
“Take me to dinner first, would ya?” he slurred out.
I didn’t even want to witness the expression on his face. But at least he didn’t reject me- a minor plus. As I settled against the wall, I released a long, pent up sigh. “So, what’s your story? Why are you here?” I asked, hoping to drag more information out of him. I didn’t care if he wasn't in any state of mind to have a conversation.
He tilted his head down. My eyes briefly flicked up to meet his, a soft brown, glittering with specks of color. He laughed dryly. “I got caught. Ran away and wound up here.”
“And before that?" I asked.
A cocky tone rang through his words, “I left a circus. A really shitty circus…”
Unintentionally, I tuned out his voice. My ears rang at that simple word, “Circus.” I couldn’t comprehend it. This couldn’t be him. But no matter how hard I tried to rationalize the thought away, I couldn’t. The familiar lilt to his voice, his incessant smirky teasing, and most of all his story. Then, I remembered lines from that news article.
“Despite being taken into custody for questioning, the man fled the scene on foot. As of Thursday morning, he has evaded all encounters with the police, and continues to be missing. Some sources say the man may have lived in the condemned building for the past two years, sparking conversation of infringement and…”
I swallowed back the thrilling uncomfortableness. I tucked my knees to my chest, uncertain of what action to take, and knowing I wouldn’t get any truthful answers until every substance had cleaned itself from his body. “Jax?” I asked, the name sounding like lead on my tongue. “Hurry up and get sober.”
He gave a laugh that could’ve been fake or genuine, “Aw, you’re not fun!”
I could almost picture the purple bunny retorting with those words. I rested my head against his shoulder, tentatively allowing a smile. If this really was Jax… Well, I didn’t dare finish that thought until I knew for certain.
At long last, the spike of adrenaline from scouting out a haunted house, and rampaging against another computer began to ebb. As I slowly relaxed, my entire body began to crash. I hadn’t slept in over two days after all. My eyelids weighed heavy, and I briefly thought of how unwise and compromising this was for me. I immaturely ignored my gut-feeling and stuck with risking a few hours sleep next to him. “You better be who you say you are,” I mumbled wearily.
=+=
I blinked away the bleary sleep from my eyes. Sunlight poured through the windows, slightly less than earlier. I pried my head off my shoulder, hissing at the soreness that shouldn’t have set in that quick. A distinct lack of warmth pricked at all my sides. The space around me felt too empty. In a mild panic I bolted to my feet, scouring the room.
The pseudo-Jax was nowhere to be found.
I glanced at the time on my phone. My heart dropped. I had been asleep for 18 hours. That was more than enough time for Jax to reach mild sobriety and flee the scene. Where would he go? Did he have anywhere to go? So many unanswered questions, and currently, no Jax to answer them. I shoved my phone back into my pocket. “Shit,” I muttered. I glanced around, eyeing a little pile of personal belongings. If he left those, then maybe-
I snapped my head at the creak of the door. The man of the hour trudged in, dumping a plastic bag of what looked suspiciously like gas station snacks to the floor. My body wilted in relief. His attention lingered on me, even as he pulled a white monster from the bag and cracked it open. His eyes narrowed like a cat's, and a smirk tugged slowly at his face. With the bluntest, most teasing lilt to his voice, he asked, “Did we have sex last night?”
Nothing could’ve prepared me for those words. I snorted, “What?”
He huffed, dropping the joke, “I woke up next to a you, idiot. What happened? Fill me in.”
I scoffed, coming to my senses, “I just needed a place to crash. We did not do anything. And Nothing about last night was enjoyable.”
He tutted, “My poor, sore shoulder says otherwise.”
A thought occurred to me. “Do you not remember anything about last night?”
He took a long, drawn out sip from his can. “Nope. And I am not sorry for anything I said. Especially if I called you a bitch.”
I rethought the words we just exchanged. It became ten times funnier now that I knew his first real encounter with me was waking up to me on his shoulder.
He propped a hand on his hip, taking reign of the conversation in my silence, “Anyway, why are you still here? This is my place.”
“Your place?” I parroted incredulously.
“Yes, my place. See, it has a chair,” he pointed to a rusted folding metal chair in the corner. “A computer-” Suddenly, stark panic overtook his features. He bolted to the desk strewn with broken shards of plastic and wires, losing his drink in the chaos. “What happened?! Who did this?!” He desperately clicked the mouse, the only piece I hadn’t damaged. He whipped on me, fire ablaze in his eyes, “You,” he hissed, “You did this?!”
A forced smile plastered to my face. “You wanted to keep it?”
“Yes!”
“Why?”
“So I could see my friends!” he snapped, followed by a disgusted glare, as if he couldn’t fathom the idea of someone not wanting to keep their tooth-haunted computer. His gaze darted away. I sensed regret, following that confession. “Shit,” he murmured, raking a hand through his hair.
With that one sentence, everything clicked. Why he shacked up in this building. Why he needed the computer. Why he rode the line of wasting his life away. All done for the sake of mending the chasm of loneliness, growing within him day by day. I knew it all too well.
My heart pounded against my chest, as that dim flicker of hope bloomed. For the first time, I spoke my next word with absolute certainty. “Jax?”
He froze, like he needed buffering in real time. His features hardened, then softened, then rested somewhere in the middle in dramatic disbelief. “How do you know that name?”
My tone mimicked his, cautious yet hopeful, “That’s the only name I know you by.”
His eyes flickered, registering the full weight of that sentence. He flashed a distressed smile, desperately failing to mask over his confusion. He adopted that snarky, demeaning tone, as if trying to push away the rush of emotions. “Holy shit. No. Zooble?”
Hearing that silly name spoke aloud sent a beaming grin to my face. I shook my head, a laugh bubbling out of me, “Nope.”
In real time, I witnessed his facade of denial slip away. His pupils dilated, and he scoffed incredulously. He closed the distance between us and gripped my wrist, pivoting my arm around like a rag doll. As if he needed to determine my humanity- that I wasn’t the pixelated ballerina I used to be. He stared into my eyes, unwavering. “Lei?”
I nodded, heart pounding. That circus-generated name sounded more genuine than my real one.
Then, he yanked my wrist. In one quick motion, he collapsed against the wall, tugging me into his lap. I couldn’t process it. The weight of his arms crushing me against him. His face burying against my neck. His ragged breathing against my skin. I could almost feel his mental fortitude cracking beneath me. Each released a little more denial, replaced by a growing flicker of hope. He shuddered, murmuring into me, “Fuck.”
I clung to him desperately. It felt like mind games, but slowly, I merged this strange act of being held by a man, with the purple bunny I knew so well. The concept of him physically in my arms proved to be unimaginably surreal. I tentatively rested my head against his, simply letting him work through it all. I knew it far too well. Maybe, in a way, I needed this just as much as he did.
Over the next several minutes our emotions unraveled with one another, silent, but realer than anything a video game could’ve ever given us. He peeled back, eyes rounding with an unusual softness- one I had never seen before. He broke the silence, slyly smirking, “You were prettier in the circus. Lei-lei the ballet dancer.”
My memories took me back to my avatar in the circus: a porcelain ballerina, like the ones found in a music box. I rolled my eyes, “I hate you.”
He grinned, “No you don’t.”
“Yes. I do.”
Despite the overly emotional moment of actually finding one another in real life, he seemed hell bent on returning to the usual banter we shared. Like he couldn’t handle showing any more vulnerability than he did. His expression flickered with something menacing, “Remember that time you convinced Caine to give me a dick.”
My expression must’ve betrayed my sheer disbelief, because a shit-eating grin sprang to his face. “What the fuck. Yes but-”
“You didn’t hate me then,” he sang, a glint in his eye.
“It was a strap on,” I scoffed, the memory of that time blazing to the front of my mind. I couldn’t ignore the way my entire body warmed, especially with him pinned under me. I hated out of thousands of more important things he could’ve mentioned, he landed on that.
That little smirk of his must’ve been permanently plastered to his face. He leaned in, inches from my face, “The details were a little fuzzy.”
My hand shoved him away, landing on his cheek and jawline. With suspiciously little resistance, I pinned his head to the wall. He wiggled his eyebrows, eyes alight with mischief. “Do it,” he teased.
I paused, refusing to let my gaze drop anywhere below his eyes.
“C’mon,” he drawled, “Do it!”
My brain had all but shut off. With a shortened inhale, I lifted my hand to his eyes. All too quickly, I shoved my lips onto his. His smirk melted instantly, replaced by a more feverish emotion. His arms dragged me impossibly closer, refusing to lose any sliver of me. In the heat of the moment, I managed a quick murmur. “Shut up,” I breathed against him. An arrogant, playful laugh escaped him as he dragged me back into the kiss.

I sat atop a counter, watching the hustle and bustle of the group around me in the basement of the WSQK. Nancy rummaging for bullets. Dustin throwing on a piece of gear. And Steve searching for a usable weapon. My eyes trained on that man, taking in his new look from head to toe. He looked good, there was no denying it, but the one thing I couldn’t tear my gaze from was that baseball cap.
He slammed a toolbox drawer shut, hefting something in his hand. Seemingly satisfied with the find, he moved toward me, as if instinctively sensing my stare. “You’re ignoring me,” he commented, the words drowned from the others’ ears by the ambient noise.
I pursed my lips in a smile, pleased with being at eye level for once. “This isn’t exactly the privacy of the backseat of your car.” I nodded upwards. “I like the hat, it’s different.”
A new voice popped up beside him, startling us both. “Gotta go out in style while you determine the fate of the world.”
Steve glared at Dustin. “I’m sorry, what are you exactly, a weed?”
The boy spread out his arms, taking in his leafy army attire. “It’s a gillysuit,” he said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Ok well, go gilly your suit somewhere else.”
Dustin rolled his eyes and spun away, but not without throwing up a finger at Steve’s back. I threw one up in return, only for the jokes. “Woah- Careful with that.” Steve grabbed my hand, forcing my attention on him. I chuckled, becoming warm under his touch. He fidgeted with my fingers, until they interlocked with his. I lowered our hands, out of sight of the others.
I glanced up at him, taking in the intense look of adoration in his eyes. “Don’t look at me like that.”
A glint of amusement flickered across his face. “Like what?”
“Like I’m paranoid.” I lied.
He laughed, a sound that sent butterflies flying through me. “I’m not looking at you like that.”
“Then what are you look at me like?
“It’s a secret.”
“Care to share?”
“Uh, no.”
I held back another broad smile. “Well, I have a not-so-secret secret.” I paused for effect. He raised his eyebrows impatiently. “I really like that hat.” A giggle escaped me, and I felt my cheeks go hot.
“You want it?” he teased knowingly.
I jokingly glared at him, “No.”
“Ah, okay,” he grinned. His hand reached up, and the next thing I knew, the cap smashed against my head.
“Uh, no,” I imitated him. “I like it on you.”
“Oh on me,” he drawled. “Should’ve said so.”
I rolled my eyes, “You’re ridiculous.”
He chewed his lip, as if about to seriously debate that statement. But he only replied with, “Mmm, okay.” I pulled the hat off and slammed it on him. “Not the hair!” he groaned, fixing the accessory.
A laugh escaped me. “You’ll live.” My eyes wandered over his shoulder, as I realized people began shuffling their way up the stairs and out of the basement. “Everyone’s going up,” I pointed out.
“I’ll be the last one,” he shrugged.
“You’ll be late, that’s not really a good look.”
“According to you, I am the good look, so I have that covered.”
I snorted, “I never said that.”
He grinned. “No?”
“I said I liked the hat.”
“I feel like you’re lying.”
“I’m not!”
“Okay well,” a smirk pulled at his lip. “You tell me the truth, and I’ll share my secret.”
I watched as Joyce, the final party member, escaped up the stairs. I bit my lip, suppressing a smile. “Fine. I… Might love that hat.” I raised my eyebrows, voice turning low. “What’s your secret Harrington?”
I barely finished the sentence before his lips found mine. A noise of surprise escaped me, but it quickly became lost in the reveling of him against me. I took a breath, barely parting from him. “I take it back,” I mumbled. “I adore that hat.”
His hands latched around my waist as if those simple words awakened something deeper in him. He pulled me against him, my legs wrapped around him, as his mouth devoured me, finding every spare inch of my skin. It had been far, far too long since we had experienced a moment like this.

I hung the dish towel on the oven handle, finishing the last of the chores for the day. I leaned against the counter, watching Vash gobble down a plate of homemade food at the kitchen table. I couldn’t blame him, it had probably been his first since the last time he visited. He dropped by every few weeks, give or take, but it wouldn’t be for long, a couple days at the most. He claimed it was for my safety, to not attract more attention to my small, city home than need be. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t long for him during the long stretches he was away. But this was the routine of our relationship after all, and I knew my desire for the protection of the city satisfied us both. For him, it ensured my safety, away from his nomadic life of turmoil. For me, I simply had no desire to pursue his lifestyle. Until lately, that was.
I clapped my hands together dramatically, snagging Vash’s attention from his food. “Sooo,” I grinned, “I have an idea, but you might not like it.”
He gave a cute smile, “That’s reassuring.”
“What if…” I paused dramatically, “We tried something different, and I tagged along with you and crew?”
Nothing in the world could describe the flabbergasted look on his face. His hand dropped the fork to the plate with a clang. “HEH?”
“Just for a little bit!” I clarified, “A few weeks maybe?”
He gave a nervous chuckle, “That’s not a good idea, Mayfly, really it's not. It’s pretty high-risk out there.”
“Well I know that,” I drawled.
He picked up his fork again, fidgeting with the remaining food. I see the gears turning inside his plant brain as he struggled against his people-pleasing side, “Didn’t we make a deal? That if we’re together then you’d stay outta danger?”
“That was forever ago.”
“It’s still a deal…”
I waved him away, shoving down the guilt I felt at dismissing him, “Well, what if we just tried? I’m sure the crew could make room for me.”
