little human you sat on the big, flat rocks in the shallows of his home. vash's scarred tail swaying back and forth behind him where he's propped himself up at your feet—curiously prodding at the fleshy appendages. he makes these odd noises too, half-coo, half-gurgle and you're busy trying to decipher if they're a good or bad reaction when his lips peel back from his teeth.

"oh," you breath lowly at the rows of sharp teeth glinting in the low sunlight. you begin to gesture up at your own teeth. "are those..." vash's gaze flicks up to yours—wide, dark eyes so piercing you immediately trail off.

he doesn't speak, you've come to learn. whether by choice or by biology is still a mystery to you, but you've found you don't mind. not when he's this expressive—web ears twitching slightly as you hum another mindless noise when his wet fingers brush your ankle.

you just need to decode what his merman expressions mean and you'll be golden!

"by all means," you huff, vash's clawed fingers dragging dully over the top of your bare foot. "feel me up. weirdo."

your voice is embarrassingly affection, but it's not like vash knows that. hell, you don't even know his proper name—vash being the name of the cove below your house and you figured... well. you weren't thinking straight when you decided to name the merman who emerges from his shallows just to ogle your legs. you rarely are around vash.

sometimes it feels as though he understands you. other times, you may as well be talking to a fish.

quite literally.

vash veers forwards and water splashes up onto the rock you're sat on, his wide chest touching your feet. he peers at your shin with such intensity you can't help but laugh softly.

"must look weird to you, huh?" you wiggle your toes but vash doesn't startle. "i've been visiting you for months and you stare at my legs every time..." you laugh again. "you sure you're not bored yet?"

this time, however, vash leans forwards—teeth bared like a warning sign—towards the inside of your knee.

"vash what—" you try to jerk away from him but the hand on your foot suddenly tightens.

and for the first time since you started visited the cove, you feel fear. your gut swoops as those sharp teeth get closer and closer and oh god you really need your legs not like this please not like th—

it tickles. kind of.

the way vash drags only the tips of his teeth along the delicate skin. almost like he's tasting you—except there's no tongue involved to your great confusion.

he widens his jaw and the bottom teeth come into play. two sets of razor-sharp teeth scraping you so softly you would believe you're imagining it if not for the very real, very wet, very cold hand with an iron-clad grip on your foot.

you tug your bottom lip between your teeth.

"is this some kind of... is this a greeting? am i supposed to bite you back?"

vash makes another gurgling noise, his other hand landing on your other foot like shackle. his teeth creep up past your knee. you fight the reflex reaction to jam vash's chin with the limb as he rises up out of the water.

he's huge.

a fact that, while easy to forget, is difficult to reconcile with when all eight-to-nine-foot-something of him is threatening to... well. nibble you to death?

vash's teeth creep past your mid thigh, and drift inwards, nipping at the soft skin as he gets nearer and nearer to your core. you shift awkwardly on the rock, unsure exactly when you're supposed to stop him and not quite confident he'll even let you.

god knows you can't force him to do anything. including making him stop this peculiar, almost-tasting of your legs.

his webbed hands squeeze your feet once, twice.

you feel a wet nose brush against the gusset of your bikini bottoms when his teeth reach the top of your thigh and muffle a startled, utterly mortified moan at the sensation.

then, he's gone. backing out of your space with all the grace of a lithe cat.

vash makes what seems like it could be meaningful eye contact with you for a few long seconds and your mouth opens and closes around a soundless noise of confusion.

all before he turns tail and slips back into the water without a sound. leaving you alone in his home—and with an embarrassing warmth lingering in your gut you hope doesn't translate between your species.

it was just a custom, you try to convince yourself. not... not whatever my brain thinks he was doing. do mermaids even know what sex is anyway? probably not, right.

you shake your head and shamefully, just once, squeeze your thighs together for some relief before you rise from the rock and head home.

After the Great Fall, you'd lived on one of the surviving ships for a little under a century, going in and out of cryo-sleep. Over time, as the crew that was left pushed the Plants to their limits in order for the remaining occupants of the sip to survive, many of the Plants died. The ones that remained soon rebelled against their abusers

Not long after coming out of cryo-sleep for what you didn't know would be the last time, the sips alarms were blaring. You ran to check on the Plants, but nothing could prepare you for what you were about to experience

Inside the Plant room, each of the Plants pushed themselves to their limit, the energy output threatening to blow up the entire ship

You and the few others who managed to escape the blast were then thrust into a cruel, harsh environment, forced to make difficult decisions for the sake of survival

of the few that survived the blast, you were the only one to make it to the nearest town

the inhabitants of Jenora Rock were wary of you at first, but as you demonstrated knowledge and experience that would aid in their survival, they warmed up to you, and eventually trusted you as a friend and part of the community

Wanting to atone for the sins in your past, you spent much of your time attending to the Plants in Jenora Rock until an issue came up that even you couldn't deal with; One of the Plants was dying from overuse

That's when Vash showed up in town. He performed a miracle you couldn't explain; bringing the Plant back from the brink of death, thereby restoring water and resources to Jenora Rock

Afterwards, the townspeople asked Vash to work alongside you, to help keep the Plants functional- and he agreed, for a time

In the time you knew Vash while he briefly lived in Jenora Rock, the two of you became close. Your thoughtful, somewhat sad nature drew Vash to you, the mystery of what exactly caused your stoic nature eluding him until you decided to trust him completely

