Been some time since I’ve posted, been busy with work and life stuff. Stupid work and life stuff getting in the way of my world-building. Have a sketch I did that I haven’t inked yet.

Because you’re in a European-style church, yo. Christian art depeicts Jesus and the other Biblical figures as whatever the race of the artist/region is. Don’t believe me?
Here’s a Chinese painting of the Baptism of Christ:
Here is a Native American painting of the Nativity:
Here’s a painting of Jesus giving a sermon by a Kenyan artist:
And, lastly, here’s a European painting of Jesus healing the blind:
If you live in a country or region where the culture is primarily European, expect to have that reflected in the art you see.
I love this post.
Can confirm. Here in Japan, churches are full of Asian Jesus’.
See also, historical figures or events being depicted in a contemporary fashion.
For example, Saint Maurice:
Not a particularly unusual depiction. If you go looking, even the ones in which he is European (usually the earlier examples) have him in contemporary mediaeval armour.
The problem is that he was executed by the Romans in 286CE.
No one knows what he would have looked like.
He’s also often depicted as sub-Saharan African, despite being from Egypt. Although he was from a region associated with Nubians, he’d still be from the wrong side of the continent. They were trying though.
Fuckwits, like that one that specialises in “mediaeval people of colour”, will try and use renaissance depictions to claim things about someone’s actual appearance. And other fuckwits will believe them. Another breed of fuckwit will see depictions of St Maurice in mediaeval armour with the crest of the Holy Roman Empire, of which he was the patron saint, and claim that people are lying and it’s actually a depiction of an African knight….
“ ….churches are full of Asian Jesus’. “
Well technically Israel is in Asia…..
Hush now, I want to hear Diana Ross and The Supremes’ passive-aggressive explanation of biblical hermeneutics.
Hi, I totally forgot to post about this here! The People’s Print Shop produced a really nice limited-edition print of ‘Darker Rooms’, all signed and numbered by my own right hand, and there’s maybe 7 or 8 of them still left—if you’re interested in snagging one before they’re gone, they can be found right here!
ok thank you, love you, new painting coming soooon for real