He shifted in the kitchen chair and rubbed the back of his neck, “It’s too dangerous for you.”
“But you’d protect me?”
“Of course I would-”
“Then it’s easy, right?” I tilted my head, trying to appear nonchalant so this didn’t turn into a full blown argument.
“If you’re in danger and I made a mistake…” He trailed off, leaving the rest unspoken.
“Well just don’t make a mistake. Or I could just stay away from the fighting.”
But his next words confirmed my gut-feeling. “It’s not that simple.”
I sighed, crossing my arms, “I know, but could we at least try something?”
He tugged at his metal fingers anxiously, dodging the question with his own, “Where’s this coming from anyway?”
I glanced away, realizing he deserved to know, but embarrassed to say. I began with a lie,“I can’t stand being cooped up in this city anymore.” But I finished with a truth, “I just wanna spend more time with you. You’re gone for weeks at a time.”
“Well…” he began thoughtfully, “What if I visited more?”
“It’s not the same. I wanna be with you. See your life. Especially the parts I’m missing out on.”
He gave a solemn smile, “You’re sweet, mayfly. But my life isn’t great… Not with death on every corner.”
“Yeah but you still live it. Even if it's hard."
“Because I can handle myself.”
I huffed, “Fine. Then they all do it too.” I threw out a hand in gesture to the other members of his party. “And they get to be with you. It’s not fair,” I mumbled, knowing how pathetic I sounded.
“At least you’re safe, away from everything.”
“Even if I’m not with you?”
He hesitated, as if he hated to confirm my sentence. “Even when you’re not with me,” he parroted, anguish lacing his voice.
“Don’t sound so disappointed,” I muttered, “That’s my thing."
“How can I not be? It’s not fair that you have to wait weeks to see me.”
I swallowed, “Well it's not fair to you either, right?”
He gave a nod, “You know that I’d spend every waking minute with you, if I could.”
“Then why won't you let me!”
“I already told you, it’s not safe. Plus… You’d be a distraction.”
I flashed him a hard glare.
He threw up his hands hurriedly, “A good distraction! A really really awesome distraction!”
“Then teach me how to be more than just a distraction. I know you can at least do that.”
He stayed silent, his gaze flickering downward.
“Vash?”
He lifted his head, “I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“It’s just…” He sighed, and skidded his boot across the tiled floor. This man knew every nervous tick in the book. “It feels wrong. If I tried to teach you. If you joined us. You don’t belong in that world.”
“You think I’m too innocent?”
“Kinda?” he gave a soft smile, “But that’s what I love about you. I’d hate to be the reason you lost that…”
I stuttered out nonsense, trying to respond to his heartfelt words. Eventually, I recovered with a huff. “I get it. Or at least I’m trying to. But you’re out there and you haven’t even lost your innocence. You won’t kill.”
His eyes met mine. He spoke with a slight melancholy tone, trying to shift away from the jitteriness, “Look, I want what’s best for your life. And I want to support you in anything. But currently… those two things don’t overlap.”
“Well- I- Okay, thank you.” Those were the only words I could get out. He definitely knew how to shut me up in situations like these, whether it was intentional or not.
“I’m not messing around,” he spoke gently, “It’s dangerous.”
“I know that!” I retorted, tired of him repeating the same point, no matter how valid.
“Then please understand!”
“I just said I did! And I still think we could make it work!”
“And I told you we probably couldn’t!” he replied desperately, shoving himself to his feet.
“I don’t care!”
“Well I do!” He slammed his metal hand against the table, sending a tremor through the room, “Mayfly, I can’t lose you!”
I froze for a moment, stunned at him. “You shouldn’t have to worry that much…” I muttered.
He paced the distance towards me, standing as close to me as he comfortably could. “How can I not worry? When you’re so so so important to me?” He reached for my hand, gripping it tightly.
I stared up into his dazzling blue eyes. “For once could you not be so nice?” I asked.
He pursed his lips and shook his head, “No.”
My voice lowered. I wanted to ask just once more, “It couldn’t hurt to try? Even if I joined you guys for a little bit?”
“Couldn’t hurt? Didn’t you hear what I said?”
The words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them. “Okay, yeah. I get it. Big whoop. My life is that important. Yeah, not really.”
His gaze wavered, “Please don’t tell me you really believe that.” His hands grasped my upper arms, lightly shaking me.
I chewed my lip, a surge of guilt immediately welling up inside me. “I don’t… I’m sorry.”
His eyes fluttered closed for a moment as he let out a breath of relief. “Don’t scare me like that. It’s not fair.”
“It’s just hard to put things into perspective when I’ve never been out there and I really want to…”
His fingers ran the length of my forearms, before sliding off me. “What changed? You used to love staying in the city.”
“Well…” I let out a deep sigh, “Fine, I’ll say, I guess. Look, even though you’re complaining about it, at least right now you have the luxury of not worrying about me. But you don’t know what it’s like. Waiting week by week, wondering if you'll come back! Not knowing if you’re alive or dead out there!”
Astonishment flickered across his features momentarily. Then, his eyes crinkled into half moons and he radiated a warm smile. His fingertip traced my brow, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “I don't deserve you.”
“You don’t,” I blurted out. He poked my cheek, “Sorry that was mean,” I quickly amended.
He gave a slight laugh, “So that’s what all this is about then?”
I swallowed nervously and nodded, “I really do understand what it’s like to worry. I do it every day. It’s miserable.”
“So miserable you wouldn’t wish it on anyone else?” he asked knowingly.
I paused, realizing the position he put me in.
“I’m sorry,” he went on, “I guess this is what you get for being with the world renowned outlaw, Vash the Stampede… I wish it were different.”
“Me too…”
His arms sneakily wrapped around my waist, tugging me into a hug. The top of my head tucked nicely under his chin. He let out a deep breath, trying to release the tension knotted within him.
“We’re not done with this conversation,” I muttered.
One by one, he reached for my arms and settled them around himself, forcing me further into the hug. “I’m a good procrastinator,” he murmured against me, pressing a kiss into my hair. I couldn’t help but ease into him.
After a few quiet moments of reveling in each other, he spoke again, his voice laced with uncertainty, “What if… You tagged along when we’re around the city?”
My brow furrowed as I pulled away just enough to look him in the eye, “Like, officially joined you guys?”
“Just around here.”
I broke out in a grin, “You mean it?”
“Yeah, but if there’s any danger I’m sending you back here.”
I nodded enthusiastically. “I can work with that!”
He showed a fake pout. Though, it might not have been fake, “I don’t like how excited you are about this.”
I laughed, “Too bad.”
His mouth turned upwards at my happy sound, “But that sounds like a good idea, yeah?”
I bounced on my tiptoes to peck him on the lips, “It’s a great idea.”
He drew in a quick breath. “Hey, I’m gonna need more than that for payment,” he whined.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, leaning in, “Oh yeah?” I whispered against his lips.
“Please?” he murmured, nudging my cheek with his nose.
I smiled. The moment I skimmed his lips, his mouth pressed flush against mine, devouring me tenderly.

I studied the way Nico’s gaze pierced my own. The small height difference of sitting in his lap amused me more than enough, allowing my eyes to trace across his features without growing too shy. “Like what you see?” he asked. With that arrogant tone, I didn’t need to see his smirk to know it was there.
I scrunched my nose, “Maybe. Might not like the one liners that come with him.”
He cast me a knowing look, and I smiled, resting my forehead against his. “Got this problem,” he murmured, “Kinda love you too damn much.” His hands rested on my thighs, tracing his thumb across my skin.
I gave a sweet laugh, “Sounds like a tough problem.”
His dark eyes lit up at the sound, “Yup, follows me everywhere I go.”
“Well,” I sat back, suppressing a grin, “I got my own problem. You’re just…”
“Just..?”
I reached up a hand, and gently traced my finger across his fluffy brow, “You’re eyes…” I began adoringly.
“That’s my eyebrow,” he pointed out.
“Shut up,” I whispered, wanting to continue.
“Make me.”
My mouth turned up. I shoved a finger to his lips, “Shh!” I brought my hand back up, ignoring the glint in his eye. I adopted the loving tone again and ran my thumb across his high cheekbone. “Your cheeks…” As I moved down to his mouth, my touch fluttered across his skin almost reverently. “Your lips…” All of my fingertips skimmed his soft lips, as if needing the most amount of contact.
Suddenly, his teeth showed, snatching my fingers in a gentle bite. I jumped, snapping my hand away. I threw him a slight glare and blew a stream of air in his face in retaliation. But the giggles spilling from my mouth forced me to stop.
He let out a deep, genuine laugh. “So, what am I?” He gave my thigh a squeeze, urging an answer.
I shrugged, feigning defeat, “You’re just too pretty.”
His eyebrows raised in mild surprise, “Pretty?”
“Yeah.” I showed a deep smile, “Pretty boy.” I dipped my head, playfully nudging his nose with my own.
His breath skittered across my face as he let out a low laugh. His lips caught my own, easing a slow kiss into me. He found my cheek and nuzzled me, letting his slight scruff scratch my skin. “‘M gonna keep you,” he mumbled.

I peeked into the kitchen, expecting an empty room as I journeyed to grab a late night snack. However, slouched against a chair, sat my lover, Sanji. His head leaned back, eyes closed as he stared up at the ceiling. His legs spread out below him, underneath the table, and a small trail of smoke escaping from his lips.
I stepped into the area, “Heyyy.”
He piqued up at my presence, letting the hand holding his cigarette fall to his side. He showed a smile, “Hey love.”
I walked up behind him. “How’s our cook?” I asked, gazing into his dark eyes.
“Better now that you’re here,” he replied contently. I gently brushed his hair out of his eyes, letting my fingers skim across his forehead. He closed his eyes at the touch, relishing in it. He let out a low hum of enjoyment. I smiled and leaned down, pressing a kiss to his forehead. My lips lingered on his skin, tracing his temple and down to his ear. “I love you,” I whispered softly.
His eyes flew open. I grinned as he snapped his head up, almost stumbling out of his chair to face me, dropping his burnt cigarette in the process. He cupped my face with his hands, the temperature of them burning hot against my skin. “Say that again,” he pleaded, almost whispering.
I rested a hand against one of his, “I love you-”
The moment I finished I was cut off by his lips capturing mine. His mouth moved against mine somewhere in between soft and passionate. He pressed his forehead against mine, letting his eyes close. “Let me hear it just one more time.”
I smiled, closing the small gap between us. My lips lingered against his, gently brushing against them with each word. “I…” I began slowly, “Love…” He let out a low sound, letting his hands fall. He caressed my sides carefully, letting his hands skim across my skin. I shuddered, realizing we were both teasing each other. He kept me pinned to him, wrapping his arms around my waist. “You.” I breathed. He dove for my lips, pressing them feverishly to mine. If it were possible to fall for this man any more, I did at that moment.
We pulled apart after a long heated moment. His lips glistened with the substance of our mouths, as did mine. “Oh to kiss the lips that spoke those words,” he whispered, letting his hot breath skitter across my skin. "I love you even more."

I bolted upright in my bed, letting out heavy pants as I felt chills go down my body. My entire figure was shaking, but I couldn’t help it. These dreams were always too real, too lifelike. I glanced around the room, shared with Robin and Nami, to make sure I hadn’t woken them up. As soon as I confirmed they were asleep, I tiptoed out of my bed, curling my arms around myself, to protect me from the cold, and from any nightmarish zombies that could spring out at any moment. Despite knowing they weren’t real, I couldn’t shake the terrifying feeling that coursed through me. I quickly made my way down the hall, hoping my lover, Sanji, was occupying the kitchen, and that this journey wasn't for nothing.
I reached my destination perhaps a bit too quickly than I should’ve, but the nightmarish zombies had only spurred me on. I gently opened the door, afraid to awaken him should he be sleeping at the table. The view of the kitchen spread out before me. He certainly was at the table, but no more asleep than I was. His legs were spread out as he slouched over the piece of wood, one hand holding a cigarette just centimeters from his mouth.
He immediately perked up when he saw me, eyes scanning my body to take in my disheveled state. It didn’t take him long to put the pieces together. After all, while this may have been the first time I sought his presence after a nightmare, he knew I had been dealing with them ever since we left the zombie island.
His face morphed into concern, but I beat him to his words. “Can you… Hold me?” I asked in a hoarse whisper, my wavering voice giving away how shaken I was. Despite asking the question, I was already shuffling towards him.
“Mellorine, do you even need to ask?” He quickly extinguished his cigarette and turned his chair, opening his arms for me.
I silently straddled myself in his lap, molding my chest against his. I hugged him tightly, burying my face against his neck. My breaths fluttered across his neck, bouncing back to warm my face. I answered sleepily and somewhat incoherently, “Yeah, because you’re a zombie…”
His hands gently found their way under my shirt, skimming every inch of my bare waist. His warm fingers caressed my hips, nearly sending a chill through me, before settling his arms comfortably around me, and holding me tight. As he eased into my hold, I could practically see the fear melting off of me, being replaced by something much more warm. I could feel him burning with questions, especially since he wasn’t normally this quiet when comforting me. But I couldn't be more thankful as his lack of conversation allowed me to slowly fall asleep. My lips twitched against his neck, despite the fear I had felt only moments ago. How observant this man was.
“I should really hope not…” He murmured. I heard the click of his lighter flaming another cigarette, just moments before succumbing to sleep.

And so the cycle began. I awoke, terrified out of my skin. I found Sanji’s presence. I slept through the night.
After about 4 consecutive days of this, the effects of my endeavors were beginning to make themselves known. Specifically through the darkened, sleep-deprived eyes of Sanji. Every night, this man had ensured he stayed awake until I found him. And even then, would only allow himself to sleep in brief increments, checking on me occasionally. Despite that, I had felt increasingly guilty that I only realized this after Franky had said something at breakfast this morning, and that I hadn’t figured it out myself.
