How to Fill Screw Holes in Wood Before You Paint - Easy Steps

If you're like me, you've seen the old trick of filling a screw hole in wood with a penny. That's great if your hole is small and the screw was a number one or two sized Phillips head. But sometimes the hole is too big, it's a number six size, or the screw was driven in with a power drill. And holes that have been drilled out really need something more.

What is the need for filling holes?

Scratch the surface of the wood with a blade to create an even layer. This will help sanding dust adhere to the wood more easily. Apply a generous amount of glue to the area around the hole, but not so much that it will drip out from anywhere else.

Smooth it out and make sure that it is level with the rest of the surface. Small wood holes can be easily filled with wood putty. If the hole is too big, it will require a more complicated process.

The first step is to cut off any protruding edges of the hole so that the filler will adhere to it. Next, plug the hole with a piece of dowel or wooden rod that can be easily removed later. Fill the opening with glue and sand it down to any rough spots. Use a special filler for filling large holes in wood and wait until it cures before sanding and painting.