You disclosed to him the many sources of guilt that kept you up at night, the nightmares of repeating the mistakes of your past. Vash listened without judgement

In your short time with him, Vash became your most trusted confidant, your friend, and- you hoped- eventually something more

Beneath your stoicism was a powerful current of emotion- protectiveness, regret, passion and a drive to be different- to be better

Vash saw this deep undercurrent in you, and in it, his hope for humanity. That flicker of what humanity could be- the ability to grow and change, to learn from mistakes with grace and treat others with compassion

This affection wasn't one-sided either. However, not knowing of the extent of Vash's feelings for you, you remained quiet until it was too late

The day eventually came for Vash to leave Jenora Rock for reasons he couldn’t- or wouldn’t- explain

Little did you know, you'd see him again some years later travelling with a young woman and an old reporter. Your chance to voice what was never said all that time ago has finally come

for vash, it's when you show kindness to others. People, animals, insects, inanimate objects- it doesn't matter. Kindness directed to anyone or anything his him staring

Despite his seemingly endless love for humanity, sometimes there seeds of bitterness and resentment that begin to take root in his heart

Obviously Vash loves humans and is endlessly forgiving, but when faced with the worst of humanity time and time again, it's hard for one's resolve to stand strong

When you show kindness to others, Vash's faith in humanity is restored bit by bit. Whether its holding the door open for someone, giving resources to someone in need, or even just telling someone to have a nice day, Vash's heart flutters when he gets to see the best of humanity in you

Wolfwood

Wolfwood can't help but stare whenever you're interacting with kids

Growing up in an orphanage, he didn't have many adult figures in his life to look up to- then, in the Eye of Michael, he grew a resentment for adults- especially ones who harm children

If you're ever in a situation where you're interacting with children, Wolfwood is studying you closely. It doesn't matter what your reaction is- as long as its not outwardly hateful, mean, or hurtful, he's enamored

Even if you're awkward or shy with kids, he can't help but have hearts in his eyes

There's a part of him that yearns for a reality where, as a kid, maybe he would get to meet someone like you

Nai

Nai admires when you speak up for what you believe in- especially if it's a common interest (in a modern au, this would mean something to do with environmentalism- in canon, it would likely be your opinions on humanity)

Having been around people who were willing to lie to protect their own interests, Nai easily sees through any attempts at insincerity

Even if the two of you disagree on the nature of humanity, when Nai sees you speaking so passionately, he can't help but fall in love with you even more

Your honesty, passion and drive to have your opinions heard has Nai enamored with your ideas

If the two of you happen to agree on humanity needing to go for the sake of the world's wellbeing- well then, he's all the more on board with what you have to say

Looks like another person has been swept off their feet by the Humanoid Typhoon

Vash isn't open with his affections. Often times it's up to you to initiate displays of affection, otherwise Vash tends to close himself off, even to you. His words and actions are constantly guarded. Everything he does, there's something more, something hidden, just beneath the surface

Despite his attempts to distance himself from the people he cares about, Vash craves emotional intimacy. He won't let himself indulge in it, and even if you initiate, he often finds a way to create the distance that he thinks will keep you safe

It's contradictory- how full of secrets and how open of a book Vash is. It's not hard to tell when he's getting ready to sacrifice himself or make a stupid decision that he thinks is for the good of everyone around him. It's not hard to see when he's holding himself back, or when he wants affection but won't ask for it

I promise it's not all secrets and self-imposed suffering, though. Vash is so endlessly kind- painfully so. There are times he'll ignore the self-imposed ban on giving/receiving affection just so he can feel you; a pat on the shoulder, brushing his hand against yours, linking your pinkies together, a quick, light kiss on your cheek- his displays of affection are small, and it makes them all the more meaningful

A couple of Vash's favorite things to do with you are stargazing and eating. Enjoying a meal with you, no matter how simple, always warms his heart. Being someone who denies himself often, Vash will forget the simple joy of sharing a meal with someone, so getting to enjoy food with you is something he cherishes.

Stargazing is something the two of you do every night- Vash insists on it. It's one of the few things he'll outright ask for. The stillness of nights with you is a welcome change from constantly being on the run

Speaking of being on the run, one of the only consistent shows of "affection" from Vash is when he grabs your hand and holding it as tight as he can without hurting you while you run from danger

On the rare occasion you and Vash are able to snag a room at an Inn, you find yourself wishing you could stay forever. Vash tends to be more affectionate and doting when he knows you're both safe and don't need to worry about being ready to run at a moment's notice. His go-to displays of affection are usually feeding you and initiating cuddle sessions. Unfortunately, these moments are few and far between

A relationship with Vash is full of contradictions. He loves you, but won't show it, he hides things from you, yet he's an open book, he wants closeness with you, but will never take the first step

He's so full of love and unsure of how to act on it. He's so afraid of being selfish that he'll deny himself his basic wants and needs. You're there to remind him that a little self indulgence never hurt anyone, and that love, as scary as it can be, is worth sticking around for

Oh it was very bad to show Reader has magic. Bc what if she goes after Nai now? What if she’s plotting to send an army with that little trick? What if (and how heretical to even think) she and Vash have a powerful child that can take out Nai’s legacy?

He’ll just have to do something about it before that happens.