We had all made our way to the kitchen per usual. Breakfast was an interesting meal, as there wasn’t a set time due to everyone’s sleep schedules. However, due to my nightmares, I had become increasingly clingy towards Sanji, and would hardly leave his side. This meant I sat through every serving of breakfast the cook would serve for the crew.
About an hour after we had woken up, Franky and Robin made their way to the kitchen, sitting at their respective seats at the table.
“Morning guys,” I yawned.
Robin gave a small smile, “Morning.”
Franky gave a silent large wave as he ran a hand down his tired face.
Sanji whisked by, carrying two dishes that he dramatically placed before them. “For the beautiful lady, and the robot.”
“Ahh,” Franky began, practically salivating at the food, “Looking SUPER as always!” Whatever tiredness there was before, seemed to have been instantly dispelled at the sight of food.
Sanji found his way back to my side at the bar. We faced the other crew members at the table and I cracked a smile at Franky’s enthusiasm over food.
Sanji leaned against the bar, “The captain’s favorite is on the menu today,” he replied.
Robin took a bite, “Shouldn’t you call him before the food’s gone then?” she hummed.
“That idiot’s always stealing food. It’s on him if he’s late,” replied the blonde with a yawn.
“Would you save the food if I was the late one?” I asked teasingly, simply wanting a flirty response in that moment.
Before Sanji could reply, however, the blue-haired man beat him too it. “As if you would be late. You’re practically machine-welded to the side of that man.”
“Well, he’s like my personal therapist. So…” I trailed off.
Franky slurped his food, “Is he your therapist at night too?” He said this so matter-of-factly that I almost didn't pick up on the underlying message he sent.
I blinked, “Wha-”
Sanji crossed his legs, his head now resting on his shoulder with his eyes closed. Had he not spoken I would've thought he was asleep. “She has nightmares, cyborg. Get off her case.”
I bit my lip, why did both of them sound almost irritated right now?
Franky raised an eyebrow at him, “Well in that case maybe she gets a pass.”
“Is there something going on?” I spoke up.
The robot-man looked up at me from eating another spoonful. “You’re running him dry. Don’t you see how exhausted that man is?”
Sanji sat upright, repositioning himself in his seat as if he had just woken up. He let out a yawn, “Don’t listen to him, Mellorine. Nothing you’re doing is wrong.”
I glanced at the blonde. As if my eyes had finally been opened, I took in just how exhausted his man looked. The overly-dark circles under his eyes, the disheveled hair, the fact that he had been wearing the same outfit for almost two days straight. I gulped, “Sanji have you been getting any sleep…?”
He nodded and let out a hum, but not before letting out a long yawn. “I wouldn’t mind a quick nap though.”
I turned to Robin, who had a knowing look on her face. “I’m surprised you didn’t realize it, but... No offense Sanji, but you've been less and less yourself the past couple of days. You need your sleep.”
I reached for his hand, gently wrapping his fingers in between his, “Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked quietly, guilt running through me.
He faced me, trying to blink away his exhaustion, but the simple fact that he didn’t respond to Robin’s allegation spoke more than words. “Who says they’re right? A man should protect his woman at night. Even from fake foes.”
I shook my head, “Sanji, you need your sleep.”
“Stubborn moron,” Franky muttered. But despite his choice of vocabulary, it was clear that he had begun this conversation out of concern for the man.
And with that, I had made the terrifying decision to conquer my fears by myself, and not let my nightmares interfere with him ever again. I had purposefully spent most of the day away from him, trying to silently tell him that he needed his sleep, and trying to decrease my own clingyness. I spent most of the day with Luffy, playing random games to pass the time, or simply keeping him company.
Around lunch time was the first time I ran into Sanji again. The meal was served later than usual, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it was due to his sleep deprivation. While everyone was chowing down on their food at the table, I slipped towards the counter, where Sanji was fashioning a number of fancy drinks. I leaned my back against the counter, watching as his fingers expertly added perfect amounts of syrup and juice to each glass.
“I was wondering when you’d show up,” he said. His voice was gruffer than usual, a tone he very rarely used with me. But the brief flick of his eyes towards me spoke a different story, like he had actually missed my company over just a few hours.. The dark circles under his eyes hadn’t lessened in the slightest. I had to physical resist the urge to grab hold of him and show him to bed.
“Did you not get any rest?” I asked, somewhat concerned.
“Mellorine, I already told you, I’m fine,” he replied firmly.
My brow furrowed, watching as mixed each glass, “Um, sure. I don’t want to be blunt but… You look awful.”
A testy tone entered his voice, “And there’s things that need to be done, lunch doesn’t cook itself.”
I huffed, “It did not take you four hours to make lunch.”
He scoffed, “Maybe it does when I’m busy at night dealing with more important matters.”
“Sanji, I know you want to help me with my nightmares, but if it’s impacting you this badly-”
His jaw flexed “I’ve helped you through every night, and now you’re acting like you barely appreciate it!”
I blinked at his outburst, “I really do appreciate it, but this isn’t about me. You’ve had your turn to help me, and now you deserve a break.”
“Like you can take a break on relationship things.”
I sighed, “I really appreciate the chivalry, I really do. But at this point, you have to draw the line.”
He set both hands on the counter and flashed me a glare, but one that spoke of exhaustion more than actual anger, “Is there anything else you’d like me to put a break on then, Mademoiselle,” he threw out heatedly.
I shook my head, knowing it was pointless to have this conversation when he was this exhausted. I reached for his closest hand, lifting his fingers off the counter before entwining mine between his. Both of our gazes were enraptured by the simple physical contact. I gave his hand a squeeze, somewhat stupidly hoping if he took a second to process the conversation then he would see that he needed sleep.
Eventually, his eyes flicked back towards mine, but there was little emotion behind them. He pulled his hand out of my hold, somewhat rougher than usual. “I need my hands for cooking,” he said distantly.
I clenched my teeth. “Guess you need them for your stupid pride, too,” I threw back. I shouldered my way past him, ignoring the glances the rest of the strawhats threw at me while I exited the kitchen. The only comment I actually made out was a confused “Yo ho ho…?” from Brook.
I didn’t see Sanji the rest of the day. It wasn’t a petty effort to get back at him for the argument, but more of a way to shout to him that he needed sleep. But even with that, I went to bed that night silently hoping the argument would work itself out tomorrow.

Hours later, after another horrendous nightmare and very well into the depths of night, I found myself walking along the deck of the Sunny. By force of habit I was walking towards the kitchen, but I knew that wasn't a wise choice. If Sanji was there, I couldn’t make him suffer another sleepless night, and if he wasn’t, I didn’t want to fall asleep there, only for him to find me and feel regretting not being there for me.
Instead, I made my way to the upper deck on the back of the boat. I leaned against the rail, curling my fingers tightly around the wood to relieve my anxiety. No matter how many times I had these nightmares, my mental response was always the same, and I simply couldn’t escape the terror of it. I let out a deep sigh, trying to calm myself with the gentle noises of the sea, and the wafts of saltiness from the waves. But even with that, I couldn’t shake the feeling that a horrible, mutilated creature from my nightmares was watching me.
I let my chin fall to my chest. My heart burned with desire for Sanji’s comfort; to feel his arms wrap around me, and his soft whispers. My jaw began to tremble as I fully comprehended that I would be facing my horrible, awful, fears all alone tonight. I bit my lip, trying to wrack my brain for anything to latch onto, words that Sanji used to comfort me. A joke Usopp had made to cheer me up. An adorable act Chopper had done while he healed me. Or… I remembered the words Brook had once said when he tried to conquer his own fears. “I hum when I’m frightened, and I like to think it helps.”
I lifted my head, letting the light of the moon shine brightly upon myself, as it peeked out from behind the clouds. I bit my lip, and performed a quick scan of the area, ensuring no one was in hearing range. I took a breath, and let out a singular high-pitched note of the first song that came to my mind- and old sea shanty. A second note followed just as smoothly, and soon the entire song was tumbling out of my lips. The sound of my voice complimenting the night sky beautifully as I sang to the stars. My anxious frown soon lessened as I imagined the whole world to be my audience.
Within minutes, the song came to a close, and I contently leaned against the rail, searching for another song I knew just as well. As my eyes darted across the ocean waters, I realized not a single thought of my night terrors occupied my mind. I let out a small smile, but that thought brought me back full circle to my original thoughts of monsters and zombies. Dark figures that were stalking me- Crawling up to this deck on the outside of the boat- Creeping eerily up the stairs-
I whipped around, terror overtaking me. Before I even had time to process my view, I dropped to the deck, my knees unable to handle the fear of the thing before me. Directly in front of me was a terrifying creature. One that reached unimaginable heights.
“Yo ho ho! What a wonderful voice you have!”
That voice… I blinked, shaking my head to clear my vision. Standing opposite of me, leaning against the other rail, was the one and only skeleton, Brook. I should’ve known it was him. He often roamed the ship at weird times of the night because he rarely ever needed sleep.
“Do you need help?” he asked innocently, scaling the short distance towards me.
Guilt immediately wracked through me for thinking he was a monster. I shook my head in response, my hand reached for my own rail. I heaved myself up, trying to conceal the trembling that shook me from my head to my toes. “I.. I didn’t think anyone else would be awake.”
He stood next to me, and leaned over the railing, just as I had done moments ago. “Oh my, did I scare you?” he asked, with some concern.
I gave a weak smile and copied his position, “Only a bit.”
“I tend to have that effect on people, don’t I? Yo ho ho!”
I stayed silent, the adrenaline rushing through me keeping me from giving me an empathetic response. I wouldn’t be falling asleep anytime soon, that much was certain. “What are you doing out here?” I eventually asked.
“You do have a wonderful voice,” he repeated, giving me a toothy smile.
“Oh, um, thanks,” I said shyly, realizing he had probably heard most of my song.
“Do you sing often?” he asked curiously, seemingly undeterred by my quiet demeanor at the moment.
I shook my head, staring out at the water. Sometimes I forget this man had only been on our crew for a couple of weeks. “No not at all. Sometimes when we have a celebration and the crew makes me sing, but that’s about it.”
“Ahh, you should sing more!” he replied encouragingly.
I shrugged, slightly embarrassed, “I don’t know. It’s not a huge hobby of mine.”
“Well, what got you started singing tonight?”
I dropped my head, letting out a small disbelieving laugh, “Well, this is a little dumb. But it was actually something you said when I first met you.”
I couldn’t watch his expression, but slight silence left me even more embarrassed, “If you weren’t with Sanji I would assume you were in love with me,” he finally replied with awe. His strange, romantic tendencies getting the better of him.
My eyes widened and I jerked my head to look up at him. I gave an awkward laugh, “Oh um, it was actually about facing your fears.”
“Oh?” he questioned.
“Well, you said that you hummed to yourself when you were frightened, and I’ve been dealing with a lot of nightmares lately so… I decided to put my own spin on that idea.”
He let out a low hum, as if testing his own idea, “And did it work?”
“I mean, I’d like to think it did.”
“Would you like to sing again?” he asked simply.
This question caught me off guard, “Uh, I… Why?”
“To help you! I can play my violin if you’d like.” He pushed himself off the rail, and made his way across the deck, where his violin case rested. I hadn’t noticed it there before.
“Well… Only if you play really loudly, then maybe,” I replied.
He took out his violin and played a few practice notes. “Is that loud enough?” he asked warmly.
I nodded hesitantly, a new bubble of anxiety rising in my throat at having to sing in front of someone, “I guess?”
He repeated the notes again, but with more sharpness, increasing their volume.
I gulped, “Yea that works.”
“Why don’t we do the song you just sang?”
I gently hummed, warming my voice again. I let out a breath to calm myself, “Yeah… Let’s do it then.”
“Yo ho ho!” he let out excitedly.
And with that, his violin lit up the night with his expertly played notes. On cue, I joined with my voice, creating a melodic duo that snaked through the length of the boat, and beyond into the sea. We played on and on, our talents colliding in perfect synchronization with each other. When the song came to an eventual close, after many minutes, not a single terrifying thought occupied my mind. A grin stretched across my face as I felt the effects of the song channel through me, elating my mood beyond what it had been all day. Brook beamed at me as he set his violin down.
“That was really good!” I exclaimed.
“Yo ho ho! You’re even better with an accompaniment!” He hopped around the deck, practically dancing with glee.
I let out a small laugh, “You’re not so bad yourself.”
“Another?” he asked excitedly, jumping over to me. He suddenly link one arm around mine and spun me around once, before releasing me.
The action surprised me a bit but I remained my composure. I gave a small stretch as I tried to hold back a yawn, “Surprisingly… I actually want to, but I feel like it’s getting kind of late,” I admitted.
He gave a nod, “Ah, I understand.”
I smiled, “Another time though, definitely.”
He matched my expression, “Thank you for tonight then.”
With that, we had a bit of small talk before I made my way to the sleeping quarters. On my way there I briefly overheard Brook talking to himself. “I haven’t done that in… Many decades,” he said almost sorrowfully.
I frowned, but any thoughts relating to that were quickly overrun at the sight of something else- the kitchen door cracked just enough to reveal a sliver of light from it. A light wave of dread washed over me, had the blonde man stayed awake in the kitchen for me?
I reached the door, hesitating outside the room for a moment. I wanted to check if he was sleeping, but if he wasn’t… I didn’t want to keep him awake more than he needed to be. He needed to sleep. Despite the overwhelming thought that I shouldn’t enter, I did so anyway, and was quite relieved to see the sight before me. Sanji hunched over the table, resting his head on his crossed arms. I gave a small smile. A long-cold cigarette fell from between his fingers, signaling that he had been out for quite some time. While I knew it couldn’t have been the most comfortable, I was relieved he finally was receiving the sleep he deserved.
