Japanese

Something I’ve been noticing a lot recently: being Japanese subjects me to scrutiny by my peers almost solely by my heritage. Not all my peers, of course, but most people that I’m only acquainted with will try to find common ground with me through Japanese culture--be it history, food, anime etc. And I’ve also noticed this primarily only happens to me--a Japanese-American--whereas my Chinese/Korean/Filipino/Vietnamese friends rarely receive the same treatment for their heritage. It’s not like I hear people talking to my friends about a bomb-ass Chinese restaurant that opened, but say if a ramen shop pops up people will come to me asking if I’ve been there. Please, I’m more American than Japanese. I’m 4th generation. And I like burgers.

[PROLOGUE]

I cut ties with one of the most inhuman-human beings I’ve met in my life. He was a pretentious, superficial person that cared more about broadcasting his life to others than to make meaningful connections with the people he shared it with. It upsets me that I let someone like him come so close into my life and affect me the way he has. Nonetheless, I was weak to allow such a situation to unfold. I let him in because I craved attention. I got hurt because I blindly fell into my own hole filled with delusions of grandeur. And I’ve learned some valuable lessons:

You can’t always be what everyone wants, and molding yourself to do so will result in a lack of self-identity, existential crises and a lot of weekday drinking. Shitty people exist. Incompatible people exist. Deal with it.

Don’t let yourself be too embracing of everyone. Sure you’re lonely, but if you let in people that are more detrimental than supportive you’re gonna have a bad time. 

Being vulnerable is the best time to build yourself up--don’t seek others to put the pieces together for you.

It’s ok to not be perfect. It’s ok to have faults. It’s ok that not everyone accepts you. That’s what makes you human.

Summer is here in Cali. The perfect time to start a new chapter in my life. And in the great words of the almighty Drake:
