PANCAKE LOVE <3
Elmer’s Restaurant- Beaverton, OR. Delicious pancakes that come with eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage! I must say these are the best pancakes I have tried in the Beaverton area.
Memo’s- Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. I will never look at pancakes the same! After trying Memo’s pancakes, WOW, I felt like I had entered into heaven. The batter is homemade, the pancakes came out fluffy and topped with Cojeta- a Mexican caramel sauce. These pancakes are out of this world, and Memo’s is a restaurant you must stop at when visiting Puerto Vallarta.

Posted: March 30, 2015
Breaking News: This family-owned restaurant located in Beaverton, Oregon permanently closed their doors on March 29, 2015. This was a sad day for locals who enjoyed dining at La Fogata, many who were regulars. La Fogata, owned by Rafael and Annie, has been in business for almost two decades.
La Fogata offered an authentic Mexican cuisine with a diverse menu, including distinct items found in their Chef’s Specials. Many customers raved about the La Fogata nachos, Maya steak, build-your-own-burrito, Enchiladas Oaxaca, Tequila Tastings, and their incredible 6-foot long burrito! La Fogata brought something new to the table and it is unfortunate to see them go. La Fogata will be greatly missed!

Narratives
Imagine living in a world where there are no animals.
Looks terrifying, doesn’t it?
Or how about Earth without nature?
If we continue to destroy our planet little by little, we will regret it in the future.
According to Deighton, Romer, and McQueen (1989), “[S]torylines are widely used in advertising” (as cited in Green & Brock, 2005). The WWF does a great job of using a narrative in their commercial to educate the audience on how we are all connected. What WWF means by “we” is that we humans, animals, plants, air, water, and everything else that makes Earth survive, are all connected.
WWF used animations to tell the story of how everything on Earth is connected and how the actions of humans affect the quality of life of everything on Earth. We all live on this planet together. If humans continue to not have a part in helping preserve and protect our environment, then it will cause devastating results. Moreover, WWF stated in the commercial about how they work with other organizations to help the environment. The commercial by the WWF is an example of a public narrative.
Green and Brock (2005) defined public narratives as, “stories that may be shared with multiple recipients-usually raise questions, report conflicts, or describe activity. They have a storyline- with a beginning, a middle, and an end-during which characters may encounter and then resolve a crisis or crises” (p. 117).
This commercial begins the story with the panda (WWF International, 2009). In order for the panda to be happy, the tree needs to be happy (WWF International, 2009). In order for the tree to be happy, the air it breathes has to be happy (WWF International, 2009). If the air is happy, the climate is happy (WWF International, 2009). If nature is happy, then people and the way they live and work, and the panda, are all happy (WWF International, 2009).
Therefore, the story begins with the panda and the middle of the story talks about the tree, climate, and nature. Then, it ends with how we will all be happy if we make changes and how WWF is partnered with other organizations to make this happen, and how we need to be a part of this change.
Moreover, the commercial reports the conflict (environmental issues), and raises questions by making people think twice about their actions, and what we need to do to fix it. Furthermore, the commercial presents the resolution at the end of the advertisement.
Overall, the commercial transports the audience by imagery and feelings. The WWF does a great job of presenting images and applying ethos (Green & Brock, 2000 as cited in Mastarone lecture). The main point of the WWF commercial is to get the audience members to change their attitudes and help be a part of this social change.
The narrative is important to me because I believe in having a planet that we take care of and a planet that we all appreciate. Making little changes, like not buying real Christmas trees to recycling and so on, helps the environment.
This narrative is meaningful to society at large because we all live on this planet and it is important that we all take part in taking care of it. Doing little things to change how we live can make a bigger impact on helping save the environment.

Sensation-Seeking
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 35.1% of adults age 20 years and older were found to be obese in 2011-2012. Sixty-nine percent of adults 20 years and over are overweight, including obesity (CDC, 2012). The CDC also reported, “29.1 million people or 9.3% of the population have diabetes” (CDC, 2014).
This is a big issue happening in America today. I have family members who are struggling with diabetes and I know others who struggle with health issues because they do not know how to live a healthier lifestyle or at least make better food choices, have the money to afford healthier options or do not have information about health.
It is meaningful for society at large because it is a societal issue that affects many. Many Americans do not have knowledge on nutrition or are limited to healthy food choices.
I think that it is very important that everyone, no matter what social class, should be able to have access to healthy food. Also, everyone should be allowed to have access to the same information on how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Both the image and the GIF are tailored to reach high sensation-seekers because it contains visual effects. Sensation seeking is defined as, “a personality trait believed to have biological basis that expresses a need for physiological arousal, novel experience, and a willingness to take social, physical, and financial risks to obtain such arousal. From a mass media perspective, sensation seekers’ thirst for novelty and stimulation is also reflected in very distinct media preferences” (Stephenson, 2003, p. S233).
For example, high sensation-seekers prefer ads that are dramatic, fast, exciting, suspenseful or intense, whereas low sensation seekers prefer ads that are less stimulating (Stephenson, 2003). Both the GIF and the image appeal to high sensation-seekers because it is dramatic and fast.
Moreover, it shows a consequence because the images clearly show that when you overly consume fast food and/or sugar, it will cause negative effects. The GIF is stimulating because it has moving pictures that are fast and have catchy phrases such as, “tasty”, “obesity”, “diabetes”, and “addictive.” Additionally, there is a variety of colors rather than a limited palate.
The GIF starts with a positive image of sugar looking “sexy” and glamourous. Then, the GIF ends with a negative image of a male with rotten teeth, which is one of the many effects that sugar causes. On the other hand, the image of the overweight male is stimulating because it is not an image full of facts, statistics, boring colors, and so forth. But, it is an image that is full of color which is the recipe to catch high sensation-seekers’ attention.
In addition, the photo has a message that is clear and intense. Both images are targeted to make society think about the health issues present in the United States today.