I glanced around the room as I made my way towards him, trying to eye his suit jacket that so often accompanied him. But a quick scan proved it wasn’t anywhere in the room. Without a second thought, I removed my own jacket and spread it over his shoulders, like a blanket. It may have been two sizes too small for him, but I became satisfied knowing he had some sort of layer over him. He shifted slightly in his sleep, but I continued to tuck it around him. Eventually, my work was done, and he came to a still. I took a step back and admired the sleeping blonde. His features finally earned the peaceful look they deserved after so many sleepless nights. I reached down, and gave him a small peck on his warm cheek, while also removing the cigarette from his hands.
I moved to make my way out of the room, but upon reaching the door I hesitated once again. I looked back at the man, hoping he wouldn’t beat himself up too much in the morning, when he would see the jacket and realize I had been there, but hadn’t woken him. I shook my head. If that happened, then so be it. I shoved through the door, letting it close silently behind me.

The following afternoon greeted me, as I quickly made myself ready for the day. A quick once over of the sleeping areas, told me I had slept far past the morning. And I certainly needed it too, because for the first time in over a week I had gotten the sleep I so desperately needed.
I made my way up to the deck as soon as I had freshened up, and was taken aback by the sight I saw before me. We were docked at a port town, and no one was on deck. In fact, they had probably all gone into town. I blinked, wondering why no one had even thought to leave me a note to inform me. And also a little hurt by the fact that I was now expected to watch over the ship alone.
But just as all these thoughts were hitting me at once, no one other than Prince Charming came walking down the steps of the upper deck. He focused on the cigarette in his mouth, trying to light the thing in the slightly breezy weather. When he reached the deck, he successfully lit it, and shook out his lighter, setting it into his pocket. He finally gave his attention to his surroundings, and immediately our eyes connected, spanning the length of the deck.
Tossed over one forearm was something similar to my jacket. At the sight of me, he reached for it with his free hand, gripping it tightly. He meandered towards me, a million thoughts scrawled onto his face, while I quickly paced the distance towards him.
Half way towards him, I called out, “Were you finally able to sleep?”
We met at the midway point of the deck, with him leaning over the rail. He set my jacket next to him. “I was,” he replied, almost begrudgingly, with a puff of his cigarette. His rosy cheeks and bright eyes confirmed his statement.
I settled to the left of him, keeping my jacket slightly in between us. I nodded, happy that we were both well-rested. Despite that, his closed-off body language spoke more than words, and it was clear that something was bothering him. Considering the course of the past 24 hours, I had a few different guesses.
“I didn’t see you last night,” he remarked. He moved his hand to grip my jacket again, as if that part of me was the only thing reassuring him right now. But it also served as a clear signal to tell me that he knew I had visited him in his sleep.
Out of habit, I reached his hand, but remembering the events that happened yesterday, I shifted my aim, and settled my fingers on his sleeve cuff instead. I gently played with it, running the material back and forth between my fingers. The weight of my single finger burned against the skin of his wrist.
“I thought you knew I didn’t want to bother you,” I finally said, wondering if he still held anything against me from our argument.
He out a puff of his cigarette, “So you bothered Brook instead?” he asked. His voice was low, but not the angry sort. The low that suggested he was trying to mask over whatever pain that idea brought him.
My fingers froze, coming to a still at the left edge of his sleeve. “How…?” I trailed off, not quite sure how to ask what I wanted to. Hadn’t he been asleep for that, after all?
He tilted his head to meet my eyes, “You have a beautiful voice, Mon Cheri,” he spoke quietly.
I opened my mouth to speak, a thousand questions rushing through me, but he beat me to it. He turned his entire body towards me, “It was the things I said yesterday, wasn’t it? That pushed you away...” His brow was creased, like he hated the idea of me confirming his words.
I took a breath, not too surprised he came to that conclusion. “No… Sanji I honestly don’t even care about the things you said. I didn’t bother anyone last night. He just showed up.”
He shook his head, dismissing my explanation, “I shouldn’t have said what I said,” he paused, “I’m sorry, my love. My hands are for far more than cooking.” As if to prove his point, he reached to grab my hands in his. “They’re for loving you. They’re for caring for you. For protecting you.” He reached up to caress my hair, “For stroking your hair, and holding you. Even when you have nightmares,” he added.
I stood there, completely starstruck by his words, a smile slowly spread across my face with the more he spoke, growing larger with each word. “I um…” Not having the words to convey my feelings, I reached my arms around his neck, pulling him towards me. My eyes briefly flicked to his lips, before I leaned into him. Just as our lips skimmed each other my mouth parted. I whispered against him “I love you too.” My lips brushing against his as I spoke.
His shudders, yearning for my lips. “Don’t do that,” he warned quietly, his warm breath scattering across my face. He arms reached around my hips, squeezing me against him to show his affection. A smile briefly flickered across me, before he shoved his lips onto mine, devouring me in every way he craved. Both of us were enraptured in each other’s burning romance, after having no contact for the past day.
Eventually, we pulled away, his hands instantly reaching for my cheeks to keep me from retreating too far. He gazed into my eyes, “I adore you, Mon Cheri.”
My cheeks heated at his intensity, something that hadn’t happened in a while. I placed my hands over his, rubbing my thumb across his knuckles. With my other hand, I tilted his hand, pressing a kiss to his palm. “Are your hands for kissing too?” I asked fervently.
“For anything you could ever need,” he replied.
I showed a sly smile, “What a tempting offer.”
He raised his eyebrows, an intrigued smile on his face as if waiting for me to continue that thought.
But I did nothing of the sort, and instead turned the conversation to another matter. I let his hands fall to his sides, and leaned my back against the rail. “So… Do you always get jealous of talking skeletons?” I asked coyly.
The smile on his face faltered slightly, and I had to bite my tongue from laughing at his semi-defeated expression. He parted his lips slightly, taking a moment to form his response. He smoothly replied with, “I’d like to think a man would never question his lady’s loyalty.”
I pursed my lips in amusement, “Oh? Well, liking to and actually doing it are two different things.”
He leaned his arms against the rail, facing the sea as he turned to look at me. He swiftly lit another cigarette, trying to hide his own smile behind it now that he picked up on my humorous intent behind my words. “It’s the thought that counts.”
I playfully elbowed him in the ribs, “Not sure that thought was there in the first place.”
He let out a puff of smoke, taking my physical jab without a problem, “Can you blame me?”
“He’s a skeleton.”
He eyed me up and down, “You have one too. And a hot one at that,” he smirked.
I rolled my eyes, “Whatever.”
He let out a laugh, letting our playful banter continue through much of the rest of the afternoon.

How long it takes: a few months cuz he's lovey dovey like that
This man would probably forget about every other anniversary except THIS specific one. He was absolutely determined to make your six month anniversary the night he said I love you, and had been planning it for a while. But somewhere along the road, he might’ve had a little accident…
You burst through the door to Sabo’s office, using whatever energy you had left. You took a few steps into the area, before dramatically bowing. “Mission accomplished,” you announced. A smile lopsided from your tiredness stretched across your face. It was a small area, with a desk in the back-center of the room, just in front of a window. The very man you had hoped to see, sat in his chair with his nose buried in some papers. His boots were propped up on the desk, and from the look of it, he had been pretty bored before you dramatically showed up.
Sabo snapped his papers down. His face lit up at your arrival. “You’re back,” he declared. He bolted to his feet, quickly closing the distance between you two. He placed both hands on your shoulders, eyes boring into yours. He tried to feign nonchalance and confidence, but couldn’t conceal the relief behind them, as he tried to decipher what had happened to you. “Are you alright? What took so long? This mission wasn’t supposed to-”
You slapped a hand over his mouth, letting out a small laugh, “Is someone worried about me?” you asked teasingly.
His hand reached for your wrist, tugging your hand away. He let out a gasp for air when he was free. He waved you away, “No, of course not,” he said dramatically, but his demeanor said otherwise.
You smiled, “But yeah… Some things went south half way through, and it took a little longer than expected to get it sorted out. It’s all finished now, though.”
He side-eyed you like a child, “It took an extra week,” he noted. You thought you almost caught a slight pout on his lips.
“I know, I know,” you let out a sigh and reached your fingers around the hem of your shirt, tugging it up to reveal your stomach. “This is what caused the setback.” A length of faded bandage was wrapped around your midsection, not looking the most pretty.
He let out a sympathetic hiss at the sight and crouched to take a closer look. He trailed a single finger gently down the layers of medical wrap. “Bullet wound or stab wound?” he asked.
“Bullet. It skimmed me.” Both of you were used to injuries like this by now, so seeing something like this was unsurprising.
He nodded. Reaching forward, he held you by the hips, and pressed a careful kiss to the wound. Despite not being able to feel it through the fabric, a shiver went down your spine. He pushed himself to his feet, “You should get that checked out.”
“Yea, I will.” Your tone changed slightly, “Just wanted to update you on my mission status first, commander,” you teased.
“Oh is that all?” he laughed, raising his eyebrows.
You shrugged, a witty comment on the tip of your tongue. But your attention immediately became distracted by something else. “Take this off, please.” You reached for his top hat, tossing it to the side like a frisbee. You smiled as his fluffy golden hair shone back at you.
He watched it fall to the floor, “It would’ve looked better on you…” he murmured satirically.
You scrunched your nose, “That’s too cheesy.”
His gaze knowingly turned back to you, “Is it?” His arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you into him. Your eyes flicked to his lips, the quickly-formed romantic tension all too palpable. But before either of you could make a move, his grip slightly tightened around your waist, forcing a small “Oww,” to escape your mouth. You cringed at the unexpected wave pain that bloomed through your abdomen.
He looked at you with wide and frantic eyes, clearly already forgetting about your injury, “Sorryyy.” He quickly released you, letting his hands drop to his side. “Maybe let’s go see the doctor… Like, now.” He kept his tone even, but despite that, it wasn’t hard to tell that there was a growing sense of worrying creeping through him.
You let out a slight laugh, “You sure you’re not worried about me?”
He let out a huff and gripped your shoulders again. His anxiety making itself known for the first time. He began speaking in a chaotic rush, “Ok, yes I’m worried about you. I’ve been worried. You were a week late. You come back with a hole in you that isn’t supposed to be there. You look awf- Not that great. I love you so much, how could I not be worried about you?!”
You froze. “You- You what?”
He repeated himself firmly, “How could I-” He stopped himself. His eyes went wide with realization. He scanned your face, a new form of anxiety taking effect. “You didn’t hear that,” he stated, as if trying to convince you. His hands moved to grip your upper arms. He shook you back and forth frantically, “Did you go deaf just then by any chance?”
Your body lolled back and forth in his grasp. “Woooah.” Upon hearing you make a noise, he stopped. Your eyes felt like they had turned to swirlies from dizziness. He stared at you, waiting for you to respond. “Uh, what?” you asked, more confused than anything. But his love confession continued to echo through your ears.
He let out a gruff sigh, his entire demeanor suddenly changing. He carefully pulled you into him again, pressing your body against his. He buried his face into your hair, “I screwed up,” he mumbled.
You stayed still, arms pinned to your sides. He had hugged you a thousand times before, but you couldn’t help the blush that spread through you as you internalized his words. Before you knew it, he pulled away, and began explaining himself. His gaze flicked from the floor to your eyes, almost defeatedly. “I was gonna do something for our six month anniversary. I had it all planned out, and I was gonna give you this little thing…”
He stepped away, making his way to the far side of his desk. Upon shuffling through a drawer or two, he held up a small black box. He glanced at it, and then back at you, as if trying to restabilize himself. “I was gonna give you this and tell you… I… Love you.” The frown that had begun tugging at his lips cautiously fluttered into a nervous smile, his eyes sparkling with a newfound hope.
Your mouth dropped open. For a moment you didn’t speak. After realizing you should say something, you stuttered out, “W-what do I even say to that?! I love you too?!”
His face burst into the biggest grin you had ever seen on him, “That works.” He tried in vain to speak casually, but the excitement in his voice gave himself away. He tossed the box up, dramatically swiping it out of the air. He stepped back around his desk, settling himself near the front. He sat on the edge of the piece of wood, fiddling with the box. You made your way towards him, a blush blazing across your face. You kept silent, not knowing what to say.
His eyes flicked up to yours, before dropping back down to the thing in hand. He popped it open, displaying a single glimmering ring. “This… Is a token ring,” he began, plucking it out of its cushioned home. He reached for you, “Hand,” he requested. You held out your right hand, trying to keep the slight shaking steady. He looked up at you with a cute smile, “Other hand.”
“Oh,” you breathed, holding out your left hand. He gently slipped the ring onto your finger, his touch blazing against your skin. The metal shone back up at you, the dainty thing laced with an intricate pattern of jewels. He brought your hand to his lips, pressing a long kiss to it. The act sent a shiver of warmth through you.
He took a breath, glancing up at you again. “And soo… It means you’re gonna be mine forever and ever and ever,” he grinned with an adorable laugh. He spun you around quickly, wrapping his arms around your midsection. He pulled you into him, keeping your back pinned to his chest, despite the pain. He buried his face into your shoulder, “And it means I love you too.”
You let out a laugh, an elated feeling ballooning in your chest. Your hand reached behind you, tangling itself in his locks of hair. Your fingers ran back and forth over his head. “You were gonna plan all of that out? You didn’t have to do all that…” you murmured, still stunned from the whole thing.
“I know cuz I ended up screwing it all up anyway,” he groaned dramatically. The way his lips tugged into a smile against your skin, suggested he felt differently though.
“I’m glad you did it this way,” you spoke quietly, letting your head rest against his.
He perked up, knocking your head away, “Really?”
You nodded, a smile creeping across your face, “Because seeing you like this is so much cuter.”
He laughed and pressed a messy kiss to your cheek. He pushed you up, standing up with you. “Let’s go get you checked out now,” he said, changing the conversation as he stepped around you.
You chuckled, “Waaaait,” you called, grasping his hand before he could get any farther. He let himself be turned back towards you, a cheeky smile on his face. “I love you too,” you said simply with a shrug.
Using your own move against you, he tugged on your hand, sending you towards him. A moment later, your lips crashed into his. After a passionate moment, he pulled away, breathing heavily. “Maybe screwing it up was worth it,” he spoke, the intimate moment solidifying everything you too shared for each other.
saying "i love you" - corazon x you
in the Donquixote house, there’s no time for romance. meaning it takes quite the upheaval for corazon to say “I love you” (aka how long does it take for him to say it?)

How long it takes: literally says it to establish the relationship, lil bby
Doflamingo was sending you on a suicide mission. You stood, petrified, in one of the many storage rooms in the Donquixote house. This particular place had been one you used countless times. Whether it was to escape from the pressures of your life as a member of the Donquixote family, overcome anxious breakdowns, or participate in thoughtful conversation with someone you had become very fond of, Donquixote Corazon.
Your heart pounded within you, each thump sending another wave of gut-wrenching terror through you. You knew Doffy had planned this on purpose- giving you a mission that would most likely end in your death. He gave you a punishment for the horrible mistake you had made on your last mission. One that had set back the work of the entire family by l weeks.
Your blank eyes stared at the wooden door directly across the room, desperately waiting for that certain man to show up. You knew he would find his way here eventually; he always did. But it was a matter of how long until the awful news reached him. You didn’t even have the energy to cry, the shock of it all sending your body into survival mode instead. Your mind was a battlefield, one half trying to find acceptance in the reality of it, and the other flicking through countless ways to not end up as a sacrifice.
The door slammed open, thudding against the stone wall with enough force that it closed on itself. The shock of it brought forth no reaction from you. Your eyes flickered up to the face of the man who entered- Corazon. A look of anger scrawled across his face, clearly indicating he had heard the news. It instantly changed to one of solemn concern when he took in the sight of your petrified self. Without hesitation, he paced towards you, black feathered cloak billowing behind him.
As if his movement flipped a switch inside of you, you broke free from your frozen state, and took three staggering steps towards him. He fell to his knees just before you, letting you fall into his grasp. His embrace crushed you against him. For the first time since your interaction with Doffy, you felt your breaths quicken, your adrenaline spike, and the utter fear of it all finally hit you like a brick. You buried your head into the feathers on his shoulder, letting out a harsh sob. His arms tightened around you, as if trying to absorb your terror.
After a few long moments of silence, you let out a shaky breath. “Say something,” you begged, trying in vain to keep your voice steady.
He nodded, realizing that he was so overcome with emotion that he forgot to speak. “Silent,” he whispered, snapping his fingers. A purple veil arched over the room, covering the area like a dome. You pulled away from him, but kept close enough to instantly be in his arms again. A small frown donned your face. “It’s a suicide mission…” you trailed off.
“My brother…” he began darkly, sounding like he was about to spew a string of threats. He stared over your shoulder, the horrible things he wanted to do to Doflamingo flashing through his mind. He tensed his jaw, and darted his eyes back to you, forcing himself back to reality. “I refuse to let him hurt you,” he declared.
You shook your head, eyes burning as you tried to keep the tears at bay. “No… I don’t want you to get in trouble. That’s the last thing I need.”
He frowned, “That should be the least of our problems.”
You pursed your lips, not in the best state of mind to argue. You stared at the ground beneath you as your eyes misted over, urging you to break down. You shoved your face into your hands, sobs wracking through you. Cora’s eyes widened, his expression turning to one of partial surprise. His large hands reached for yours, gently pulling them away from your face. He cupped your face, tilting your head up. Your breaths labored as you stared at him with bloodshot eyes, a number of watery tears streaming down your face. He opened his mouth in vain, knowing words would do little to help. He stopped himself when you took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t wanna cry…” You sniffled, “Because one time you said that you’d cry if someone else cries. So if I cry, then you’ll cry, and-” You cut yourself off, taking in his expression.
His eyes softened and a smile slowly turned his lips up. You couldn't help but note how angelic he looked compared to your deranged state. He shook his head, taking his own turn to stare at the ground. “I only cry over people I love,” he spoke, his voice catching in his throat at the end of his sentence. He choked out a loud cough, trying to cover it over.
You only watched him silence, frozen-still by the thousands of questions that simple statement caused. He unclasped his cloak, pushing himself to his feet in one fluid motion. “I’m gonna talk to Doffy,” he stated.
Before you could react, your entire vision was bathed in black. You coughed as a feather found its way into your mouth. He seemingly had dropped his cloak onto you, the weight and size of it now enveloping you. You shoved the fluffy feathers out of your face in confusion. Once your view was clear, you watched as Cora reached the door. He opened it carefully.
“Wait-!” you called, suddenly realizing the danger of having him speak to Doffy about your case. He hesitated for only a moment, but stepped through the door, outside of the silencing barrier.
You let out a saddened noise, but quieted as you saw him move.
He slowly turned to face you, a fragile smile stretched across his face. His hand threw up a peace sign as two thin tears fell down his cheeks. You stood starstruck as his lips moved to mouth three words. “I love you.” Being outside the barrier, the sound of them never graced your ears. The door closed behind him, his cloak dramatically falling from your shoulders in response. Your eyes went as wide as saucers as your heart thumped from inside of you.
Those simple words left you with more questions than before. You both knew you cared for each other. And every interaction you had with him made you wonder if there was something more there. The simple touch of his hand brushing yours. The way his eyes always found yours in the middle of a family meeting. The way he would go out of his way to create an opportunity to speak to you. All of these things and more had you questioning him- wondering if that was simply his caring side, or if there was something more to it. You let out a sigh, refusing to acknowledge the blush that covered your cheeks as you contemplated all of these things.
Before you realized how much time had passed, the door turned open again, revealing the man of the hour. You stayed quiet, nervousness creeping through you at the idea that Doffy had done something to him. But you reminded yourself that the fact that he was in the room with you was a good sign. He fell against the wood, slumping to the ground. He thumped his head against the door, and let out a deep breath that shuddered through him. “It was a test to prove your loyalty,” he announced, relief dripping from his words. “He’s gonna tell you formally in a few days.”
A crooked smile popped onto your face, the words hitting you like a truck. Bubbly laughter of your remnant nervousness escaped your mouth as you fell backwards onto his cloak, the black feathers billowing around you. “Wow…” you whispered. His words alleviated nearly all the fear you had felt only minutes ago. You stayed like this for some moments, simply relishing in the feeling of safety. In the background, you heard the click of Cora’s lighter as he lit a fresh cigarette.
After a bit, you forced yourself to your feet. You slowly closed the distance between the two of you, hoping your expression conveyed everything you felt. When you neared him, he pulled the cig from his mouth, rubbing it against the stone floor to extinguish it.
You bent before him slightly, bringing up your hands to cup his face. “Thank you…” you murmured. You gently rested your forehead against his, letting your eyes close.
He nodded against you, letting out a low hum in response, the scent of his cigarette mixing with whatever cologne he used. After a moment you pulled away, a questioning look in your eyes. “What did… What did you say earlier? Outside the barrier?” you asked, trying in vain to keep the knowing tone out of your voice.
He hesitated, a lifetime of feelings flashing behind his eyes. He pulled off his fabric hat, scrunching it in his hands. Your eyes widened, his golden hair making his features even more dazzling. “Doesn’t matter…” he spoke quietly, “I think my emotions got the better of-”
“I love you too,” you cut him off abruptly, a small smile teasing at your lips. Before he had the chance to react, you pressed a quick kiss to his forehead. Your heartbeat pounded inside of you as you felt blood rush to your head.
He stared at you in shock, his mouth parting slightly. You swallowed, carefully watching him as a thousand doubts rushed through your mind. This moment would determine your relationship to him for a long time. Determine whether or not all those hints were true. Whether those words were what you really thought. Or if the entire thing was a platonic delusion.
The corner of his mouth turned upwards the smallest amount. “Yeah, I love you,” he announced with confidence. A grin stretched farther across his face as he made the declaration.
He wrapped both arms around your waist, pulling you towards him. You made a noise of surprise, your own smile erupting across your lips. He stopped you just inches from his face. “Just don’t tell Doffy,” he whispered, a slight tease on his words. He closed the space between you, gently capturing your lips in his. You melted into him, letting the intimate moment stretch on. Though it ended all too soon for your liking.
As you pulled away, you refrained from making a sad face, not wanting to come off as too strong. Your eyes cautiously trailed up to his hair, taking it in for the second time. You gently stroked your hands through it, letting the fluffy locks cascade every which way through your fingers. Your eyes flicked down to see him gazing up at you fondly, like he had witnessed a shooting star. “I won't tell Doffy,” you laughed softly.
saying "i love you" - zoro x you

How long it took: ehhh a long time
Did the thought occur to him to say “I love you”? Yes, briefly. Did he actually have the emotional energy, or care enough, to make it a big deal? No. To him, they were just words. But he also understood how meaningful they could be. Because of that, he was also slightly scared of the commitment that came with saying it.
“Lemme join.” The gruff voice of your green-headed boyfriend reached your ears. His boot nudged your legs splayed out in front of you. You sat against the rail of the Sunny, near the corner of the deck, trying to nap in a sliver of shade. You lifted your head to look up at him, raising your hand to block the glaring sun from view. He towered over you, seemingly showing no emotion. But it wasn’t hard to see that somewhere behind his tired eyes was a man who wanted your comfort.
A smile slowly stretched across your face as you patted the deck next to you, beckoning him to join. He lowered himself to your side. You closed the small gap between your bodies, pressing your shoulder against his, and resting your forearm on top of his own. The feeling of his bare skin against yours being enough to keep you awake. You rested your head on the top of his shoulder, gently closing your eyes as you both basked in the sun.
“We’re like cats bathing in the sunlight,” you murmured. “Like lovey-dovey cats.”
“Lovey-dovey?” he repeated.
You tilted your head to peer up at him, “We are in a relationship,” you commented slightly teasingly, as if reminding him.
He shook his head, “I know that much,” he muttered.
You let out a small sigh of acknowledgement, gears turning in your head as you tried to understand what had him questioning that simple sentence about cats. A thought struck you. “And…” you trailed off, trying to figure out how to word it.
“And?”
You bit your lip, almost embarrassed to say it, “Well, we can only be lovey-dovey cats if we love each other.” The silly concept disguised your true thoughts on such a deep topic.
He stayed silent, seemingly not wanting to contribute to that topic. But the more time passed, the more you wondered if he just… didn't love you like that. You bit your lip, building up the courage to ask your next question. “Do you…” your voice wavered, “Do you love me?”
Your cheeks blazed with warmth at how stupid it sounded, but you felt like that had been a long-needed question. While both of you were in an established relationship, Zoro had always edged on the more casual side of things. After so many months… You were beginning to question if this was all he wanted. If it was, you weren’t quite sure how you felt about that.
Despite that, the question struck Zoro like a lightning bolt. “Hah? Why wouldn't I?” he asked bluntly. He clenched his jaw slightly, as he contemplated his answer, knowing there was a deeper level of closeness waiting for him as soon as he said those three forbidden words. A smile fluttered onto your face and you settled your head back onto his shoulder. Content with his simple answer. He huffed, speaking bluntly, “Are you asking if I want more of a commitment?”
You froze, the question,m throwing you off guard. You slowly nodded against his shoulder. “If that’s how you want to take it…”
“Is that how you meant it?”
You bit your lip, knowing in your heart the answer was yes. “I- No. Forget about it, it was a dumb question.”
He grunted, “As if anything you ever said was dumb.”
You let out a sigh, pulling yourself away from him. “Fine! Yes, that was how I meant it.” You stared at your hands, now speaking quietly, “But I’d rather not ask a question that I already know the answer to.”
He blinked, somewhat taken aback by your assumption. Another length of silence followed. Confirming your suspicions: he would never want a commitment like that. You huffed, “See, that’s what I meant.” You sighed, almost defeatedly, pushing yourself up to your feet. You looked down at him, “Zoro, I-”
“I don’t know…” he trailed off.
You clenched your jaw, trying to force back the wave of sadness that washed over you.
“...What being in a commitment would mean,” he continued, eyes trailing up to meet yours. “But I want to be with you. Simple.”
Your mouth opened, not quite sure how to take this declaration, but you felt a pressing weight slowly lift off your chest. He cut you off before you could speak. “I want to stay with you,” he clarified, almost mumbling.
A smile stretched across your face, a feeling of triumph ballooning in your chest. “I can work with that.”
He nodded once, and reached for your hand, tugging on it. His voice became gruff again, “Get down here. And no more tough questions. My brain hurts.”
You laughed softly, giving into his pull. You plopped yourself on his lap, your legs tucked comfortably against his. “Yes sir.” He pulled you against him, pressing your chest flush with his. You spoke again, “And for the record, I wanna stay with you too…. Like a lot. If it wasn't obvious.” You buried your head in his shoulder, cringing at how ungraceful that sounded.
He let out a rare laugh, one that resounded through his chest, and through you. “Good,” he said simply. His arms wrapped around your waist, and he gave you a squeeze against him.
You let out a content sigh, finally able to take the nap that you so longed for. You snuggled into him, making yourself comfortable. The minutes passed by slowly, and you teetered on the edge of sleep as you listened to his rhythmic breathing and heartbeat.
Despite this, you were unaware that Zoro kept opening and closing his mouth ever so often, as if he were uncertain of something. After a bit, he pulled back your hair, gently brushing it out of your eyes, his fingertips skimming along your forehead. After confirming that you were asleep, he let out a relieved sigh. He spoke quietly, “I…” The words teetered on the edge of his lips, as if he were testing them out. “I… Yeah, I love you…” His fingers gently brushed your cheek, fluttering over your skin.
The corner of your mouth turned up slightly, making his hand freeze. “I love you too,” you murmured, barely awake.