Modern Family: Gloria Prichett, Framing & Stereotyping
Modern Family is a TV-series that aired on ABC in 2009. Jay Pritchett is an American man who is the head of the large family, and remarried for the second time. Gloria, Jay’s new wife, is from Colombia and has a son named Manny from a previous marriage. Both Jay and Gloria have a son together who appears in later episodes.
Mitch and Claire are Jay's biological children. Mitch is married to Cam who both have an Asian daughter named Lilly, and Claire is married to Phil. Both Claire and Phil have three children named, Haley, Alex and Luke. The television series depicts the daily lives of this modern-day family.
1. The reason why I chose this media is because it is important to see that the show has done a great job on showing blended families, which is becoming more common in the U.S., on television. However, portraying this blended family may have potential negative effects to our culture and society. Additionally, I chose this particular media because it demonstrates both positive and negative stereotypes.
2.a. The show can be framed in multiple ways. Framing is defined as, “basic cognitive structures which guide the perception and representation of reality” (Goffman, 1974 as cited in Mastarone lecture). The four functions of frames are: Define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, suggest remedies.
Define problems means to “determine what a causal agent is doing with costs and benefits” (Mastarone lecture, 2015). Secondly, diagnose causes means to “identify what is creating the problem” (Mastarone lecture, 2015). Thirdly, make moral judgments means to “evaluate the agents and their effects” (Mastarone lecture, 2015). Last of all, suggest remedies means to “offer and justify treatments for the problems and predict effects” (Mastarone lecture, 2015).
For instance, it could be framed as a show that is great for television viewers to see how blended families are more common in the modern world. Also, it can be framed as we recognize that these stereotypes are bad, however it is a comedy so people should not make a big deal about it, and just have a laugh.
In contrast, it can be framed as this awful show that is not any good because it is filled with stereotypes, and it causes negative impact on our society. Some aspects of the show is the reason which have created problems. The type of media frame that was used for the show was human interest because audiences are interested in learning about other people. In the case of this show, the audience are interested in learning about other people within blended families.
The stereotypes that are seen in the show are Mitch and Cam, a gay couple who adopted an Asian baby. There are many stereotypes that are featured in the show associated with gay men, adopting international children, plus Asian people in general.
Moreover, there are stereotypes associated with the women of the show because both Claire and Gloria are housewives, and are there to fix emotional problems. The men are seen as hard-working breadwinners, and Phil is portrayed as the “Dumb Dad.” He is seen as being a clueless guy; but at the same time he is seen as a successful and skilled real estate agent.
Moreover, there are the stereotypes seen with Jay and Gloria. Jay is portrayed as this old, rich guy who was lucky to land himself a young, Hispanic wife. I’m sure there are many more stereotypes that can be found in the show, but the main focus on this blog will be on stereotypes associated with Hispanic women.
There are many negative stereotypes seen against Gloria. For one, Gloria is married to an older, rich American man, which assumes that she married him for the wrong reasons since she is a younger woman from another country. One of the common stereotypes associated with Hispanics is, when a Hispanic is with an American, it is solely because they want help obtaining citizenship or for their money. Another stereotype seen on the show is that Gloria is Hispanic so that means she must have an accent, she must barely speak English, and have dark features.
In addition, another common stereotype found on the show is that since Gloria is a Hispanic, she is quick to anger and extremely loud.
However, there are also positive stereotypes seen with this character. For one, she is portrayed as a strong woman who was able to raise her son Manny on her own before she even met Jay. Secondly, she is seen as a compassionate, loving, assertive, humble, and smart woman.
2.b. Furthermore, a possible positive outcome of using this frame can be that it can educate viewers of how modern families look like today and how blended families are increasing in today’s society. The positive outcome of viewing positive Hispanic stereotypes is for viewers to understand the culture and for more Hispanics to be seen as a part of our society as well, instead of seeing them as only ‘minorities’.
However, the negative outcome of using this frame for the show and the negative stereotypes for Hispanics is it can cause implications on our culture and society because it can misinform viewers about blended families and make people see blended families in a negative way. Also, it is hard to recognize stereotypes when the show can be framed as humor that is innocent and does not intend to harm anyone.
On the other hand, a negative outcome is that it can create more stereotypes, which can cause viewers to believe these stereotypes to be true. Moreover, it can cause viewers to not be able to know that in reality these stereotypes can still be damaging to people, whether or not it comes from a humorous context. It can confuse people into thinking that stereotypes are becoming more accepted and it is okay to sweep this under the rug and not make stereotyping a big deal anymore.
It can cause viewers to believe that these stereotypes associated with Hispanics are true for everyone or true at all. For instance, Gloria is seen as a strong woman who is quick to get angry. Does that mean she can only express anger because she is a strong woman and strong women do not cry? Meaning, it is a negative outcome because it can put standards for Hispanic women. Overall, positive or negative stereotypes can have consequences in representation of certain groups.
3. One media literacy skill a person should have to consume this media is, Social Responsibility. Social responsibility “is characterized by people having critical appreciation of all kinds of media messages, but instead of having primarily internal perspective (as with the previous stage), the perspective here is external.
The person at this stage not only asks, “What is best from my point of view and why?” but also, “What types of messages are best for others and for society? (Potter, 2014, p. 28). It relates to the media because the show tried to incorporate positive messages for others and society by showing blended families on television.