“You’re supposed to be a sleep, idiot,” he said gruffly. Had you been more awake, you would’ve felt him clench the fabric of your shirt, or witnessed the slight warmth that graced his cheeks. You sleepily hummed in response, not really hearing what he said. He let out a breath, somewhat glad you had heard those words.
saying “i love you” - luffy x you (fem)

How long it takes: 3 months
This boy’s mind is a blank slate. Despite being in a relationship for three months, saying the words “I love you” simply never crossed his mind. He wasn’t afraid of saying it, he just never remembered to. He typically displays his affection through actions and having fun with you instead.
Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper sat around the main table in the kitchen. Dinner had finished a little while ago, and the rest of the crew had moved on to do their own things, leaving the three of them at the table. The area erupted in laughter, their attention entirely focused on Usopp and his shenanigans of imitating people.
The man held a hand to his chin, thinking mischievously. “Sanji…” he murmured, “Aha!” Suddenly his eyes lit up and he planted a fisted hand on his other palm. Instantly he went into acting mode. “Nami-swannnnn! Don’t leave meeee!” the man shouted dramatically, pretending to cover one eye with his hair. “I always need a beautiful lady by my side! Mellorine!”
Luffy and Chopper burst into fits of howling, as Usopp clutched a hand to his heart, almost falling out of his seat from swooning.
“Do Luffy! Do Luffy!” Chopper begged through his cute wheezes, struggling to stay upright in his chair.
Luffy nodded eagerly, “Do me!” he grinned, wanting his own imitation even if it was at the expense of himself.
Usopp immediately went zombie-mode, stretching out his arms and letting his tongue roll out of his mouth. “Meeeeeeat,” he drawled.
Luffy cackled and clapped his hands, “Do another one!”
Usopp looked at him slyly. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around himself, pretending to hug a non-existent person. “I looooove my girlfriend! Mwah Mwah!” He made a deep kissy-face, completely with smooching sound effects. “I love you, I love you I loooove you,” he dragged out.
He peeped one eye open to take in their reactions, his cheeks filling with laughter that he struggled to keep in as he saw Chopper. The little reindeer rolled back and forth on the floor, hollering like an adorable maniac as tears of laughter escaped his eyes. “Stop Usopp, stop!” he begged, no part of him actually wanting the man to stop.
Continuing the skit, Usopp glanced at Luffy. However, upon witnessing his reaction, the comedian-in-training froze, not quite sure what to do. Luffy stared at Usopp, but it was clear his mind wasn’t really there. He sat lost in thought, hand to his chin as if he was contemplating something equivalent to the meaning of the universe. The only sound that could be heard was Choppers giggles.
But the reindeer went silent as soon as he opened his eyes and noticed that Usopp had stopped. He climbed to his feet, “You can keep going, Usopp,” he whisper-yelled, returning to his chair.
Luffy made a low, “Hmmm…” noise, tilting his head in concentration.
“Erm, Luffy?” Usopp asked.
Luffy’s eyes darted to him, and he sat there defeatedly, “Do I have to tell her I love you?”
Usopp blinked, taken aback by the question. “You’ve… Never told her you love her?” he asked in somewhat disbelief.
“What?!” Chopper screeched.
Luffy went unresponsive, closing his eyes to contemplate things again. His face contorted weirdly, as if thinking through this was too much for him. Usopp shook his head, as if to come to his senses after hearing such surprising news. “Yes! You should tell her you love her.”
Luffy’s eyes darted open, as if the statement gave him the only answer he needed. “Mmm!” he responded, giving one big nod. Instantly, he jumped to his feet, bolting towards the door. As he skidded out of the kitchen, he came to a stop. He stared out at the deck beneath him, but he didn’t process anything in front of him, as he went back to being lost in thought again. “Do I love her…” he murmured. After a moment he nodded again, coming to his own conclusion that he should say those special words and the importance of them, despite Usopp nudging him on.
He slung himself over the railing, toward the deck, and shouted your name for all to hear. He raced up and down the area, trying to find you, “I LOVE YOUUUUU!!”
=+=
You stood on the upper deck at the front of the Sunny, taking in the crisp air of the night as you stared at the peaceful ocean. Well, peaceful for a moment. All of a sudden the piercingly-loud sound of your captain’s voice reached your ears, beckoning you to him.
“I REALLY LOVE YOUUUU!!!” he shouted. You watched him swing up to the crow’s nest like a monkey, trying to find you.
You grinned as you heard those words, the surprise of them taking a second for their meaning to fully hit you. You quickly lifted your arms, waving your hands above your head to signal his attention. “Luffy!” you called.
From up near the crow’s nest, the silhouette of his arms whipped down to the railing beside you. His hands latching onto the rail, and he flung himself at full speed towards you. “I LOOOVE YOU!!” he shouted again. Instantly, the weight of his body collided with yours, almost sending you tumbling to the ground.
“Woahhh,” you laughed. You felt his arms extending around you and him and wrapping you both together in a very Luffy-esque hug.
Despite the limited lighting, you could make out his massive grin. “I loooove you!!” he declared again.
You matched his laugh as you realized this was the first time those words had blessed your ears. Had you been able to, you would’ve tried to cover the blush creeping across your cheeks, but with your hands pinned at your sides by Luffy’s arms, you were just happy for the cover of night. You had never really thought about the scenario of having him say that phrase, but now that it was here, you were at a loss for words.
He pushed his face against yours, your noses aggressively love-booping each other. “Say it baaaack!” he whined, a small pout growing on his face the more you were silent.
You let out a chuckle, his words bringing you back to reality, “I love you too, captain.”
He let out a victorious gremlin-like laugh, his forehead bonking against yours. He pressed a cute but messy kiss to your nose. Had it been physically possible to get closer to you, he would’ve smothered you even more with his physical affections.
argument trauma - sanji x you
sanji comforts you after luffy and ussop argue in water 7
w.c - 1k. not edited
I gulped away the anxiety that was quickly creeping through my chest. I leaned against the table, inches away from Sanji. We all watched as the argument unfurled more and more. Usopp grabbing onto Luffy’s shirt, practically spitting in his face with how close they were. Sanji and Nami injecting at their respecting times, but to no avail.
I clenched my jaw, picking aggressively at my fingernails in an attempt to alleviate my anxiety. I scooted the few inches closer to Sanji, pressing my arm against his. He leaned against me slightly, giving me the small comforting response I sought. My hand rhythmic flinched against his side, as I kept picking my finger. He noticed this quite quickly, and he slipped his soft hand into mine. The warmth of his fingers entangling around mine eased my mind, as he subconsciously rubbed his thumb against the back of my hand. Despite that, I still stood quite rigid, unable to do anything to calm the situation.
Quite suddenly, Sanji ripped his hand from my own, and round-house kicked Luffy in the chest, throwing him against the wall. I gasped, jerking away from the scene. Everyone went still. Deadly calm words were exchanged, and the next minute, Usopp was walking out the door, turning his back on the Straw hats.
Half an hour later…
I curled in on myself, clutching my legs to my chest as I rested my chin on my knees. The tiny closet I was occupying had just enough room for my squished figure, but with the door closed the darkened space was slightly claustrophobic. I stayed like this for some minutes, trying to ease the overwhelming anxiety I felt in my chest. We were currently in Water 7, and I had just witnessed something I thought I would never have to in my entire life: Usopp leaving the crew. While none of this was exactly affecting me, having watched the entire situation, I became overly worried, terrified of how the argument would unfold. Now, everyone was venting in their own ways. Zoro was out silently occupying the deck. Luffy was sleeping it off. And who knows where Sanji was. I hadn’t seen him since he and Nami ran after Usopp.
I startled as the door opened, light pouring into the small area. Sanji quite literally towered over me, a grimace on his face that hadn’t left since the argument. “Figured I’d find you here,” he spoke neutrally, almost in an effort to keep his voice from showing how disturbed he was by the situation.
I leaned my head back, letting it thump against the wall as I stared up at him. I matched his grimace. “It’s good for the anxiety,” I replied jokingly, but it fell somewhat flat.
He let out a sigh, and moved to sit on the floor, leaning his back against the wall next to the door. We sat perpendicular to each other, our shoulder inches from touching. “Are you okay?” he asked genuinely, but with some exhaustion. Had this been any other situation he probably would’ve been fawning over me, but with the drastic events of the evening, I was glad I was getting even an ounce of his time.
“That definitely remains to be seen…” I trailed off, resisting the urge to crawl into his lap and bury my head into his chest, throwing away my worries. Instead, I rested my hand on the floor next to him, hoping he would reach out and take it.
He slipped his hand into mine, absentmindedly tapping his fingers against mine, holding it against the wood of the floor. “I have too many thoughts about all of this.”
I nodded, despite him not being able to see me. “I know,” was all I could get out. A small sob escaped my lip before I could hold it back.
He stilled, and turned his head to the side to look at me. “Are you crying?” he asked, slight concern creeping into his voice.
I gulped, shoving away the burning sensation behind my eyes. The last thing I need to do was break down in front of Sanji right now. He didn’t deserve to deal with this entire situation and me. “I’m just processing everything,” I replied, trying to wave him away. I kept my head down so he wouldn’t see my straining to hold back tears.
He gently tugged my arm, “Let me see you, love.”
I took a shaky breath, one that was very apparent. I bit my lip, wondering if it was okay to ask what I was about to. “Can I… Can you give me a hug?” I asked pathetically, as a single tear fell down my cheek.
He took in a quick breath, “Mellorine, do you even have to ask?”
I let out a single chuckle, more tears falling now. I stood on my knees, closing the extremely small distance between us. With his arms outspread, I swung one leg over his, sitting on his lap. I looked up at him, taking in his tired face. I buried my face into his chest, and the feeling of his arms wrapping around me felt as comforting as a blanket. The scent of the cologne on his shirt immediately filled me, and I clung to his chest, almost for dear life, as the tears spilled out of me, slowly ebbing away my anxiety.
After a minute I spoke, tilting my head to rest my cheek against his chest. “I’m sorry…” I whispered.
His hand reached up, tangling itself into my hair as he held my head against him. But despite his exhaustion, he reached up, resting his fingers on my cheek, while his thumb wiped away my tears. "Please don't be,” he murmured, “I need you too, right now.”
kidnapped - shanks x you
you get captured in battle and have to work thru the trauma of it with your lover, shanks
w.c - 4k. not edited
You tapped your fingers anxiously along the great dining table in the galley. Swords clanged against swords on the deck above you. Shouts could be heard from all areas. And one voice above all resounded clearly over the others: Shanks. You were here, alone, below deck, for two reasons. One, you were terribly afraid of what would greet you up there. And two, Shanks had told you to stay here, quite bluntly.
Just minutes ago his voice had echoed through this room, both of you becoming wide-eyed as the clamor reached your ears for the first time. Shanks abruptly stood from his seat across you, trying to remain stable in light of the terrible hangover he had. His black coat flared out beneath him, ready to march into battle, but the dark circles under his eyes and large hand clutching his forehead spoke differently. You glanced up at him nervously, both in part due to whatever was happening above, and in part because you weren’t sure he was in any state to handle whatever was happening above.
You swallowed, “Are you in any state to do anything?”
He clenched his eyes shut, keeping his other hand flat on the table to keep himself from the temptation of sitting back down, as you imagined his head was pounding with a severe headache. He shook his head quickly, confirming that he was not indeed in any state to be in, and trying in vain to rid himself of his migraine.
“Not particularly,” he forced out, straightening himself. His eyes became sharp as a hawks as he stared down the exit. His lack of any more response told you more than those two words.
He marched toward the door at the end of the galley, and you shot to your feet. The force of it so sudden you caused the chair to knock itself to the floor. The clash of wood against wood echoed through the area. You opened your mouth to say something, to offer help, but you both knew that was miles away from what you wanted to actually do. A pained expression creased your face as you were conflicted in what to do. “I… Let me be of use, somehow.”
He paused at the doorway, turning to you briefly. You already knew from that look he wouldn’t allow it. “Stay here, and do not open the door for anyone.”
You tried again, with more urgency this time, “You’re in no state to fight. You can’t just rush up there blindly! Let me do something.”
“I can’t stand by idly while my men risk their lives. At least let me have the ease of mind that you’re away from harm.”
You opened your mouth to contradict him, but he beat you to it, his serious tone never wavering, “I mean it. I need you safe.”
And with those words, he had whisked away, leaving you to contemplate your life choices up until that point. And so, you sat there, twiddling your fingers against the wood, anxiously debating what move to make. Your lack of battle experience kept you at a standstill. However, as much as your heart warmed at Shanks wanting to protect you, seeing him in that state didn’t fully dispel the year to rush up to the deck and ensure he could hold his own…
And so, despite your little determination, you stood up, and followed the path Shanks had taken minutes ago. The clamor of the battle only increased as you moved up the stairs. Vibrations of bodies being slammed onto the deck shuddered through you. You wanted to find Shanks as quickly as possible, and ensure you weren’t about to become a hindrance to the crew if he was in trouble. That being said, what you could do that the rest of the crew couldn’t, you weren’t exactly sure. But you couldn’t stand idly by, waiting for the news that your beloved captain had been skewered to death because he was too hungover.
As you reached the top of them, you came to a halt, eyes just barely peeking over the deck to take in the scene. It gave you a view of the entire boat, apart from the upper deck behind you, where the captain’s wheel would have been if this boat had one. Fishmen. That was the first thing you saw. The Red hair pirates were against a ruthless crew of Fishmen. No wonder the battle had been so intense, and so drawn out. You spotted most of the crew holding their own in the fighting. Some 15 or so individual battles all happening right in front of you.Yasopp was pinned against the main mast, violently battling one Fishman who wouldn’t back off. And Benny was on the far side of the deck, making a chaotic, but seemingly victorious scene. But those were far from the person you wanted to see. You scanned left and right, fear creeping through your heart that he had already managed to be thrown overboard. Quickly, you realized there was no one in sight that remotely resembled Shanks. You took a shaky breath, the question was, did he get viciously flung somewhere you couldn’t see, on the verge of death? Or was he successfully fighting on the upper deck? The longer you waited, the more that question seemed to be answered for you. Crew members weren’t violently shouting his name, calling for backup. And the man himself couldn’t be heard shouting or making a rowdy scene.
You swallowed, slowly rising from your hiding place to confirm your suspicions. Your only goal was to sprint to the next set of stairs, a mere 10 feet away, and check if the man was up there. A short breath left you, and then you were moving forward, feet dragging at a steady pace to go unnoticed by the battles that were only a short distance away. Your breaths left you at a frighteningly quick rate as you reached the bottom of the stairs within seconds. Looking up the stairs did little for you, except give you a quick glance of a black coat swishing past above, followed by a shout familiar to your ears.
In a single moment, relief coursed through you. But the warmth of that feeling instantly turned to ice, as you heard a voice crackle behind you.
“Hello there little human.”
Before you could turn, a large, webbed set of hands forced around you, pinning your arms together. Fear seized your heart as you were easily lifted from the deck, and tossed over his shoulder like a rag doll.
An ear-piercing screech ripped from your throat, as your vision was turned upside down for a moment. A single word screamed from your mouth in a desperate cry for help, “SHANKS!”
Your head hung for a moment, spinning as you tried to gain your bearings. Your view briefly consisted of only the Fishmans back side, scales and all, with your tangled hanging hair framing your vision. But you tossed your head back, as your captor briskly turned, making his way to the edge of the deck. There, standing on the upper deck of the boat, was the very reason you had embarked on your little adventure in the first place. With a single hand, Shanks fended off two Fishmen, but his attention was turned only to you. Mouth drawn into a tight line, his eyes searched desperately for any way to rescue you without getting swarmed by his opponents. You could practically hear his thoughts wondering in despair why you were in the enemy’s hands, and not below deck. And begging you to find a way to escape, or for anyone else to rescue you.
A shout like no other violently left the red head, “YASOPP!”
Your eyes desperately searched the deck for the man. In the corner of your vision, Yasopp, seemingly free from his opponent, charged at your captor with all his might. In a brief whirlwind of chaos and fighting, you were immediately dropped to the wood below, the short fall doing little to harm you. You scrambled on your hands and knees as you backed away from the savage scene. Relief hadn’t quite hit you though, as you were still far from safety.
The shout of your name jerked your head back to Shanks. “Get below deck, NOW!” he bellowed, instantly sending you to your feet. You made desperate eye contact with the downward flight of stairs, like you were yearning for a long lost lover. Sprinting forward, you reached your destination in a matter of minutes, flinging yourself down the stairs and into the familiar dining hall. With a loud slam, the door behind you sealed closed, finally earning you a moment of peace.
You immediately moved to the table, pulling out a chair to keep watch of the door, in case your capturer decided to follow you for some reason. You sat there, arms and legs crossed, rapidly tapping your fingers against yourself as you stared down the door. It didn’t take long for your sharp focus to eventually morph into a slow play-by-play scene of what had happened to you only minutes ago. Your jaw trembled as the ebbing fear flared up inside you again, reminding you of how foolish you had been. The ragged image of webbed fish-hands struck your mind again and again, plaguing your vision. Despite your weak attempts to focus on the fading sounds of the battle above, the only sound in your ears was that of the raspy Fishmans voice. Two small tears edged themselves out of the corners of your eyes, leaving small ghostly trails down your cheeks. You stayed like this, frozen to the chair, as damaging memories flashed through you. Seemingly nothing could remove the crushing thoughts that whispered of how incapable and how much of a hindrance you had been. But most of all, desperately hoping that Shanks was safe.
Suddenly, the door you had intended to keep watch of, forced open, slammed against the wall. Dawning a new gash across his forehead, and even darker circles under his eyes, Shanks frantically entered the room. His reddish hair was a tangled mess as he stood some feet from you. You bolted to your feet at his entrance. He stilled at the sight of you, the distress in his eyes faded looking you up and down, seemingly understanding you were unhurt.
“You’re safe…” you trailed off as you took a step towards him, relief bleeding through the fear that had threatened to overtake you.
He quickly scaled the distance to you. Instantly, you felt the weight of his arm crushing you against him, pinning you to his chest. The smell of his sweat and linen shirt reached your nose, but you couldn’t care less as you wrapped your arms around him, clenching the material of his jacket tightly in your fists. He buried his head in your hair and a deep exhale racked through him. You could almost feel the sheer amount of relief that consumed him.
“I thought I lost you,” he spoke exhaustedly into you, lips moving against your scalp. You could only nod against him, afraid your voice would betray the fear you had felt moments ago. Tears threatened to return as you rested your chin on his chest, looking up at him, giving him what was probably a not-so-pretty smile. At that action, he released you slightly, opening a gap to meet your gaze, but not removing his hand. He matched your smile, but gave you a quizzical look nonetheless as if something hit him. “Of course I’m safe.” He echoed your words almost triumphantly. “Why shouldn’t I be?”
Now it was your turn to look at him in slight confusion, as if he had forgotten the scenario that had taken place a little while ago, with you urging him to stay safe. “Because you’re really hung over right now…” You swallowed, feeling the words scratch against your throat as you forced them out. “You’re in practically no shape to be fighting. Don’t you have any idea how scary it was watching you charge up there, not knowing the slightest thing of what was happening or whether or not you were safe?”
He removed his arm from your waist, and shouldered his way around you, collapsing into the chair you had occupied moments ago. He shrugged his cloak off, letting it fall to the back of the seat. His arm reached up to slide a hand down his exhausted face, as the unused sleeve of his shirt fell limp against the wood. His smile turned to slight amusement though as his eyes reconnected with yours. “So, you were worried for me?” He paraphrased.
You shrugged adamantly, feeling the effects of exhaustion yourself. “Yeah, I don’t know. A little hard not to when you go charging into battle like a bull.” You meandered towards him, keeping your gaze down in guilt as you knew where this conversation was about to head. You had seen the wheels turning behind his head after you spoke that sentence.
He reached for your wrist when you came close enough, his rough hand molding against your smooth skin. He gave you a small tug, letting you fall into his lap. You straddled him as he responded, “I’m the one who charged on deck like a bull?” he questioned, taking a jab at your actions. His attempt at a teasing tone practically failed, between his tiredness and the underlying seriousness of the question.
You resisted the urge to shift uncomfortably, and instead picked at a bit of his shirt that had pilled up. The kneading of the cloth somehow gave you more comfort than being in Shanks’s lap at that moment. He spoke again, “Did you rush up to the deck for me?”
A million thoughts forced their way through your head in an attempt to form a response. You forced your gaze to meet his in hopes you could feign confidence, but it lasted a moment too short to be considered believable. “There was a Fishman who found me down here…” you lamely responded, shifting your eyes to focus on a random spot just over his shoulder.
His fingers grazed your jaw, tilting your face back towards his to reconnect your eyes. His voice dropped as he stroked your cheek with the back of his fingers. “Love, my eyes were only on that set of stairs. There wasn’t a single Fishman who found his way down here. It’s my fault for missing you come up, though.”
You huffed and pushed yourself off of him, not all that surprised he was pressing the matter, or saw through your blatant lie. You leaned against the table and hugged yourself, not wanting to admit to your mistake. “What was I supposed to do?! You were in a horrible state and you just barged up there like it was nothing. I know I can’t do much, but…” You trailed off, eyes searching the air frantically for the words you wanted to say. “What if I had gone up there and found you in a dead heap on the ground? Who was going to help you? Because at least I could’ve pulled you out of there if that Fishman hadn’t gotten in the way. And then if you had been dead what does that make me? Double dead!” Tears pricked your eyes as the words tumbled out of your mouth. You knew it wasn’t fair or true, to blame him for your theoretical death, but you did it nonetheless.
He stretched back, placing his forearm on the table like it was an armrest. “Battles aren’t all about me.” While his words held truth, you could see in his expression that he found your concern particularly endearing.
“Well, maybe they are to me!” you cried out. You bit your lip, forcing down the lump in your throat. You weren’t sure what you were more upset about. The fact that you had made the stupid decision in the first place, or the fact that you wanted to dump all of your anxiety of earlier onto him, but couldn’t bring yourself to.
He reached forward and gently tugged at your elbow. You let out a sigh and turned to him, letting him slide his hand down your arm until he held your own. He gave a small smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes as he looked up at you, “Sometimes I wonder if you care for me more than I deserve.”
You huffed, moving to sit on top of the table, releasing his hand. “Well maybe you should drop me off at the next dock then, if that’s such a broken rule on your ship.”
He pushed the chair back, and stood over you. He planted his hand on the table, barely grazing your thigh. “If it were a rule then you would’ve broken it long ago.”
“Well maybe it should be a rule then, and then you could get upset at me for breaking it,” you muttered, more to yourself than him, but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t want him to hear it.
His response was more introspective than you had expected, but you accepted it nonetheless, “Maybe, instead of punishing yourself by thinking I deserve to be mad, you should accept that I’m far from that.”
You blinked, staring up into his eyes. Whatever worry and doubt that had been plaguing you began ebbing away. How had this man been able to pinpoint your feelings so perfectly? You swallowed, “Then what are you?”
He leaned forward, his hair falling forward to frame his brow. “I’m just glad that you’re okay.”
The wheels in your head turned, but ultimately you were too tired to make the argument that he could only feel that way because of your original mistake. You bit your lip, “You’re too nice for me…”
“Am I? Or maybe I just found someone who loves me a bit too much.” He gave you a soft smile, one that warmed your heart, despite the cold that laid over it. You slouched, not quite sure how to respond, but your downturned eyes met his nevertheless. He adopted a slight teasing tone, “What would I do without my princess in shining armor, dashing to my side during my time of need?”
Usually, a comment of that sort would’ve made you burst into laughter, but from the residual anxiety of the earlier trauma you could barely crack a smile. His eyes scoured your face, instantly picking up on this. “There’s something you’re not telling me,” he urged, knowing his comments weren’t getting you to share what you needed.
Silence slowly enveloped you both as you tried to formulate a thought in response. The only thing you could focus on were his steady breaths that bloomed across your forehead, one after the other. You were almost afraid to confess the remainder of your feelings to him. Keeping to his word, you knew he wouldn’t be upset, but you couldn’t help but feel guilty at the idea of using him as a therapist for your idiotic actions. In an effort to distract yourself, you gave into the temptation, and slowly reached up, carefully pushed back his red locks.
You let out a shaky exhale, quite in contrast to him. Despite your heavy feelings, your gaze flickered to his lips momentarily. You knew he wasn’t trying to coerce you through romance, but nevertheless, his posture over your remained unwavering, even as he knowingly watched your eyes. Unable to deny yourself, you leaned forward, delicately pressing your lips to his. You both were well aware you were avoiding his question. But despite that, a smile pulled at the corners of his mouth, immediately leaning into the kiss. His lips devoured yours, as his hand snaked around your waist, pulling you ever closer. Your heart beat against your chest, overwhelming emotions spilling from your center, and into the kiss you hadn’t known you had been longing for.
After a moment longer, the sweetness of his lips became tainted with the taste of salt. You pulled away, hoping Shanks hadn’t noticed. Blinking rapidly, you reached up, feeling the wetness of tears staining your cheeks. You hiccuped and buried your watery face into your hands. Something about seeing tears that you hadn’t known you were crying broke something within you. You let out a sob, and began ranting, relieving yourself of the bunch of nerves and anxiety that was torturing you. “What I did was so incredibly stupid. And I know you know that, but I just wanted to help, but then I did the opposite of that! And… And…” You lifted your face, bright-red eyes staring at the man before you but your mind wasn’t focused on him. It was focused on the memories of earlier, reliving your terrifying experience once again. “He grabbed me so easily. And you were so far away, I thought it was over. Who knows what they would’ve done to me…” A shudder racked through you. “And his awful, slimy hands…” You trailed off numbly, as if in a daze.
Shanks’s words cut through you. “Look at me.” You blinked, forcing yourself back down to reality, but didn’t do as he asked.
You began shaking your head, staring at your shaking hands in your lap. You hiccuped, “I’m sorry… You shouldn’t have had to listen to that. You need to lie down. You have a hangover and I’m just dragging this out.”
It was his turn to shake his head. “You could drag this out until the end of time and I’d still listen.”
You glanced up at him, and was surprised to see a frown etched across his face for the first time that day. He wrapped his arm around you, cradling your head against his chest. It felt like he was doing it more for himself rather than for you, but you still found it comforting. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to rescue you,” he murmured.
Your eyes went wide, “I should be the one apologizing…”
“Then apologize,” he said simply.
You stilled, letting a moment of silence pass. You practically deflated into him as you spoke, “Then yeah, I’m so, so, sorry,” you mumbled. You raveled your arms around his waist, burying your face into him. He held you against him tighter, wordlessly accepting your apology. But to you, he did so much more than that. Your remaining anxiety had all but disappeared at his actions, and your reasons to worry had ceased to exist. While your trauma would still linger for a bit, you knew that was inevitable. And ultimately, probably something you should hold onto as a reminder of this lesson.
He spoke up, “Maybe it’s a good thing I didn't rescue you. Might’ve risked being armless.” You could practically hear his grin.
You unwrapped your arms from him and gave him a slight shove away, giving you space to stand. You couldn’t help the smile that cracked across your face. Reminded of the words he had spoken time and time again, you echoed, “It’s only an arm.”
“Never said it was only two arms,” he countered. He moved back to the chair, letting his exhaustion finally take every part of him.
You gave him a small eye roll, but tired enough yourself to not have the energy to concoct a creative rebuttal. “I’ll be back, I’m making you a tea.” You walked around the table, making your way to the kitchen.
“Don’t forget to spike it!” he replied loudly. That comment earned a much larger eye roll from you.
You were in and out of the kitchen momentarily, but by the time you had returned with the drink, the redhead had passed out on the table, arm tucked under his head like a pillow. You gave a small smile and set the mug down. In an effort to make him more comfortable, you leaned him back against the chair, letting his head fall to his shoulder. You pressed a small kiss to his forehead, before sitting in the chair next to him, where you began drinking his tea. You propped your legs up on his lap, making yourself comfortable. Soon after, you were nodding off, joining your captain in your much needed rest.

Your opponent- a fellow crew member, towered over you on the deck of the ship. You bounced on the balls of your feet, throwing up your hands in defense against whatever the burly man was about to throw at you. A few others watched boredly, but there was no air of anticipation. But you were about to change that after you took a beating, and hopefully won. But this wasn’t about winning, this was about standing on your feet by the end of this, win or lose. You slowly circled each other, each expecting the other to swing the first punch, or throw the first kick. You had all the time in the world, apart from the waning sun on the horizon.
After a few steps, you caught sight of a particular shadow being cast to the wood from someone above you. Your eyes flicked up to the deck above. There stood the captain of the ship, his dark red hair rustling in the gentle breeze. Shanks. His eyes sparkled, almost encouragingly, but not without anticipation for the entertainment.
You grinned, “Watch me, Shanks!”
“What’s it look like I’m doin’?” He shouted back with his own smile tugging at his lips.
Your enthusiasm rose with those simple words. You turned your focus back to your crew mate, preparing yourself for-
WHAM!
You didn’t even have time to process the kick. Your face slammed onto the deck, pain flaring through your temple. Black spots danced in your vision. You had to push the pain away. It wouldn’t conquer you that easily. You let out a groan and slowly pushed yourself to your feet.
You shakily raised your fists, clutching them close in a defensive position. But despite that, you took a step forward and swung. The loud crunch of your fist against his jaw pierced through the air. You cracked a grin.
SLAM!
His fist pummeled you square in the chest. Not only sending a shock of pain through your spine, but knocking the wind out of you. You fell to your knees, feeling your lungs clench in agony as they searched for oxygen. You let out a wheeze, and then another, but nothing could ease the pain that throbbed in your chest and head. Pain that wanted to consume you. Pain that you hated. That made you want to run away. But you could take more than that. You had to take more than that.
Moments passed, but you never stood up. you silently begged with your eyes for your opponent to give you another chance, or another minute to push the blazing pain away. But he only shook his head, turning away briskly. A shudder racked through you as you sought to take another limiting breath.
And then the familiar thud of the captain's boots walking down the small set of stairs met your ears. You clenched your teeth, failure wracking through your body like the pain that still lingered. You braced yourself for the words you knew were about to leave his mouth.
“Still gotta work on that pain tolerance a bit!” He shouted to you, with what seemed like kind intent. But those disturbing, patronizing words would only ever remind you of your failure.
You picked yourself up, scurrying away like a frightened dog before he could reach you. You bolted down to the sleep quarters, knowing well enough you weren't safe from his presence if you simply ignored him in your hammock. Instead, you hoisted yourself into a lone empty barrel in the corner of the room. You curled in on yourself and latched on the cover, letting your head fall to your knees.
You were the youngest on Shanks’s crew, and you had been on it for some years. But it was only within the past few months that you had graduated from chores to participating in the actual fighting. Despite that, you had only participated in a few battles. It was quickly discovered your pain tolerance was close to zero. And while you had been trying to build it up every day through training with different crew members, your progress was also close to zero. Shanks was well aware of this, and time after time his signature words had pierced your ears “Gotta work on that pain tolerance!”
The door to the room loudly creaked open, and you could practically feel the weight of Shanks standing in the doorway. You clutched yourself tighter, trying to will the pressure that built up behind your eyes. You felt even more of a coward for not being willing to face him, but something was different today. It had been the final straw. Maybe it was because you believed you could last more than two hits, maybe it was the encouraging smile Shanks had flashed you earlier. But you had expected yourself to do better. And you had totally failed.
His voice suddenly pierced through the air, “If there were a young someone in here… I might say there’s progress to be made, but we'll get there.” He paused, adding, “And try not to be late for dinner.” Though his words seemed genuine, you knew they were far from it.
You felt his presence leave after a short moment, but you didn’t bother chasing after him. You didn’t want to be around his faked enthusiasm, telling you it would be okay. You knew he wasn’t proud, and the fact he tried to cover it up only made it worse. You knew it was fake, you knew you couldn't trust his words, because you had never been able to trust the words of anyone from your past. Any one of your previous caretakers. So why should he be any different? Your memories turned to thoughts of your past, but you forcefully pushed them away, unwilling to face them.
Slowly, the minutes passed, and eventually, your limbs were too stiff to stay cramped in the barrel any longer. You popped out, smelling a delicious aroma in the air. At least the crew would be busy with dinner right now. You gave a stretch and cautiously made your way to the deck. Almost no one would be up here, and that was good enough for you. You paced to the bow, sitting criss-cross on the head of the boat. You looked over the sparkling waters that glistened with the eve of day.
Your fingers absentmindedly made their way to the knife in your belt, the tiny blade it was. You twirled it in your fingers, accidentally giving yourself a scratch or two. They were welcomed though, as you considered them a part of your training for pain tolerance. You did this for a little while longer, letting the thoughts of that day entirely consume you. You knew that Shanks sat somewhere, shaking his head at your failure, wondering why you couldn’t do better. You spun the blade in your hand one last time before a twisted, awful idea hit your thoughts.
You spun in your seat, facing the entirety of the empty deck. Without looking down, you tested yourself as you brought the blade sharp against your thigh. You gently pressed into it, earning a small wince from you. And then-
SLICE
Right through your flesh. You grit your teeth, your entire body clenching at the pain. You stared down at the thin streak of blood left on your leg, just below the hem of your shorts. It burned, but it was manageable. You let out a shaky smile.
Again, you slashed yourself, a mere inch below. Pain flared. But it was tolerable for the most part. A single tear fell down your unhinged face, as you smiled at the blood flowing from you. You glanced at the empty ship, almost hoping a certain someone would show. To prove to him that you could take it. That you weren't the failure he thought you were. That you could earn your position on his crew, and for the first time, truly belong somewhere.
You brought the tip of the blade another inch down, and let it rest on your skin. You pictured the whole slip of metal entering your leg. You couldn’t. You shouldn’t-
A wave crashed against the bow, throwing the boat up, and then down. And the blade went with it, sinking right into your skin, all the way to the hilt.
You let out a high shriek of pain and ripped it right back out. You stared in disbelief at the fountain of blood that smeared down your leg, at the pain that bloomed from the simple cut. Your cheeks glistened with fresh tears, but even with that, the sheer amount of pain was less than you imagined. You could handle more. You had to handle more.
You brought the tip of the blade to the bottom of your thigh, near your knee. A blank canvas ready to be painted with your own blood. Slowly, you pressed down, letting the pain seep into your leg. You stared at the thing like it was a treasure to behold.
“STOP!” A loud voice suddenly pierced through the air.
You jumped, sending the blade deeper into your skin. You cringed but kept it there. You tilted your head up, watching with some relief as you saw Shanks bounding towards you. All this pain wouldn’t be for nothing now.
When he was a mere 10 feet away you put up one hand, signaling for him to stop, but he only grew closer. Your other hand rested on the handle of the knife. Wet tears streamed down your face, as your wobbly voice addressed him with a smile. “Watch me! I can finally take it!”
You sounded deranged. Like a wild animal. But that didn’t stop you from giving the blade a sharp twist, letting it tear through you even more. No less than a second later did he reach you. He loomed over you and gripped the knife, quickly but cautiously pulling it from your skin. He flung it hard to the deck. Horror morphed onto his face as he took in the sight beneath him.
You winced at the action, but only watched him scan your leg, “What the hell is all of this?” He asked in disbelief, though his tone suggested he knew.
You blinked away a stray tear, “I’m working on my pain tolerance,” you said simply, feeling exhaustion start to crawl over you. You followed his gaze down to your bloody skin and you grimaced at the scene. You may have gone further than you realized.
“I’m stitching you up,” he said forcefully, turning to gather the supplies.
You nodded slowly, an eerie sense of fear creeping through you at his tone. Whatever wild energy that had consumed you was all but gone by now. Your tears dried quickly, as you quietly, and calmly, contemplated what you had done.
He returned quickly, kneeling in front of you to patch you up. He silently wrapped a clean bandage around the shallower cuts, saving the stitches for the deeper ones. The fact he was cleaning your own self-inflicted injuries made you feel slightly guilty. But even worse than that, was how you could practically feel the disappointment radiating from him.
Your eyes pooled again. “I wanted to make you proud,” you began, trying to explain, “To show that I could be a worthwhile member of the crew.”
His skillful hands began threading a needle through your skin, earning a small wince from you. Had it been anyone else, you would’ve expected only a harsh and fiery response. But that was far from what you received. He moved his head to look you in the eye, a saddened smile now replacing his earlier look of disbelief, “You do not have to put yourself in harm’s way to earn my pride.”
“But I have to prove myself!” you pressed, sniffling. “I’m not some weakling. I can take this stuff.”
He turned back toward the stitches, continuing. “And you have already proven yourself! More than enough.”
You huffed. There he went again with his fake encouragement. “Why do you do that?” you threw at him.
He creased his brow slightly as he continued to stitch you , “Do what?”
“Everytime I fail, you always pretend like I succeeded, like I actually did something worthwhile. It’s always this stupid fake encouragement that we both know isn’t helping anyone.”
His voice lowered gently as he looked at you, not hiding the disturbed look in his eye, “Is that how you really feel?”
You went silent, staring at your wounds, wondering if you already said too much with those simple sentences.
He placed a hand on your uninjured knee and gave it a gentle squeeze. He urged you to speak, “Is it?"
You took a shaky breath, trying not to break down in front of him. “Every time I fight I always try to push myself. I just want you to accept me like a normal member of the crew. But after every failure you always throw up this happy facade like you don’t want me to know that you’re disappointed deep down.”
He began shaking his head, trying to process what he had been accused of, “I’ve never once been disappointed in you. And it was never my intention to be seen as fake. I’ve never meant anything other than what I say.”
You looked at him with suspicion, wondering if even now he was lying.
He let out a small amused laugh as he snipped the thread with scissors, finishing his work, “What’s that look for? Don’t take my word?”
You shrugged, not really knowing.
He went on, addressing your previous words, “Your victories or failures do not determine your place on my crew. I would never lie about that.”
“What determines my place then? Why do I get to stick around? Is it the fact that you’d feel guilty if you got rid of me? Because all you do is babysit me!” you snapped at him. You cringed inside. You were angry at yourself, not him. But you couldn't hold back from lashing out at him because of it.
Because deep down, you were well aware that you weren't good enough for his crew, or anywhere else.
“If you were good enough then I wouldn’t have to babysit you.”
Those were words your former caretakers had once told you. You had been told that line (or something similar) so many times it was hard to keep count. You were passed around from “parent” to parent, always being known as the orphaned child who was a drag to every family you entered. The sheer amount of physical and emotional trauma that took place in those homes was enough to haunt you to this day… But that was until a certain Shanks took you in. But even then, you could never quite shake off the old, horrible memories… Because ultimately, you believed you were a burden to everyone, including Shanks. And instead of telling you that himself, he simply covered it up under fake encouragement.
“I would feel guilty if I abandoned you-”
You cut him off frantically, “Just tell me I’m a burden at that point! I’m a burden no matter what I do! I’m a burden if I stick around here, and I make you feel guilty if I’m gone!” you slammed your mouth shut, realizing you had reached the heart of the issue.
Something changed in his usually calm expression. He reached for your face, cupping both cheeks with his hands. “You are not a burden,” he spoke intensely, lowering his voice. “I would feel guilty because I care for you. You are my friend, and absolutely nothing less.”
You swallowed in an effort to force back the tears. You stumbled over your words, frantically searching his eyes for any hint that he was lying. Almost too shocked by his words to believe him. “But… Everyone else always… They called me a drag…” you trailed off, but he was quite familiar with the past that you were referring to.
“You have left that life behind,” He reminded, wiping a stray tear off your cheek with the pad of his thumb, “You are far from being such a thing here. And if you ever were, we would willingly bear you to the end. I took you in for a reason. And I’ve never regretted that decision.”
You let out a shaky sigh, not expecting those words. “But… It always felt like you were disappointed in me and were just trying to cover it up.”
“I’m not quite sure where you got that idea from,” He spoke seriously but gently, setting his hands down, “Everything I’ve ever said I’ve meant sincerely. What you can and can’t do on this ship does not determine your value.” He glanced at your wounds, “And you do not need these to prove that you are not a burden.”
“Then how have I proven myself?” you asked bluntly.
“Through your determination. You’ve shown the character you hold, and there’s hardly anything more to prove. That is why you are a member of my crew.” He went on, “But do not scar yourself. Scars hold memories of noble trials.”
You nodded slowly. This certainly didn’t classify as a “noble trial”. You let out a small sob as you tried to take all of his words in, “Are you mad?” you asked weakly, but your simple sentence implied much more. Despite his words, your lingering trauma made you wonder if Shanks was through with you because of your actions.
The question hung in the air between you. Eventually, he gave you a small smile. “If that is your way of asking if I’m done with you, then far from it.” He added softly, “Haven't you been listening?”
Your lower lip quivered upon hearing those words. “I’m sorry…” you whispered, not being able to meet his eyes. Nevertheless, behind those simple words were doubts that flooded your brain. Doubts that he actually didn’t care for you that much. That he wouldn’t treat you the same after this.
He reached forward, wrapping his arms around you, embracing you with more care than you had ever known. Minding your leg, he held you tight. It was as if he could sense your doubts as he softly spoke, “I’ll have you know that nothing could ever how I care for you.”
Perhaps he knew that your doubts couldn't be dispelled after one day. But something in you broke, as you realized that those words were his promise to prove that he truly cared for you. That one day, he would destroy every last doubt inside of you. You leaned into him, letting his presence, (perhaps for the very first time) finally comfort you.
